Love the pre-blown fuses! When I was an apprentice (electronic engineer, working in a broadcast transmitter design lab) we had a big die-cast aluminium box covered with all different size/shape fuseholders. Also a big red button and two lamps, one red, one green. Inside was a dc power supply, a stonking great capacitor, and a latching relay. You put in the fuse to be tested and pressed the button and one of the lights would come on. If the fuse was dead, the red lamp came on "Fuse was blown". If the fuse was ok, the relay latched, the capacitor discharged across the fuse, and the green light came on "Fuse was good".

6:20 Except Dubai lamps. Specifically designed to run at about 1/4 the rated current per LED, so last indefinitely for marginally more cost. Only available in Dubai because the government mandated it, otherwise lamp manufacturers prefer to have the repeat trade.

The issue with most LEDs dying is that they get run with too much power going through them and heat kills them. If they were run at a lower power and temperature, they'd last ten times as long but then the manufacturers would make less money so....
@acelectricalsecurity3 жыл бұрын
Apparently not just the heat, the NIC guy told me they are rated for 230v and we are supplying them with 240v or more hence their life is shortened
@Russwig3 жыл бұрын
And often it is the power supply (AC to DC) that fails, not the actual LED chips.
@SwordQuake23 жыл бұрын
That's why Dubai lights were created but they aren't sold anywhere else...
@farmersteve1293 жыл бұрын
Not entirely accurate.... equipment supplied for domestic use in the UK is required to operate correctly on 230V +10%/-6% giving a range of 216 - 253V & any marketing specifications are supposed to be based on that. There are three key reasons (all related to cost) why the LEDs fail, firstly the LEDs themselves are driven to their limit to get the maximum lumens from the least amount of LEDs - this invariably leads to early life failure. The second part is that a lot of units do not have constant current drivers, rather they rely on crude techniques - often just a capacitive dropper, which do not regulate the current at all, which means that excess current will flow. The third reason is that every possible corner is cut in the manufacturing process, so for example the absolute minimum solder is used & low quality components - often counterfeit or copy parts. Saving a couple of pence per unit might not sound much, but if a factory is pumping out millions of units per year....
@Thats_Mr_Random_Person_to_you3 жыл бұрын
@@Russwig yh, the actual LED can easily last the quoted 50,000hrs.... but the cheap, under-rated, densely packaged electrolytic output filter capacitor... not so much!!! Don't want to sound all tin hat conspiracy theory... but companies don't make any money for products that last years and years....... so there is little desire to do things properly.

Tom , you can order your missing parts from your wholesaler , order a pickup from a traditional courier same day delivery company a give them the order number . They dispatch a motorbike or cycle courier to pick it up for you and deliver to your job site . Most even have a premium delivery within the hour or even half an hour depending on the distance from the wholesaler . When you factor in the time it takes you to leave the job site , lose your parking spot , sit in traffic, pick-up your parts and come back , look for another parking spot etc , it's well worth the money to pay for a courier . Especially knowing that while you're waiting for your delivery, you can keep working and avoid disrupting your work .
