Changing the LEGO City Modular Building Layout

In this LEGO city update, I move all the modular buildings around to try and finalize a layout. The changes include Central Park, Pop Culture Street, a canal, a train station, and much more. I think this design works well and I'm ready to start working on some of the details!

have the canal just end into the opening hole for now and re appear on the other side of the access hole so you don't have to mess with central park because its a perfect spot and you can finalize the roads

Leave space for new buildings by constructing building sites. Include road works on the roads with temporary traffic lights. How about creating separate dioramas for Harry Potter, Ninjago, medieval and marvel? That way your city will feel more authentic. Try not to listen to all the negative comments as we like your mountains too. Keep up the great work 👍

The university, which is a historic style of building, would look nice across from the park. I like the idea of pretending the canal continues across the manhole. Would free up the space where the strip of blue baseplates are next to the park. And you could put the Venetian buildings in front of the manhole so it looks like the canal goes under the bridge and pops up somewhere else. Consider placing some of the restaurant and cafe type buildings next to the canal so you can have some outdoor patio dining overlooking the water. Like some of the streets in Amsterdam.

Why pretend? The manholes should have drop-down sections that can be raised back into place when not needed.. THAT'S what would free up space, and make for a truly mega lego city.

Where to put thing s. I would of just. Stuck with. The. Same lay out. He. Had. Then add to it an chandge. Some of the old lay out. Now it's going to take him. Way longer. To sort out a hole new lay out.

Look at pictures from Amsterdam, it will give you lots of ideas on how to build the stream that flows in the city! And I would suggest you build a one-way road on both sides of the park, because it looks too empty

I think you need to keep the grid for downtown core, and save the angled roads for the countryside/residential areas

You obviously have the opertunity now to create something amazing, I hope you can change your thinking away from your old lego city.. You have the chance to play with elevations, even in the downtown and residential areas A table up front to make some kind of island with connecting road and rail bridge would be epic.. especially if you created a show stopping bridge (golden gate style) Maybe draw some ideas up online, add some elevation changes along roads and houses.. a lovely sweeping river with green banks etc etc.. I think making everything flat apart from the mountains you've proposed is wasting an opertunity to create something absolutely amazing

No need for curtains. Just painting the legs black will make a huge difference. Just look at the ones that are already dark compared to the lighter ones. I don’t think you would even need to paint them all just the ones around the edge and maybe one row in

Please don't burn yourself out! I've been watching your content since 2019 and I loved every moment of it. I don't often comment, but you have so much passion for the hobby I want you to make it for the long haul! I just purchased my first home (with a new Lego space) and I'm in the middle of the endless "what if" possibilities. I'm sure you know this, but take a moment to remind yourself. Don't miss out on life. Play with the kids, watch the games. The Lego will be there tomorrow and so will we! Also do want you want to do with the city. Having a canal or river through downtown is a great idea because most major cities were built up around water and the ability to trade. Love that addition!

15:12 You can design some elevated promenades, where the road ends and the canal begins. Like in Brooklyn NY. Also not all the roads need to be two way. Incorporate Oneway roads in the city blocks. Thank you 🤗 🏙️

I feel like u don’t gotta snake the canal around the access hole, just run it straight back and have it appear in the other end of the hole. Like if the access hole wasn’t there it would just be straight. You don’t need to “explain” how the canal gets the other side by snaking it around. I personally think it’d look nicer too if it was straight. I love the canal idea though it’s awesome like Venice.

Just discovered your channel as you started the work at the new space,I'm not a lego collector but loving the content. One suggestion for the city would be place a street of the medium hight buildings around the access holes to camouflage them as you look through the city and the canal infront with bridges. Keep up the good work.

I love the placement of the canal! It's cool seeing how modular/corner buildings like the brick bank and museum now face onto the water; it looks like it will add a good pop of colour too.

just an idea... maybe you should use the hole as a lake (the river flows in from the mountains and flows out to the sea).

I think you should do a farmers market/food trucks along the right road of your central park. You could dead end the street and have it be for pedestrian foot traffic only except for the food trucks it would look great there and lego seem to be on a food truck kick lately so I'm sure there are more than enough to fill the street. Where I live we have a farmers market once a month and it's great.

The railroad around the border of the city feels weird to me. Moreover, the first thing we see from the city is the railroad, which is not the prettiest thing in a city.

Hi Bricksie! I love seeing you working on the city again - don’t get me wrong - the renovation stage was great but like yourself, we did miss you developing your city. Now I do have a tiny suggestion just for inspiration purposes ☺️ but I feel like you could really make the Central Park - canal area to one of those pedestrian/family friendly areas in your city where car access is limited. Bike paths, walkways, exercise areas, playgrounds, dog play areas, pop up cafes. Someone above mentioned getting inspiration from Amsterdam, I second to that to with any European high density area where they have tried to open up the prime realestate areas for public.

