I have a Toronto Prince story, he would go to a club called This is London and a friend of mine was a server there in the bottle service area and she had Prince a few times and he would order bottles for his entourage but for himself he wanted his own drinks brought. He told her he didn’t want his individual drinks on the tab and each time she brought him a drink he paid with a $100 bill and tell her to keep the change.

I too, have noticed the price creep at the big box stores here in the states. This is why I purchased most of my vinyl used at thrift stores and on eBay.

Minneapolis is my home. Fetus is great. The old Cheapo Uptown was actually bigger than the one now. Roadrunner is great. So many other great ones. Barely Brothers, Agartha, Mill City Sound, and Hymies.

Minneapolis local here, some other great record stores you missed that you should 100% check out next time you're here (in no particular order) are Disco death, lucky cat records, the record spot, urban lights music, Mill City sound, extreme noise records. And if you want to make a little drive there is a cocktail listening bar called macanda HiFi!

As far as Target here in the states, their records are over priced so I tend to wait a couple months and they inevitably go on clearance. I picked up a copy of Pearl James new 40 plus dollar record for $12 a week ago
@dannyb.3924
@dannyb.3924 5 ай бұрын
There is a Target near me that places the clearance LPs in a wooden crate. I recently picked up Tina Turner's Simply The Best which is a hits collection for $11.49 and Kacey Musgraves's Deeper Well for $10.37. Have found some other excellent deals there as well.

$30 is not overpriced for something that was 9 10 dollars in the early 80s! It's unreasonable to expect it not to increase in especially in this recession! On the inflation calculator it comes out almost exactly $30!

This video was so much fun and you certainly kept it visually interesting, not like visiting the neighbors to see their crummy vacation slides! Really enjoyable seeing Sir Frank and his Royal Family embracing the summer! Loved The Fetus! Imagine all the hippies who hung out there when it opened in 1968! Acid flashbacks haunting that place! Welcome home, man, and thanks for sharing this really cool holiday trip! 💿

Such a well put together adventure, Frank! The Barnes & Noble store managers have been given a lot of independence by the mothership, which has worked well for the chain. My closest B & Ns (San Gabriel Valley & Long Beach, Calif.) both still have pretty good music sections, although the CD section is smaller due to competition with LPs.

Loved this video Frank! It’s always great to see you and your wife together in your videos. Sounded like you all had a great time. As far as Prince goes, we’re fans too. We’ve followed him since his debut,”For You.,” mainly due to where I grew up. “Purple Rain” is a great recording and was originally mastered by Bernie Grundman. Hello Frank & Sheri. I noticed Sheri always mentions Texas. I saw them on their first tour for Southside in Philadelphia at a small club, the Chestnut Cabaret, for only $8 US. Included was also a cassette copy of Southside. Cassettes at that time were around $8 so essentially, I got the show for free. Loved them ever since. Have a serious crush on Sharleen Spiteri, still.😍😍😍

Great video Frank! Nice to see something a bit different. And perhaps from somewhere I'll never get a chance to go to. Kudos for including us on your outing. I agree with the idea that smaller record stores are better. Although not always. We have a brand new family owned record store that's opened up recently near me. I dropped in to support them. It's small, clean and well run. But I found their prices a bit higher than usual. Keep your Discogs close at hand to compare prices! Keep on spinning Frank 👍

Cool video! Minneapolis/St.Paul is my hometown (St.Paul specificially), so this video naturally appealed to me. I actually met Prince at Cheapo in Minneapolis in 2009. I filmed a video a few years ago telling about it on my channel, and wrote in my blog about it in 2009. So, while The Electric Fetus may have been his favorite record store, he shopped for music at many places. He even owned a clothing store down the street from Cheapo on Lake Street at 1 point (Cheapo was located in a few spots, but the previous address was on Lake Street). It was called "New Power Generation" which of course was the band and Fanclub he formed (after The Revolution broke up). So if/when you make another trip down to the Twin Cities, you probably should plan to spend some more time at Cheapo. Even besides the Minneapolis location, the St.Paul one is worth checking out as well, which is 1 of my wife and I'd regular RSD spots; we kind of stopped going to the Fetus for RSD (chronicled in our Record Store Day Videos on my channel going back 10 years), due to how mobbed it became. Having to take a number and wait hours to finally go try and pickup the special RSD items. But yeah, the Twin Cities do have a lot to go see and do, beyond even the Mall of America. And music stores included. My favorites in recent years beyond Cheapo are Agharta Records and Barely Brothers in St.Paul. I guess it depends on how much time you have and what you are looking to do. Restaurants, Sports, Theater or Museums even? etc.

Great video Frank and Sheri! I love it as I live just slightly northwest of Minneapolis about 13/14 miles away. I love Electric Fetus. They used to have one in Duluth but that closed in either 2020 or 2021. I loved going there every year when we take our annual trips. And of course the one in Minneapolis is great! I live just a few minutes from the Cheapo records in Blaine and go there monthly. Another fun place to go! I am glad you enjoyed your time here! Wow. Those ACDC gold albums here are $60 each. Even with the exchange, that sounds like a good deal. Roadrunner reminds of what Rotate This was like in Toronto, but before they moved 2 times ago. I haven't even been in the new store since they moved to their most recent store. It's always places like that in those small places that have great stuff. Sweet score that Skynard album had everything in it.

