I'm just graduating from my English Literature degree, and my friend is graduating from English Literature & Philosophy as a combined course. She believes that her knowledge of literature massively helped her with her philosophy studies (and vise versa) so feel confident that you have a VERY strong knowledge base going forward. Good luck!

Great choice Ruby - I've found that philosophy is one of the few university courses which really forces you to analyse and deconstruct arguments logically and critically form opinions for yourself. You'll gain a skillset which benefits you in the long run especially outside of uni

I think you nailed it when you said getting rejected from Oxford was a blessing in disguise. I don't believe in coincidence but only God closing doors to opportunities that aren't meant for us or could harmus. Your face while talking about RS and your firm Uni was one of pure joy. Ruby the exact same thing happened to me only a little earlier. I had wanted to study English literature since I was 12 years old at Magdalen college Oxford and was obsessed with getting in. I read so many books watched interviews, went to lectures just like you. My school were even helping me in year 10 as they thought I had a good shot. But then I had a revelation and realised that I was more excited about studying at Oxford than I was about the actual course. And I looked at other courses and came to the realisation it went for me. So then I did a complete U turn and am now applying to study Medicine, something that I had briefly toyed with but had ignored because English had always been my dream. Whilst I’m not as naturally good at the sciences as I am at English I enjoy it do much more and am so glad that I was able to see past my admiration for Oxford and do something I truly love. So happy that you are in that place now, it’s really lovely when you finally realise what you were meant to do ❤️

I switched from Chemistry to Law at Edinburgh having put my heart and soul into my Chemistry Advanced Higher (Scottish equivalent of A levels - hours on end in labs and even more hours studying) and having interviewed at Oxford for it, and it was the best decision I've ever made. I absolutely agree with Oxford clouding your judgement to your subject! I switched even though I'd done only STEM subjects for the past 2 years at school apart from Higher (AS/A level) English. It was a challenge at first but studying Law is amazing and I'll never look back. I chose Chemistry not wholly for me but for the pressure I was put under to choose a STEM subject as a woman and the fact I'd done well in my Higher. Ruby, I wish you all the best on your next adventure and I hope to meet you someday! I can't wait to hear more of your adventures on this next chapter in your life

Exeter is an absolutely gorgeous city full of history and culture! I went to college there and studied music for three years before going to do music at Falmouth uni. I’m so proud to call the south west my home and Exeter has played a huge role in that. I hope you love it there as much as I did. Good luck with your studies!

I'm almost certain that the whole Oxbridge process is although amazing, it's incredibly likely to cloud judgement and distract your focus from other options. Wait a year and reapply for your new degree choice at oxbridge. Have Exeter as an insurance. Don’t force yourself to go to uni straight after college just because that’s what all your friends are doing

Oxford is not at all A*A*A*! I've got an offer for AAA and they even allowed me to do a retake - I currently have AAB. By all means everyone should do what they feel is right for them but its not true that Oxford is that harsh!

I'm so happy for you Ruby! I also got rejected from my dream school (Duke University), I was born there and have wanted to go back since 12. I took a gap year to reapply but still got rejected. I was devastated and I could really relate to you when I saw your video about your rejection from Oxford. This sounds like such a good choice for you!! Also, you don’t necessarily have to give up on the dream of Oxford! An undergraduate degree is undoubtedly just the start for you. I had dreamed of Cambridge my whole life but moved to Canada when I was 14. I couldn’t afford to apply and attend Cambridge for undergrad so I went to UBC. But as of about a month ago I have now confirmed my place at Cambridge for an MPhil in Archaeology! Oxford wasn’t right for you right now but I’m sure your path will lead you there eventually, and now with a subject that you are so passionate about! Good luck at Exeter, soak up every minute of it, uni goes by so fast!

I did the same thing! I applied for Japanese at Cambridge, because that was what I always wanted to do, but then ended up changing to social sciences (HSPS, the course that Ibz Mo started out with) during my first term. I totally don't regret my decision, I feel so much happier on my new course - Japanese just wasn't right for me. I'm so glad that you worked out what you wanted before you go to uni though, changing subjects after you start is an administrative nightmare! Enjoy your time after exams, it's precious x

I love this video! I really admire how you have decided to follow your passions. I study psychology at Edinburgh University and I've had family members and other people ask why i am studying psychology because it is not 'employable.' But honestly i can't imagine studying anything else. It is so important to enjoy your degree and i believe enjoying your degree gets you better grades than doing a degree for the sake of a degree. This video has made me feel more sure about my decision. As long as i am interested and motivated, then i am doing the right thing. Good luck for the future :) x

It’s really really nice of your university to make it easy for students to switch! 👍💞 Can’t even tell how envious I am haha. Sad story about my experience - before I entered university, I was going back and forth with languages and mass communication, just like you with English literature and philosophy. In the end I picked communication just because I thought it provided skills that I couldn’t really learn outside of school, which I can with languages. I regretted my decision even before uni started. 😣 After the very first semester, I was more certain that a degree in communication isn’t what I want to spend four years of time and money pursuing. So I applied for changing majors. I’m Asian and what’s terrible about Asian educational system was perfectly manifested here. I was told by my interviewers who are also professors in the French department that my grades were not good enough, and that I should’ve got higher grades to show them my determination to switch major. 😢 I didn’t get accepted, left with no choice but stay in the communication department. I’ll be a junior soon in the upcoming school year, and I can’t wait to graduate. I hate how they judge students merely by their grades, especially since the major wasn’t even of interest to me. I spoke some French during the interview to show that I’d already learnt some of it, but they only cared about that transcript. Though it was no surprise that they didn’t let me switch major, I should’ve followed my heart and studied languages instead of picking what appears more practical which I don’t want to do as my career at all 😞
