That part on the old shock is a vibration damper. They are fitted on shock to potentially reduce vibrations from road wheels etc. With the new one it may need a calibration or coding etc. or as you stated could be a fault with the replacement part

A lot of the time the abs sensor is the issue, to why the terrain response system fails. Maybe be worth looking into as it’s a relatively easy and cheap job to do bud.

Are them shocks different lengths buddy? Hate doing shocks. Why manufactures slot shocks into hubs is beyond me. Nothing wrong with bolting them on the hub instead.
