Changing Kashgar - China

Kashgar is located in Western China, and has been at a crossroad of civilizations for centuries. Once a thriving town along the Silk Road, it is changing quickly today, now that the Chinese government has initiated several plans to incorporate the area into the so called 'develop the West' program. The original population of Xinjiang, the Uyghur people, are under continuous pressure from growing Chinese influence, and see their traditional Muslim society being eroded rapidly.
Old quarters are being destroyed, and make way for new, but hastily built apartment blocks. Uyghurs are under increasing scrutiny by the local and central government, and also face unfair competition on the job market from the many Han Chinese that now live in cities like Kashgar.
At the same time, many Uyghurs manage to hold on to their traditional lifestyles, and some parts of town look the same as they did 100 years ago.
I traveled to Kashgar in 2005, and got the chance to visit the town again in 2010, this time bringing a video camera. This clip gives an insight of the structural visible changes that are happening to the city, but it also shows what daily life in Kashgar is like today.
This video contains only a part of the entire story, and I encourage you to read up on Kashgar's history and current situation.
For this video I used traditional Uyghur music and stock free audio to support the images.

Thank you for the video. This video made me cry.. I went to Kashgar in 2011, 2016, and 2017. Such a beautiful place. But now, Kashar has been changed so much leaving almost none shown in this video.

I was in Kashgar un 2009, it was really sad to se how the traditional environment had been destroyed. I think it is necessary to consult people before changing the urban structure, mainly in so highly historical sites like this!

How you know the government didn't consult the owners? Do you speak Uyghur or Chinese? The government has spent millions to build the new modern housing for them. My friends live in there. Are you blind to see all these government-built new high rising apartment in Kashgar? Have you ever been in the slum areas in Amsterdam?! @@anneeq008 this is controversial. They want to be autonomus but still interact with the rest of china. They also benefit from Han tourists, so it's only reasonable they learn the common language. That isn't to say that the uighur language disappears. To an uighur, Mandarin and written Chinese are the secondary language.

Sure they needed the CCP to safe them. Great to be re-educated and get an opportunity to work 12 hour shifts in some factory 100s of kms away and come home to your dormitory at night. How come this woman Lishi or what ever her name is, is so popular online for showing her pretty videos of farm life? Looks so desirable now, doesn't it. Uighur culture is pretty sophisticated, I don't think you want to see its value, because Chinese culture was destroyed during the cultural revolution and don't know what it means to have an authentic culture.

A typical biased commentary from a Westerner (in this case, a Dutch) who knows nothing about Central Asia. I did visit Amsterdam, met and talked to the drug addicts from single-parent family. Do I got the conclusion that Netherland is the worst place on earth?! Yes, You Bet !!! As a matter of fact, Netherland has much more drug addicts and single-families than any country in Central Asia. @@missyxixi It's true though. Check out FW's videos. People didn't want to leave their old dwellings. Have you ever lived in a communist built apartment block? They are usually very sad. Most 3 to 5 tier cities don't look like Shanghai. Every thing is square and there are huge concrete plazas and huge empty street. They all look the same. The Chinese only rebuilt the Old City in Kashgar and market for there own amusement, throw in a few Uighurs in costumes, like an open air museum. How amusing.

Dec2022 im watching videos of kashgar during covid, the men still wear headcovers but women dont wear hijabs.. the police will tell them to take them off, but arabic letters are on taxis and train stations and airplanes.. i understand why they would help build the infrastructure its good.. they are prob good citizens cooperating like what islam teaches.. the women wear long dresses looks like in 2023 videos wallahualam..

Unesco heritage center had sent their agents to concern/investigate the reconstruction project. The old kashgar is going to be a famous tourist site after the rebuild is completed. Xingiang is a Chinese province . Every resident there is a Chinese citizen. There are more than Uhgur minority living there. There is no other country outside of China who gives better care and grants more privileges to the minority groups. Even the smallest groups are not ignored. They build infrastructure and road to turn there ancestral land into tourist destinations. The West likes to keep the original delepidated crumbling historical buildings as living museum for the Europeans to visit and feel superior. China wants the rising tide to lift up all its citizens. If the West don’t like it. Too bad. I am constantly amazed that the Europeans with recent several hundred years of success feel entitled to lecture a country with thousand of years of unsurpassed success and wealth.

Modernization in Uyghur style and keeping history as it has ever been is a positive move. Unfortunately, the current move seems like trying to transfer an ancient Uyghur city into a Han Chinese one forcing natives out of their courtyard house to fake plastic high-rise flat. All decisions have been made by arrogant ex-army officials who have little respect on native environment and culture. E,g,the government have removed most of the native plants in the city, destroyed the flora of Tumen River bed, eliminated most of the historical buildings...Aim of the government is to make the immigrant Han people as comfortable as possible.

But it's no longer what it used to be, the cultural center of Muslim culture in Central Asia. Uighur culture has been forced to detach from it's religious core. The beautiful, sophisticated and cultured society, has been branded as backwards, unemployed and criminal, in need of re-education. Music, dance, food, ritual have been repacked for tourism. Oh, yes. China appreciates it's minorities, but the Uighurs didn't used to be a minority in Xinjiang. And whatever expression of Uighur culture is still allowed to exist, has been diluted.
