Changing Brake Discs & Pads on a 15' Audi A3!

On this episode, we end up chaning some rotors and brake pads. The reason being was because the car had some bad steering wheel vibrations. I believe the car came with that, but with time it just became worse. Sit back and enjoy this little trip to mechanic land!

I’m very surprised your ECU did not cry about parking brake recalibration and the new brake pads. I have a 2015 S3 and the brakes will need to be changed soon. It looks cake but they said you need to do recalibration after with a VAGCOM reader which is stopping me from doing it myself.

Why not just do it, and take it somewhere to get it recalibrated? Heck, it may be just like this one, and not send you a code. Either way, good luck!

Another good way to get that caliper Bracket bolt out use a 21mm 1/2” socket and use a 1/2” breaker bar and it will come loose

I have a 2016 Audi A3 8V Quattro and I can’t find rear brake kits for my car. Any help suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried calling the dealership? Maybe they can give you a part number that you can outsource.

Also is there only one sensor on one brake pad only for the front brakes

Its Eco I don’t remember, but I believe so. Only for the inboard pad.

Yep. that's the same on all VWAG cars if they have one. Inboard pad because that is the first pad that comes in contact with the rotor being pushed by the piston, so it will always wear slightly more than the outboard pad.

After all of the mechanical work is done, I know there is some things u must do for the computer?

Ali Yildirim I did not have to mess with anything electrical. The brake caliper piston was compressed. But the computer doesn’t need to know that.

When you change the pads, does the brake warning (brake sensor) stay on? If so, what is done to solve that? I want to change the brake pads front and back

Harry Perez I’m not really sure to be honest. The sensor never came on. I changes the disk brakes because they were warped, and ended up changing the pads since I was already there. You could possibly look on the settings the same way you reset the tire air pressure, or you could take it in to a dealer to reset it for you. I don’t image it being difficult though. It will go off when you replace it. The "sensor" is just a loop of thin wire baked into the pad at a specific depth. When the pad wears down and breaks that wire, the ECU sees an open circuit and trips the light. Correct the problem and the light will turn off.

Awesome video man! Was hard to find one for this specific year/model. I have a 2015 A3 8v 2.0t Quattro. I paid to have the rear pads/rotors replaced as I didn't have or want to deal with getting the vagcom system for the electronic parking brake. I want to do the fronts myself. Anyways, could you list out the tool sizes you used? From what I could see, you used a 13m socket for the pads(with an 11/16 wrench to hold the nut down), a T30 hex for the rotor, and a 21m for the 2 big bolts on the caliper? Am I missing anything? Appreciate the tutorial!

Joshua Perkins Maybe an pneumatic impact if you have it. The bolts holding the caliper bracket to the hub assembly were pretty tight. If you can’t do that, use a wrench, and a heavy mallet to break it loose. Good luck, amigo. Glad the video helps. 😄👍

@@TheAutomotiveKid Thanks man. I have an electric impact wrench, no pneumatics, and I dont want to snap a pin. Worst case I have a wrench and a 20lb hammer. I'll let you know, should be able to get it done this week!

All went well! Had some trouble getting the last 21mm bolt off, had to use a breaker bar and some PB Blaster. Other than that everything was pretty straight forward. Thanks for the video, came in very handy!

Its Eco No. just open the reservoir cap when you compress the caliper piston. As long as you don’t open any lines, you don’t have to bleed.

The Automotive Kid so when u take the pads out before u take the caliper off, you take the cap off the reservoir and then take the caliper off?

Its Eco No. Whenever you go to compress the brake caliper pad piston, you want to remove the reservoir cap so that it doesn’t build pressure. Once you compress the piston, you can place the cap back on.

Just to clarify for TAK. It's a 13mm caliper bolt, 17mm for the counter hold nut (which is actually the hollow caliper slide pin) and a 21mm caliper carrier (bracket) bolt. ALL Euro cars of the last 20 years or so are metric.

You Wish yes. Triple square meaning 12pt internal bolt. 14mm triple square for the rear caliper bracket bolts

I honestly couldn’t tell you. I just used the good-and-tight method. You could purchase an Audi A3 maintenance manual, or use a bolt torque configuration chart. You just have to find the pitch thread and all that jazz.
