Channel Drains - Patio Flooding - Fixing An Existing Drainage System

In this video we make improvements to an existing drainage system to help prevent the patio from flooding. Whenever we come across poorly installed systems we do our best to help our client by fixing the issues. Unfortunately because money was already spent to have this existing drainage system installed not that long ago, it ruins the budget to have a new system properly installed that would not have these issues. Research the drainage company before you have them do work on your property to avoid a poor install.

I've seen some installs where the channel drain is at the end of the patio. Isn't that where you'd want it with a pitched patio? I've also seen them against the house like in this video so I'm confused what's proper.

I would say that that channel is too close to the property. Here in the UK it’s recommended that they are not put that close to the property walls

Looks fine to me, you want to catch water before it pools at the foundation.

We had to work with the existing channel drains. System now functions properly and we have had no call backs.

If you level the channel drain how does the water know which way to go?

Good question, water travels the path of least resistance so once it enters a channel drain that is level it will go down both directions. This is why we always recommend that both sides to your channel drain system have a way for water to escape.