I live in a northwest suburb of Minneapolis. I shop at the Blaine Cheapo and sometimes the Maple Grove Down in the Valley. Cheapo stores definitely have a large selection of new and used. My only complaint with their used is they put a price on the vinyl center’s track listing. Those are hard to remove. What gets me with Best Buy is they dropped physical movie discs in store and online but now they are carrying 1000s of records online. No reason they couldn’t have kept movie discs online too. There’s probably a huge profit margin on these older records that keep getting reissued. My price cap for a record is $40. Hope you enjoyed Minneapolis.

Twin Cities 33-er, and I will point you to Mill City Records (Hopkins, MN), and Hymie's Records on Lake Street. They are both size-wise between the Cheapo you went to and Electric Fetus. So, pretty big, great selection of used, great vibes. I haven't been to Road Runner, will check it out. Electric Fetus seems like a clique-ish place the times I've been there. Don't need to go back.

Hello Frank ! Excellent roadtrip for you and your nice family. You have some huge sized record stores on that side of the puddle. The average here in Sweden are about half of the Roadrunner records store featured in your video. Hence ; a much larger selection available for you guys. I’m a little surprised about the rising prices though. Yours doesn’t seem to stop. Here they’ve gone up a little for new releases and reissues on two separate occations. Once in 2019 and the other 2023. We pay about $22-$26 usd for an Lp and $33-$47 usd for a double album. (approximately calculated from Swedish crowns) Used records have stayed about the same since 2015-16. Normally $3-$8 usd. Rare used records goes for what supply and demand dictates of course. Starting around $25/$30 usd and upwards to $350/$450 usd for boxsets and audiophile pressings. They all know if they push too hard , we push back by NOT buying anything , because we’re stubborn sums-a-beechez. Keep rocking. /R

Minneapolis is on my radar the next time the Dodgers are in town, thanks for the tip on Electric Fetus Records … just askin’ .. did they have a personalized bag for your records? .. I save them

They did... it was a brown paper bag with the name of the store on it.

Too bad you missed the 40th anniversary special edition of purple rain just released that is only sold at electric fetus and the online prince store…a pretty cool looking purple splatter. Although I’m seeing reviews online that it’s not that great quality of pressing. Glad you had a great trip - Mpls (my hometown) is a cool city.

Jesus Christ! Not only was Frank in my city, he was also in my neighborhood! I live close to Roadrunner Records so I was surprised that Frank was aware of it. Mill City Sound in Hopkins would have been a great place to find used records and he could have visited K-Tel drive while he was out there.

Hey Frank I too was just in Minneapolis, got back yesterday saw GREENDAY and Metallica there over the weekend 🤘 I too went to the Fetus and agree with your comments, it was crazy busy in there when we were there, I think due to many in town for the shows. Sheri destined the other part of EF aptly, as my lovely wife said almost the exact same thing. I also went to Roadrunner and again agree with your sentiments, great store, I needed some more time though, again more new then I expected. Lastly I also went to a Target, selection was meh and prices nothing special, the only thing it had going for it were target exclusives. Urban outfitters had some albums again price was not great and selection was standard fair. Great video and glad your trip went well. For the record Metallica was good GREENDAY was awesome!! Between the two shows I was 10 sets, 9 bands, and 2 stadiums. Great weekend! Next time head to Matt’s to eat, go for a Jucy Lucy. Take care Frank

Wow a 7 hour drive. Mind you you did have stoppages. I don't mind the silver boarders, but the main picture on the Purple Rain is far too dark. It doesn't look right as opposed to the original I thought the Lynyrd Skynyrd original issue would be scarce and expensive. Suprisingly, it's quite cheap.

It should be "1000s more vinyl records..."; what's tripping you up is the word "vinyl" alone. I too find it strange when my daughter asked me "how many vinyls do you have?". But I guess there are many words for the same thing: album, LP, record, vinyl, 12" (which is particularly jarring since it means a 12" single to me, but not to the younger generation.)

MCA never did “recall” SS Flame cvr they just ceased making the cover and took the photo from the back and repositioned the titles and pressed a new version of the cover . Everyone gets it wrong by claiming they airbrushed the flames out . That is incorrect. The back photo is a different picture but was from the same photo shoot. The og cvr was shipped in large quantities thus not a difficult record to find . Still it is one of Skynyrd’s best . Interesting Ed King and two members of Blackfoot Greg T Walker (bass) and Rickey Medlicke (drums )is playing on that album .”One More Time “is a earlier take on a song unreleased and did some overdubs creating a releasable version . It is rumored that Pyle and Gaines were given the task of going through Skynyrd’s vault and selecting songs for a album to be released shorty after SS. Of course at the time no title was chosen but due to plane crash it was titled Skynyrd’s First and Last .
