No, no, no. Not Rubbing Alcohol! Rubbing has oils included in it for the purpose of rubbing sore muscles. Isopropyl alcohol contains no other agents and will not leave a film behind when mixed with distilled water.

Quick question Frank regarding the ratio mix. I get the iso-distilled ratio but how much Kodak flow agent to you use? I primarily use the Spin Clean system but always wondered what the mix of the Kodak product was in case I need to just clean a few records by hand. Thanks.

Isopropyl alcohol is also widely used for cleaning bicycles. An overlooked source of it may be a bike shop or car parts shop. The most popular is called Muc Off and is coloured bright pink so it should be easy to spot. And no, it won't stain your vinyl pink, I've been using it for years.

Frank, I have found the PERFECT record cleaning solution: in a 1 quart plastic container I mix: 1/4 - 99% Isopropyl alcohol 3/4 Distilled water, 10 drops of Kodak Photo-Flo. Cap it and lightly mix, then let it sit for at least one day. Trust me, it works GREAT, especially with a MOFI Record cleaning felt brush, but be sure to rinse the record immediately with distilled water. If using a vacuum record cleaning machine, go ahead and rinse the record TWICE following using this cleaning solution. It WORKS GREAT and it's cheap. For those that have purchased Audio Intelligent Record Cleaning Solutions, their 32 0z bottles work awesome (the ones with the flip open plastic spouts, not the pull open caps).

Hey there, Frank...I've loved the channel for a long time now and have recommended your videos to many...I work in a store where I've picked up quite a few boxes over the years...Something to keep in mind next time you go shopping and it doesn't hurt to ask for them...I have found that the large boxes that contain the 4 liter bottles of Carlo Rossi Burgundy or Sangria wine happen to be just the right size for LP records...Plus, if they are sturdy enough to handle large glass bottles of wine, they are fine for the records...I also save some of the mailer pads I get from online record orders and use them as buffers at either end of the box to keep everything upright...I can fit a good 85-100 records per box depending on the thickness of the albums, sometimes less with double album sets...I have also found that roma tomato boxes work surprisingly well to corral any old 45's you have sitting around..You can fit 2 rows of 45's in each box and they have lids, too...When a friend of mine moved, he transported his entire 5,000+ 45 rpm collection across state lines in those boxes and all of them were stacked on a shipping pallet wrapped in cellophane...Speaking of those shipping pallets, which can often be obtained for free by looking around, the wood can be used to create some very rustic LP crates or a nice record stand for your turntable and records...More good tips to keep in mind!

I used to use magic eraser but when I read the instructions and they said be careful on shiny surfaces that it may dull them. I wanted to know what was in Magic eraser there is no chemicals in it but I found out the way they designed it. I use the small Walmart boxes. They’re the perfect size for albums. You can get approximately 75 albums in a box. And-my boxes are on the floor, so I don’t have to worry about them falling out!!! I learned this next “hack” from a YT channel. I always clean my records before playing them (even if I had just played them the day before). I use a few drops of clear dish washing soap on the soft side of a sponge and warm (never hot) water, and wash them like I was washing a dish. Then I make sure that they’re rinsed off thoroughly with warm not hot water. Then I use one towel to blot off the excess water, and also to dry the label completely so the water doesn’t soak in. I follow with a microfiber cloth, where I push down with some pressure to get into the grooves. I end with a dish towel to finish drying and polishing the record. Then the record is ready to play. This technique only takes a few minutes and only costs pennies, and best of all, it works.

Hi frank, I have used different types of so called cleaning solution in the past year and i found out this is for me the best way to clean my records, without alcohol!! 1 liter of distilled water 10 ml Lixtop kunstoffreiniger ( i know its german so dont know if its even available outside the EU ) And a few drops of either kodak photo flo or other wetting agent The Lixtop is a cleaner for plastics and deep cleans the record and also makes it anti static, so you dont even clean them but also anti static. You dont have to use a lot of it, and i use it in a Disco Antistat and it truly works the same as the disco antistat sollution it comes with. Keep up the great work Frank, and love to see your next episode... keep on spinning!

