I’m a New York City- born and raised Chinese American. My mother is Hakka and while I never learned to speak Hakka since Mandarin is what was spoken at home, I was heavily influenced by my mother’s ways. I experienced her courageous, hard-working, talented, and kindness and am proud that I am half Hakka.

I learned about Hakka(客家) for the first time when we travelled to Penang, Malaysia. I was fascinated about Hakka from dining Hakka food to discover that Hakka people pronounce many Chinese characters as Koreans do. I felt there has to be some link. There aren't many studies made on this area but I think there is a huge discoveries to be made. I am too old to do that now, near 90 yrs old.

Yes there is chemistry between Hakka people(or some of them) and Koreans. It’s at the genetic level. Kithans/Hakka originated from thereabouts, dongbei north of Korea I think. Also think Tang Dynasty remnants settled Korea. Could check up Joseon Korean Dynasty. They created current Korean alphabets, if not wrong.

Meizhou is the ancestral place of most overseas Hakka due to its geographical location. I have a video for this part of story kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWmpgoGDp9SYmcU. As a result, people gave Meizhou a name 世界客都。 It's hard to translate but I would translate it as Capital of Overseas Hakka. But some people just translate it as Hakka Capital, which is incorrect. Despite of the geopolitical tensions, there's no problem for an American to travel in China. There's no hatred towards American people in the society. It's very safe to travel in China even for an American. So welcome to the historical places and modern cities in China, Ray!

A part of me was Cháozhōu (Father side) and Hakka (Mother side) i was born as Overseas, on some small island in Indonesia, where the Overseas there dominated by Hakka who's speak Fui chew variant. I always fascinated with my Hakka root because this Dialect is the only Chinese dialect I capable spoken. Not a single a word in Cháozhōu dialect 😂 I'd like to add some more information about successful Overseas Hakka people (if you don't mind) from Indonesia : 1. Cheong Fatt Tze / Zhāngbìshì ( 張弼士) , originally from Dabu, Meizhou. It said when he died in Batavia (Jakarta now) 1916. The British colony raise a flag half pole to honour him. His Wine business still running now adays in China (Changyu Castel brand) 2. Low Fang Pak / Luófāng bó ( 羅芳伯) who established Lanfong/ Lanfang Republic on Borneo Island, 1777. 3. Tjong A Fie / Zhāng'āhuī ( 張阿輝 ) originally from Meixian, Guangdong. Successful build his business from scratch, friend with North Sumatra Sultan (Deli Sultan) and Dutch Colony, This guy name was more famous than Cheong Fat Tze, event the late Fat Tze was richer. Tjong A Fie died in Medan (North Sumatra) 1921. His Mansion still preserved until these day as Tjong A Fie Museum. and probably there's some more names that I forgot to mention 😊 Cheers.

13:50 That is a beautiful watchtower! When was it built (I assume before the Ming Great Wall, 1500s, since you said that these hollow watchtowers inspired the ones on the Great Wall)? How old is the city wall in general?
@yanyangoaroundinchina
@yanyangoaroundinchina Жыл бұрын
I think the current city wall was restored in 2012. The original wall was torn down or collapsed. The section on the hill was restored in 2019 and that's when the watchtower you mentioned was built. Does the answer disappoint you? I just did some research. The watchtowers on the wall of Tingzhou were different from the ones on the Great Wall. They were just small shelters called 窝铺。The original ones might have been constructed in 1371. There were 81 of them.
@joeyp1927

Just some history nerd info and I discussed this with Chinese people before. I don't think it translates correctly so many people label things that are older than even 100 years old, "ancient". Ancient history - Is everything before about the year 500 AD of recorded history which goes back about 5,000 years. It is from the invention of writing and the fall of the Ancient Western part of the Roman Empire. Pre history - Anything before the invention of writing spanning 100,000s of thousands of years. Medieval history (or) The Middle Ages - From the years about 500 AD- 1500 AD. 1500 - 1800 AD Early Modern History Or just 1500-present is known as Moden History.

What a charming city. I much prefer seeing this kind of place in China where at least there are historical buildings constructed before 1949. Very few buildings built under Communism hold any attraction to me; they are stilted, faux-grandiose for a political purpose, out of character to the lanscape (Feng Shui), and poorly constructed. Old China buildings, especially classical buildings, are built for endurance, have history, largely non-egotistical functionality, have good Feng Shui and a classical China architecture style. This is what educated Westerners want to see. Wonderful.

from linguistic point of view, hakka has so much mandarin soundings that i suspect they were originally from the south, millions of them moved north following the taipin 's army coat tail and families, they lived in the north for a while hence had to learn mandarin, but couple generation passed, they moved back south as the taipin started to lose battles and they themselves were purged by northerners, and some northerners who had relation with also moved to south with them, hence one can see many of them moved back south in successive waves, ...today one can still hear them speak with northern influences, i.e. heavily peasant southerner tongue blended with mandarin accent ! Mystery solved. you hear from here first.

@@yanliew4027 their language really nothing likes mandarin. Mandarin has a lot of tonguial voice which Hakkanese doesn't have. Hakkanese is a South Islanders' language. Mandarin and Hakkanese belong to different language systems.

@@一字并肩王 fake history. According to historical records, Hakka was not classified as Han chinese during Ming and Qin dynasty. They have their own tribal law that different from general Han region. Hakka classified as Han people during Republic of China era. At that time, ROC invaded by Japan. The southern ROC regime wanted to independent from ROC. For propaganda purpose, the government made up a story about Hakka migration from the north to keep the country united.

Hakka are Kithan/kithai /Cathay People. They married into noble Chinese houses, which formed Sui and Tang Dynasty. They followed their ideas, Not Chinese. But made plenty of claims as Han Chinese. Examples like Tang dowager promoting Hua Mulan ballad, who was Kithan xianbei against Rouran xianbei, as very “Han Chinese” like, to be accepted into China. Note how Disney promoted Hua mulan. Hakka have western bloodlines. Blond hair quite afew. But Tang and Hakka in truth flouted established Han Chinese principles and practices, like Confucian, as well as Taoist ones. Led to constant decline of China up to now. They likely do not acknowledge/revere/respect Yellow Emperor as founding establishment of China. Which all Chinese do. Their “own” idea. The Tang Dynasty maternal Kithan side, schemed and overthrew Tang, and took over western stretches of north China from east,somewhere above Korea. But the jurchens(jin) in turn took over eastern stretches of North China, leaving Kithans the Western stretch. Until the Mongols. Who I think were totally disgusted with them, and razed them barring Buddhist monasteries, to the ground. Southern Song China was strictly Han Chinese....until Song fell. And Kithan Hakka made their way into Han Chinese lands. Building fortress houses for some reason. Southern China was already settled. No idea why Kithan had to make their way there, from wherever they came from. Whereupon at a point, they plotted to massacre Cantonese people, for their lands. Was some collusion with Manchuria Qing. But after which Manchuria Qing sided with Cantonese against Hakka. Trust issues I Guess. Just like Lee Kuan Yew and Thaksin Shinawatra? Lee Kuan Yew did, and intended a lot of good. But it was led astray. Shinawatra? If you kept with the news, you’d know how it went. More revealing is in how they tried to bribe opinion in southern Thailand with over exorbitant rice prices, which were not requested by Farmers, and unaffordable by government or common sense. Lots of farmers were left hanging as a consequence at that time. Question of self dignity and actual worth....versus an overtopped unrequested indulgence, I Guess. Glad to see Thailand pretty steady at the moment, considering factors and comparing other states. Hope it stays. There appears to be a build up of Hakka blooded offsprings there.