Hi Bricksie, a suggestion for the road plates by central park that come to an abrupt end at the canal could be to just have a large pedestrian area and no road put in some benches and planters etc, if there are no modulars on that row that have to have vehicular access then it could just be a walk space so you dont have to worry about making a road curve around over the canal.

My suggestions would be take the road and train track away from in front of the water. The train track could run behind the first row of modular buildings. Also agree don’t need roads either side of Central Park, Keep up the great work

Would the canal look better slimmer? Maybe make the water modular, 16 x 32 plates of water with 8 x 16 on each side which could have grass, trees or garden on the sides, maybe paved or even short brick walls all depending on the buildings nearby, I guess this would all be up to the size of the boats that use each part of the water system 🤔 the narrower water could bend and twist, plus the water could be moved more to one side then to the other with smaller plates used to fill around making gentle curves, ahh so many possibilities.

I agree, I don't think it should be a full baseplate wide, it just seems too wide proportion wise. Maybe only 20 studs wide and the remaining 12 studs could be a pedestrian walkway or greenery?

He said he was planning to make it narrower and add sidewalks and bridges etc, it’s just a baseplate to roughly show the layout and flow of the canal in the works. So many ideas and so much space and freedom to create something epic. We all know this will take a long time and he’s just in the beginning stages. But you are right if he makes the canal narrow and winding it will look more natural.

Hi Jordan, when you build the new mountain maybe you could add a ruin of some sort, or a plane wreck, in the residential area you could have rubbish bins and a truck that collects them, or a car accident somewhere, maybe a shark or surfers in the water, you could have all sorts of little scenarios around the new city.

Hi Jordan. The canal would look great if it went through some part of the park. You could extend the park to the access hatch. You could have a bit of fun designing walking bridges over the canal which would add something extra to the park.

Raising part of the city a few inches would be a great way to add some elevation. The canal could then flow at the lower level and then have shops, hotels and restaurants lining with walkway along the river on the lower level. Take a look at the San Antonio river walk for inspiration.

Hey Jordan, I think you should think about the 'pop up access holes' try and put your buildings around it/or have built up areas around them. So you don't see them so much. If you place water around it with current layout out you will see the holes. Better to try and hide them? I know its not great for access if you have larger structure around them. But think you can have better layout hiding them a little.

Deluge of suggestions.. my humble view.. pls try if you can elevate the ocean front.. then have a slow incline as we go back.. this would give a wonderful view to the buildings even at the back.. the canal through the city as it flows down the gradient would be awesome.. at the rear end of the city assuming you would have a decent elevation, maybe we could have cliffs bordering an ocean with old fashioned ships.. you are doing great.. and loved it all along

This city will be something to celebrate for others to enjoy . Follow your instincts , even though alot of cities are based on a grid pattern they are also dotted with angled roads and dead end roads . Take a helicopter ride or view over any city or town and this is what you will see . It creates visual interest and is a departure from the norm from other Lego cities that end up being predictable ..

Hi Jordan I was watching your speed build review on barad dur. In the left back corner where the mountains will end, you could do a volcano and put barad dur on it. Then the eye would be like 2 meters up from the floor

You should do small winches with clear lines down to your access holes. You can lower and raise when you need access and you can finish the topside. Also - think cities, ballparks (arenas), basketball courts, baseball fields, etc…

Jordan, I know you want a boat yard and canal in your city. Most cities with boat yards and Venice are located near a bay or harbor. Perhaps you could have a "bay" situated near the manholes. You could have Ninjago city on an island between the man holes. A central park on one side of the bay, a boat yard on the other, and the Venetian houses on the other side and fill in the city around the bay. Just a thought.

For the river/canel just have it run directly into the hole and then continue it out in any direction. Just got to use imagination alittle bit. Having it loop all the way around the hole makes the hole obvious and draws the eye to it.

I think it could look really good if you was to drop the level of the canal and water front down maybe 6 inches or so by cutting out the sections of board. This would make it easier to insert road bridges and footbridges and would give the city a different dimension. You could have weirs, or even locks in the canal. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be amazing. I look forward to your next video. Keep up the great work 👍

Maybe consider a more european old city center layout approach for a part of the city. No cars, small winding cobble stone roads, pedestrians, old buildings, bars and terraces, trees..

