Changing marine engine mounts

This video is about how I changed the diesel engine mounts on my sailboat but can apply to any inboard with propeller shaft. My engine is a Perkins and I get many of my parts and technical information from at www.part4engines.com.

I'm in the middle of replacing my mounts on my Pearson 35 and this was the best video I've found to help me out. The sad thing was that my rear mounts were so bad that the bolts came out with the engine (transmission replacement). I didn't even think about using a flange gauge to ensure the engine is even with the shaft. Super helpful.

Thank's for the help. Excellent info on these mounts.. Recognize the Parts4engines mounts. Only place to buy older perkins diesel parts or in my case a Perkins 4-154-200/Mazda xa/Westerbeke 58..

My engine was installed 2018 (volvo penta) I've watched this video and ordered some engine mounts (aftermarket as the vp ones were £1000 for 4!!!) The engine vibrates a lot on start up so I'm going to replace them myself. I wish I had as much access as you have on your boat but it doesn't look impossible so fingers crossed! Annoyed they have appeared to have failed (I think) so quickly Thanks for this video!

Carriage bolts. Thanks for a great video. I have the same type of engine on my narrowboat in Ireland (perkins 100 parama 103-15) and found the engine mounts are all at the wrong g heights.

I have a Catalina 320 with a similar Perkins engine . Currently the engine shakes violently at low rpm when in fwd and reverse . But fine once I increase to 5-10 % think this could be engine mounts ?

It could be the mounts or a prop shaft misalignment. Look at your mounts and see if there is any dark rubber dust, indicating the mount are warn. It can also be the fuel injectors as well. A few years ago, my engine was doing the same thing. When I removed the injectors, one was completely finished. I had all three rebuilt and the shaking went away.

@@aquaholic3 hmmm good to know. So far I have 3 things to check 1. making sure the idle is set high enough . I believe its 1000 on the perkins m30 (catalina 320), 2. alignment and motor mounts 3 fuel injectors. Sound right?

@@hudsonromain that’s sounds right, although I would not « fix » the problem by increasing the idle speed. Keep it on manufacture’s spec and check it once you’ve exhausted the other possible causes. A fowled or worn injector can also cause the idle to seem low. But in fact, if a worn injector, at low idle or speed it, could cause some vibration and goes away as you increase throttle. If you’ve never changed or rebuilt your injectors, it might be a good time to do so.

Sorry to hear that. Especially after a day’s work. Did you have the right mounts? Did you measure the original mount / screw settings? If you did, the height should be good.

@Aquaholic 3 unfortunately the original mount are vetus and are no longer made. I've built shims and have had to drill new mounting holes to fit the new mounts. I've also had to flip the engine beackets to get more clearance, hence the new shims. It's a real frankenstein setup. I'm hoping to get this finished the week. The The engine mounts i purchased are the Perkins 4.236 marine mounts

@@joshuabduck4986 the joys of boating and the DIY Captain… if the mounts are solid, once you’re done, make sure sure to align the prop shaft and transmission flange. Take your time with that. Start with centering the engine first. Then, adjust the front and back, up or down, as required.

@Aquaholic 3 i plan to let the engine settle for 24 hours before i reconnect the shaft flange. Then adjust accordingly. Of course im nervous but hopefully it will work out.

@@joshuabduck4986 make sure you have a good feeler gauge and take your time. Rotate the prop shaft many time making sure it is cantered in it’s tunnel. It is not that hard and more forgiving than you may think.
