Hey Mike thanks for the info, it's a good idea to lubricate the O rings before reassembly so there's less chance of binding. If you do your own changes an ez oil drain valve is nice, install it once then crack open a valve to drain the oil no more pulling plugs and reinstalling worrying about cross threading it or not over tightening.
@mmcgarry73846 жыл бұрын
Peter Bilt what would be ok to use to lubricate these O rings? Would it be ok to use WD 40 or something like that?

The cartridge filter is disposable just like a canister spin-on filter is. It just takes a few extra minutes to take off the oil filter cap to access it.

Good job. I would just add that you should always lube the o rings so they don't bind on re-installation.

Phil Dern what would be good to use to lube the O rings, WD 40?
@MichaelWilliams-qk9rm5 жыл бұрын
Not WD40. Either oil or an o ring specific lube. When installing them dry u can cut them or roll them over and create a leak.

Hey Mike thanks for the vid....I like checking everybody's oil change vids, as I might learn something new. I found Costco to have the best price on Mobil 1 0W20 when it's on instant rebate....stock up & be sure to check their website, that's actually where I've found the best price by a tad. At that time it'll usually be $28/6 qt case....as you know a perfect amount for one oil change....I usually forego the .2 qt per spec. And then the Mobil 1 filters from Amazon are usually the best price I can find for about $16 - $19 ea, as their price has fluctuated a bit. With current supplies my cost is $45.49 per change. I think Mobil & Toyota recommend every 10k miles....not quite sure how frequently I'll change mine.
@bigriver32785 жыл бұрын
....oh and the oil is sold in quart containers so you don't have to guess or try to read that terrible dipstick. The one down side is that they aren't as easily used to recycle your used oil.

I've put lots of miles on vehicles by using Mobil 1. I certainly like the mobil1 filter better you showed. The Orings are better too I bet.

Should wet the dry filter with clean oil... Its helps the oil flow on that first startup. Also keeps the filter safe rather than oil being blasted in from the pump.

@Your moms HITACHI Not 100% sure your right. So you're telling me when you put oil into the engine where the oil filler cap is that it will fill the oil pan AND the filter housing both. So next time, (actually next week) when I change my oil if I don't add any oil to the oil filter housing cap to saturate my new filter and simply install it dry, your telling me that after filling my engine with the designated capacity of oil and without starting my engine if I remove the drain plug on the oil filter cap, oil will drain from the filter housing (if I insert the drain piece that came with the filter). Right? Is this a bet? Cause I don't believe it because the dip-stick level changes after starting the engine because the filter housing doesn't fill with oil until the engine is started.

How do you like Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20?? Seems like lots of Tacoma Gen 3 owners are using Mobil 1 in the 3.5l V-6??
@DrivenCompanion5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've been happy with it. I don't have a real strong preference one way or another but do prefer to use a high quality product because of the large investment I've made in this truck.
@NovianComposer4 жыл бұрын
I agree with Mike. Better to use more expensive oil and high quality filters than to pay for a new engine at 100k miles. Saves hassle and 1-2 grand in the long run, plus ease of mind knowing that the truck won’t quit on you. In regard to the oil type, use Mobil One or Pennzoil. These 2 brands had the best results for protection, sustained lubrication across wide temperature ranges, and combustion byproduct absorption. If you can buy these in bulk to help cut down on cost, these brands will serve you well through 200k miles.

What is the price difference in getting it maintained as compared to DIY?
@NovianComposer4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what products you use. Most oil change places, (JiffyLube, etc), will change about $70-$95 dollars for the 6-quart “premium name brand” that is a full synthetic. Mobil One seems to be the favorite among the shops in my area in VA. With that said, if you bought the Mobil One oil off of amazon or at your local auto parts store along with the filter cartridge, it will usually cost sub-$60. Or if you buy in bulk like I do, I have gotten my oil change cost down to $42. Even if you have no tools needed for the oil change, DIY oil changes will pay for them within 2 years. Hope this helps!
@jamiesmith69186 ай бұрын
(acknowledging this is an old video and thread) For me it's never been about money. It's about peace of mind of the job being done right. The cost savings will be negligible. The time difference between DIY and driving, waiting, getting the job done, and driving back home will be negligible. But putting your own eyes and hands under your own vehicle every 5k miles (or whatever your interval) is priceless. I'd much rather spot a problem with my car myself than take anyone else's word for it (as far as spotting any leak or cracked hose or belt or whatever.)

Great detailed video. However, I would start the engine after putting in the first 5.5 qts and let it run for 5 min or so, then let it sit for 10 min, then check the level. It'll be more accurate than checking it immediately after filling. You could wind up overfilling it that way. Good job tho! Also, man that filter housing design has to be the most ridiculous, unnecessarily complicated mess I've ever seen. Come on Toyota! I'm trading my 2017 Frontier Pro4X for a 2020 TRD Off-Road come spring. The Frontier has been a huge disappointment, it's not as reliable as it use to be and is very unrefined. I almost wish I'd have got a Tacoma back in 2017, but now I'm glad I waited for the 2020 because they finally addressed some of the annoying issues with the Tacoma... they added power seat, LED exterior lights, Android Auto, etc. Now it's everything I want.
@ThepDenNgoaiBien6 жыл бұрын
toyota had TRD filter so you can use together with 20,000 miles or 1 year oil change...$15.00 I think.....the one you take out fron your truck I think that is a regular one....step up to TRD filter so you can keep in there for 1 year....my 2cents

Tacoma gen 2 are so much easier to change oil and filter. Oh, and the transmissions dont fail.
@NovianComposer4 жыл бұрын
From what I’ve seen on forms and talking to other Tacoma owners, they don’t seem to be any problems with the reliability of the transmission. It’s the shift logic combined with the gear ratio of 3.9 that makes the truck seem bogged down and jerky. Many owners who switched to the Nitro Gears 4.88 or 5.29 ratios get better fuel economy and better response along with a smoother shifting transmission.

Next time use AMSOIL. Best oil that money can buy.
@taplinger6 жыл бұрын
Only problem with Amsoil is when your truck is still under warranty. Amsoil's good for 25K miles but Toyota requires changing at 10k miles to keep the warranty intact so until the warranty's expired Amsoil is overkill. Speaking of overkill, the dealer did the last free oil change 10K miles ago so I went to do the next one myself and guess what? The oil is clear amber like new and up to the top line. Whoever says Toyota doesn't make good engines is retarded. Disclaimer: I don't do short trips in cold weather, no stop and go driving, no trailer hauling. Any or all of those 3 can shorten the life of the oil.
@stephenmaurer70086 жыл бұрын
AMSOIL seems like a great product. However, Toyota is going to want to see that your doing 10k oil changes with a proper filter/element and a 0w20 oil that meets this engines specs. Mobil 1, Castrol Syn, Valvoline Syn, Pennzoil Syn, etc. should do just fine.
