While changing the shocks and overhauling the brakes I seem to have misplaced the locking wheelnut key which has caused no end of problems.

The reason for the brake pipe being tight on full lock is because you have it jacked up on stands and the front suspension is at full travel, once weight is back on the vehicle the pipe with have plenty of slack. Nice job tho, make a change to see people torque things to spec.
