Top tip from me. If you don’t have a locking tool on a twin cam, like the T series. I’ve found you can cable tie the pulley’s together through the spokes. With a combination of various well placed plastic cable ties you can lock things up enough to stop it moving. Once complete, just cut them off. They also work to hold the belt on the pulleys sometimes when you need 3 hands.

Sykes-Pickavant do a fine Camshaft Pulley Locking Tool for the Rover T-Series. Bought soon after getting the first of many Rover 620ti about twenty years ago. After doing the first of several T-Series Timing Belt renewals, managed to do rather more without the locking tool. That having self taught the "how to". How very annoying and time consuming for you me and many others working on used cars. Here I have in mind those various 10mm Bolts Securing the Timing Belt Covers showing clear evidence of being over tightened by whoever worked on this engine last. All to frequent over tightening fasteners even in well run pro-workshops strips threads or rounds nuts and bolt head flats or in the case of those T-Series Plastic Covers, strip out the threaded female captive fastener within the inner Timing Belt Covers. Lost count of the times I encountered that problem. Adding much time to a few minutes job, Power tool over use often guilty here or give it and extra turn for luck!. I was expecting you to have difficulty with that 19mm CRANKshaft Pully Bolt. They are often overtightened due to heavy handed power tool use. Two very important pointers to stress. Not just for the T-Series but most maybe all engines. NEVER forget to remove that rod locking the flywheel before attempting to start the engine after job done. Prior to this, ideally with Spark Plugs removed, rotate the engine manually using that 19mm CRANKshaft Pully Bolt at least two complete four stroke cycles checking and listening for any metal-to-metal contact noises. Then check the IN and EX indexes on the CAMshaft Pullys are still aligned. I use a trusty Steel Ruler;'s dtraight edge to do this. Amazing the number of times having done all this you are "one tooth out". To avoid or reduce the chances of "one tooth out", always ensure the longest straight run of the Belt, that from the Exhaust Camshaft Pully to the one on the Crankshaft is taught. That also will help fitting the belt around the rest of its run. Only then think about reconnecting battery and staring the engine. Great engines the T-Series in all its forms. My son's Rover 620ti with its T-Series Turbocharged now showing 240,000 miles last time I drove. He has had for closing on twenty years. Was his daily driver work transport as he travels much for his job. Been all over the EU mainland in it. Snowboarding in Norway, touring the alps and even done a lap of the Nürburgring in it loaded with holiday clobber and three mates as passengers.

Nice job Matt! Lot's of good tips from viewers for the next time you change a timingbelt. Can be a pain sometimes, remember certain cars I serviced as a mechanic was a day of work to change the belt.
@Zeem4 Жыл бұрын
Reminds me of the one and only time I changed a timing belt, on my Renault Grand Scénic. There were two nerve-wracking moments - the first was removing the old belt, which is the point of no return. Up to that point, if I'd bottled it I could have just put it back together and got someone else to do it, but after that I'd got no choice but to proceed. The second, of course, is starting the engine back up and hoping it's not accompanied by the sound of pistons hitting valves. I did the job ultra-carefully in stages over the course of three days to make sure I didn't make a mistake. I even bought a mini torque wrench for installing the new water pump exactly as the book said. A mechanic friend took the piss out of that because he said he'd just do it by feel, but the water pump is the first thing to go back on, buried underneath everything else, and I absolutely did not want it to leak meaning I'd have to take it all apart again.
@eclectarama Жыл бұрын
I also replaced a belt for a Grand Scenic. The feeling of trepidation I felt was not helped by the fact that the last person in there had refitted the exhaust cam sprocket 180 degrees out, meaning that the markings were incorrect. Much head-scratching and mild swearing later, all was well...
@Zeem4 Жыл бұрын
@@eclectarama Haha! Mine's a K4M engine which has no timing marks - only, I had the problem where the cam locking tool wouldn't fit because the inlet cam was one tooth out, so I had to deviate from the procedure in the book which terrified me. I had images in my head of it exploding with a twang, like taking a watch apart without winding the mainspring down first. I was also a bit worried by the idler pulley bolt on which a previous person had chewed up the head by using the wrong Torx bit. Oddly enough, I have the correct T-50 bit which I'd bought 20 years previously to remove the seatbelts from an Austin Maestro, and never used again until that moment, and I've never used it since.

Changed the belt on my car earlier in the year - a diesel. I hadn't noticed the crank pulley had moved one tooth, as the "locking pin" (a locating pin really) is a rubbish design and was tricky to fully seat in the flywheel... The other pins in cam and injector pump pulleys were all good, and went back where they came from after a few rotations. Started the engine and it rattled like it was coming apart and the exhaust flooded the drive with a cloud of white smoke. Oh was my face red! Happily when re-timed it ran fine. Easy mistake, which on some engines would be a costly one I imagine.