Jordan, I thought that I had that I’d like to share is if maybe the canal, as you mentioned, was to stop at the access hole and then come out the other end but think of the access hole as like a reservoir or a lake or a pond. Just a deep black body of water. Then around your access hole, you can do like what you know some features that would be around a pond or a lake and then the canal would dump into the pond and then it would continue out the other end. The access hole would almost mentally and visually be part of the landscape, even though there’s actually no Lego in it.

The service holes need to have swing boards on them so you can attach baseplates to them with parks so when folded up you have one big layout. Angle roads do work well with lego

In fact, I've been looking for Lego cities for years and have only found four serious cities, Brick World, Bob Brickman and City Building Block, the first two also have an English channel. Hey Jordan, the city is looking great. A couple of ideas. Move the bowling and tune shop closer to the beach Modular’s. Also why don’t allocate more space to diagon alley? Although the current layout is more movie accurate it’s hard to enjoy it as is barely visible. I think you could build a nice block showing these buildings maybe around the river. Cheers

The in front water area could use something below the desks like a shelf for an underwater theme, that is if you have any underwater or the Lego Atlantis sets. The water channel could run into or thru a lake/pond in the center of the desks for another water theme area if you have the space.

Think it would be very nicelooking if you expanded the zoo so it goes from whole to whole, that would look very symetric, and I think it would look very good. IF you decide to make angled roads, you might make some buildings that are angled too so that they are placed along side the road.But I think angled roads woyld take up a lot of space. Looking forward to see how the City progresses as you go along.

Central park looks really cool where it is. Maybe it's an idea to tweak it a little and have the canal connect to it? Just a suggestion, is it an idea to place the rebrickable university that you made from Hogwarts next to Diagon Alley? All the Potter stuff next to each other, seems right to me. The layout is coming along nicely. I think the canal is a great idea. I would love to see you leave the construction crane in with the sky scrapers and squeeze the Up! house in between the construction area and a tall building next to it. Also, instead of connecting the road next to central park and the canal, maybe end that road with a boat rental hut and small parking lot for the park. I know you'll do things your way, which is how it should be. Last suggestion, if the underground railway goes under the canal, it would be fun to see some water leaking through a few bricks in the support wall and a maintenance crew scratching their heads trying to figure out how to fix it. Keep it up!

In Cape town theres a waterfront called "victoria and Alfred waterfront", and in it is a very cool little Bridge called "Basin Swing Bridge" wich woult fit perfectly somewhere in the city's channel walkways!

I thought a nice way to integrate diagon alley and gringots into the city is by utilizing a table hole. You could have half of the alley go along one side of a table hole (facing the table hole) and have another half go along an adjacent side, and then put gringots in the corner (kinda like a right angle design). This way its not tucked away and hidden from sight but rather you'd be able to see it more when you walk around the table but its still integrated in a way that muggles wouldn’t find it. (I can explain my thought more if its unclear)

If you do hinge that one section, hinged lake, so that way its low profile easy to work with, and fits the theme!

If you want some inspiration for the downtown river, you can look up the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. It curves and bends throughout the downtown area

if you put the canal over the access hole with a hinged door you can stick the water element down so it moves with the hinged door. or make it so its braced from the underside and you can pull the whole access door down with the lego on it when you pull i down.

You could utilise the table holes as being big blocks in the city. Build a perimeter of buildings around the table hole with their backs facing the hole and then the table hole could be thought of as a courtyard similar to the architecture in Barcelona

Not related to the modulars, but I have to say that cloud background was a great move, before the tables you couldn't fully visualize but the last shot in this video really shows how well they look and the scaling is perfect.

I'm liking the direction the city is going. The whole process is interesting and generates a ton of ideas. What about some smaller elevation increases? Like make the mils plates along the canal an extra brick high to give the canal some extra depth from the surroundings. I think you can use the standing holes for where the water flows through. You don't need to put plates or anything in it, but have the canal enter and exit it, and thus imply that the water continues through the standing hole.

12:48 maybe you should indeed place a switch so you have two lanes of tracks going through the station but instead of immediatly joining them together again you should place the other switch on the other side of the mountain so you kinda create two loops. that way you can have two trains running

Where the cosy house is would actually be a good place for the Up house, next to the construction site as in the movie that is the last house remaining where construction is happening around it,. Perhaps have it about to take off with some clear bricks. City is slowly taking shape and looking incredible already.

Looking great! Couple thoughts and suggestions that came to mind: instead of doing angled roads, you could add some variety with a roundabout. Where the cozy house is, you should put the Up house instead since it’d be sandwiched between skyscrapers

I have a thought, you could use the opening as a theoretical space. The canal could run "through" the hole and then you wouldn't have to snake it around the opening which may make for a more creative layout approach. And then it might work with the venetian houses to be maybe a half baseplate from edge and the pooling water could feed that way. The cloud background really enhances your city. Such a fantastic decision.

