Good day sir. I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I just replaced my water pump on my 97 series detroit 60 and your video was a lot of help. My dipstick was a lot further back so I didn't have to contend with that. My biggest issue was getting the new pump to seat flush. The O ring was stopping it from seating completely no matter how much I twisted and pushed. I had to get the 3 bolts started then torque them each a little at a time to draw it in flush. I'm not super mechanically inclined so I was pretty proud of myself. So far it's all holding together. 🤞 thanks again sir.

A little oil on the O-ring will help it go on, I don't know if you did that. Thanks for commenting.

I heard those downpipes were expensive, but I didn't know they were crazy-expensive... and they now seem to be an endangered species. Up here in the Great White North where we put more salt on our roads than we do on our food, those downpipes on FLD's would be LUCKY to see 4 years. I knew a guy who after having to buy one, just resigned himself to cleaning it off, and re-painting it every summer in an effort to make it last longer. I'm sort of surprised that you didn't go around to some of the (collar-swivel) fittings and douse them with a penetrant of some sort. Obviously, they came apart nicely, except for the dipstick tube (ironically, the one that should have been self-lubed by oil...). All in all, it was a fine job, though.
@57bagre6 жыл бұрын
I'm doing a video on painting that pipe and show what happened to my old one. I do hope you use more salt on the road than on your food, the Doc says don't put too much salt on your food.

You need to use a nitrate supplement in your motor . Get test strips you dip in coolant adjust until the color is right on the chart. It will save you a lit of issues the economy antifreeze will not usully have nitrate additive

Gordon Robertson I only said it because when I bought mine 14l Detroit two Mechanic’s told me it was bad for the liners so I flushed it out. I figured it was bs tho
@prevost86866 жыл бұрын
Gordon Robertson It’s not the color. It’s the fact that regular green coolant doesn’t have the anti cavitation additives needed for diesels. NAPA sells their coolant additive that’ll bring it up to diesel specs for about $15 .
@57bagre6 жыл бұрын
Wayne Swicegood I know about the phosphate level in the coolant, I added that to mine about 16 years ago when I bought it and ran about 900,000 miles and don't know how many times I had to add antifreeze in those years (green from the auto parts store) and never added phosphate additive again. I did an in frame overhaul on it at 1,487,XXX miles almost 2 years ago and the liners were clean, no pits, just a very minimal pitting in the block in one cylinder. I'm not saying it doesn't do anything but is somewhat over rated as much as over priced antifreeze at the dealer. It is a good idea to use the additive but not an emergency and in my case, I don't put a lot of miles on it anymore and will get some additive some day. Thanks for watching.

Hi Gordon , do those pumps ever leak on the gear side and contaminate the oil ?
@57bagre6 жыл бұрын
Not likely, it has 2 seals, 1 on the antifreeze side, and it does have a weep hole to let antifreeze out before it gets to the other seal that keeps the oil in the gear case.

Car coolant will eat the liners in a diesel. There is a real reason you have to check nitrate levels. You can get extended life coolant for diesel engines for the same price as auto coolant.
@57bagre6 жыл бұрын
It will never hurt this motor doing local low speed short runs. It's the long term high engine speed, high mileage/ hours engines that are threatened by "green" antifreeze, not weather gas or diesel.
