Fantastic vid thank you, these are great little cars even though I have to duck down to see traffic lights if I am first up lol

I appreciate the time you spent making this video for us. It's incredibly helpful. This was my first time changing oil on this type of filter, and your filming made it easy to follow along. Great job on camera positioning and a smooth follow-along. Thanks again!

FYI: I have owned/driven only Toyotas since 1976. That's the year I bought my first new Toyota, a 1976 Celica GT Liftback. Great car. I live in Arizona and for nearly as long I have used only Mobil 1 15/50 oil. It's getting pretty scarce now but I will continue to use it as long as I can find it. Why? Because I believe Toyota (and others) no longer want our engines to last for 200K+ miles. They discovered that it's costing them a lot of money if we don't replace their cars more often. Of course they will never admit this and you certainly don't have to agree with me but you all should at least give this some thought.

Thanks for making this. Hadn’t seen this type of filter before.

Thanks for this. Bought one of these used recently and had no idea it used cartridges. Found a Lexus/Toyota/Scion cup wrench at the local auto parts store next to the filters. Also, it looks like in 2010 Toyota decided there was no reason to use 5W20. 2010- XDs only state 0W20 on the fill cap.

Make sure that's the correct fill cap for the car...owner's manual should tell you what the correct oil weight is
@StaTBMK3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisfreemesser It's the correct cap. 2009 was the last year they were recommending 5W20. You can pull up the owner's manuals for each year digitally on Toyota's site. 2010 onward only has 0W20 listed in the specifications.

the saturating is always a good idea but we never did that at the dealership. and i highly doubt anyone does that at any oil change spot also you can use 0-20 with no issues i believe the cap says 5-20, 0-20
@matthewbunker10072 жыл бұрын
Actually mine says 0-w20 only

In case you missed it, all that oil he put on the filter drained out while he was crossing & uncrossing the threads on the housing during installation. Waste of oil.

How much oil does it take?

Roughly 4 quarts...I'll put in 3.5 to start and then check the level and top off as-needed

Guess what 0W-20 is even better for all year use.

The recommended oil for the car is 5W-20, and I've leaned my lesson about not second guessing the engineers who design cars...
@njsongwriter4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisfreemesser The W stands for winter and only represents the viscosity of the oil before the engine warms up. The 20 is the viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature. We used 0W-30 in our 1996 Accord and our 2002 CR-V. I don't even know what the recommended viscosity was. I believe the Accord had 185,000 miles on it when we gave it to our son. The CR-V had 224,000 on it when we sold it. The engine was fine in both vehicles.

I bought a drain plug at advance auto parts that brings the screw and a rubber washer (12mm). However, the washer you showed is solid? How come?

Synthetic is always best
@ThepDenNgoaiBien3 жыл бұрын
does that need Synthetic oil or Conventional oil??? BIG DIFFERENT? Yes?
@chrisfreemesser3 жыл бұрын
The car does not REQUIRE synthetic but I use it in both of my cars. The Scion has 168k miles on it now with zero engine issues...doesn't even use any oil between changes