I think it would be cool to take the ninjago city sets, split them in 2 and have the river flowing between them, it would make more sense for the for the various docs builds on the city sets and especially with the full ninjago city docs set

Neat work today. The canal would look good "through " your hatch...instead of going around. Reduce your hatch to 2x3 baseplate and where the canal goes around this woukd be the central park.

I personally would quite like if you rough out the city with basic plates ect then going through each area and making them detailed would be quite cool. You could make playlists for example "Lego detailing downtown part 1 - road plates" or Lego waterways part 1". I'm not sure if that would work algorithm wise but i think it would be pretty neat to say see say like 15 episodes and they're all about detailing a downtown area of a lego city which could cover roads,buildings,parks ect. Then like the canal one could detail water,shipyard,fishing buildings ect. A dedicated one for public transport, one for mountains, one for forestry ect. Idea is that people may go back to them videos to reference them for there own cities.

Question and Idea (nothing negative). Are you eventually going to put in an underwater scene? If so, how will you handle the subway? As always, you do you, because you are doing a great job. I have one idea that you can use or not (but you probably already thought of this anyway). Instead of running the subway around the perimeter in the front where the water is, turn it at the first set of access holes closest to the water and have it run from one side to another along the edge of the access holes, you can have a subway access/station down below there, much like the dungeon or train station under the raised platform from the basement. And you won't hit your head/back on it because it will be running along the edge where you don't scoot underneath it. Then you can still see the subway train run through there, at least from certain angles. We love watching everyday to see what you will come up with next!

6:08 The canal could goi through the access hole it doesn’t have to go around it and here in the UK canals tend to be very straight and it would free up space. For something else such as buildings etc

I’m postponing watching this episode for dinner, but for now I just want to comment I really adore what you’re doing. I’m glad everything with the studio turned out alright and I was and still am very much looking forward to the actual city building process. With that much surface at your disposal you are basically living my dream. Keep up the good work. I think you really know what you’re doing, your mountain will undoubtedly look fantastic and I can’t wait to see how the ocean and the countryside will turn out.

The canal and new layout looks great. You can use some of the smaller leftover buildings and the petrol station to put them behind the beach buildings. Like a little beach town. this way you connect the beach and the city better. Or use some buildings to create a little mountain town somewhere. The venetian houses can also be added to the theme park or the zoo. It would be pretty cool to move the traintrack underground starting at the boutique hotel and get back up at the industrial zone. This way you will have a nice connection between the city, the townhall and the boardwalk at the water (with some nice palm trees). This will make it also nicer to connect the canal with the sea. At the zoo/beach you can make a new underground trainstation. Since you have some woodwork experience now this shouldn't be a problem 😉. And will make an awesome video storyline.

I think the central park would look good if you got rid of the street on both side and made them walking paths. I thought your idea of making the canal go through the part would look great and change things up.

Steps up to the town hall building would make it more of a status feature of the city. Also adds more elevation.

Turn the canal into plates cut in half. The canal doesn't need to be that big! That wat you can still lay in a road.

Just to be pedantic but canals are usually pretty straight , direct point A to B so having a it swerve sharply around the access hole might be a mistake.. unless that particular section was a marina maybe or just a river.

Also build the city as if you were starting it 200 years ago. All the old industry buildings ran along the canal, (many of those buildings today became fancy apartments). Then came the older railroad straight to replace the redundant canal network. Maybe over thinking it but I think if you build it how you think an old city would have naturally evolved then it will come together and make sense.

I think you should take advantage of the access holes and imply its where roads, water or fields are to save on road plates and buy more room.

I was thinking for your train yard you could put in a Railroad Roundhouse. I think that would look cool in the new city. I don't know if that idea had crossed your mind, so I thought I would mention it. No matter what you do, it looks amazing.

I agree that the roads "ending" at the canal path are tricky to deal with, especially with the access hole there. One possibility is to turn them into cul-de-sacs... and another is to elevate them and create a road above the canal connecting them. The first option is easier... and the second has the potential to be amazing, but might also not work out at all. It depends on how realistic you want your city's traffic flow to be... and I'm not sure which of the two would be more realistic, now that I think about it that way. I'll give it some more thought, and if I have any ideas before you make your decision, I'll drop them in the comments of a future video.

I think university building needs to move out of city to more open area with grounds and maybe a sports field. Maybe near zoo or residential area.