Frank, for your next AMA video can you talk a little about the dos and don'ts on framing albums. I have a few priceless albums from the 90's that are sealed and I want to frame them without causing them harm. What are your preferred frames? Can you frame gatefold albums? Will it cause ring where, or do you frame just the sleeve?

I only have a $50 diamond stylus (mm cartridge)but I still bought a actual stylus cleaner lol. It was a competitor brand to the onzow. The brand is called "momilla" I think it works great and looks cool next to the turntable. The container is a hexagon shape, the dome above the gel is magnifying glass too. I bought a new blue zero stat 3milty for $80. Some might think it's silly to spend more on the accessories then the stylus and cartridge but I have a 80s Technics slqd33 turntable that only accepts p mount style cartridges so my new options were only limited to what audio Technica has or possibly new old stock "shure" p mount cartridges. My stereo sounds great so I'm happy.

My record cleaning solution I use is distilled water and a few teaspoons of regular ammonia. It's basically what is in Windex minus the other additives for smell. I was told by a local shop owner who is old and has used it all of his years collecting. That was helpful but what really sealed the deal to me was looking up chemistry table information online it shows that ammonia is not reactive in a bad way to PVC polyvinyl chloride (records)

I tried a "generic " version of "blutac"! It covered my stylus in oils from the puddy! I noticed after a couple plays that the fidelity was no way near as good as it usually is! Matter of fact, it was noisier! I had to clean the records I played on it as well! So I went back to what works ( mr clean sponge and a brush combo)! The trick I use with the sponge is, I sink the stylus in, the very very lightly pull forwards little bit then disengage do it again, then use stylis brush just in case I get some fluff from the sponge on it! Works great! Remember CLEAN AFTER EACH SIDE! You will stay in the highest fidelity/ resolution!

For cleaning my records I use in a spray bottle, 75% distilled water and 25% denatured alcohol, which I buy at Lowe's. I lay the record down on a microfiber cloth, spray the record with the solution, then use a 2nd microfiber cloth to wipe down the record gently. I also use the same solution in my D4 Discwasher bottle and I apply a small amount on my Discwasher stylus cleaning brush and my Discwasher record cleaning brush. Sometimes, I also use a product called Novus 1 on some of my records. Claims to clean, shine, and protect plastic/vinyl.

Not sure if it is a hack but I got some 1/4 inch plywood, painted it, and made my own backing for Kallax shelves. This way I can slide the records further back(I like how that looks apposed to them being up front) and it also gives the shelves extra support. It also helps cut down on dust coming in from behind.

I have a tip, mount the end of a cotton swab onto a zip-tie and mount it to the left hand side of the tonearm ensuring that there's light pressure on the records surface, never dust a record again, just keep it clean and it will work miracles. don't worry, it does not damage records in any way. I have pictures and a video of this (and an improved version) on my Instagram account if you decide to use this tip in another video.

Hi Frank, great video as usual, a few comments: if using alcohol, only use isopropyl alcohol not rubbing alcohol, rubbing alcohol has too many impurities. 75% alcohol is toooooo much, I don't use alcohol at all. Alcohol does same thing to water as the wetting agent. Photoflo or similar is better for vinyl, I also put a squirt of tergitol and scent free enviro detergent. works perfect. is very similar to the original discwasher D4+ from the 70's, new D4 is not as good. As for de-warping records, glass or ceramic floor tiles are ok, Perspex (plexiglass as you guys call it) is no good because it is never fully flat, and if it gets too warm it will off-gas and permanently mist the record. sorry for the long response, buti have a 12K+ LP collection on which I have used everything out there to clean with. enjoy the music, keep putting out great vids, take care, lets drive covid away...……..

Many vinyl aficionados are vehemently opposed to using isopropyl alcohol, as it damages vinyl by stiffening it. I stopped using it as an ingredient in my cleaning solution several years ago. I highly recommend the Audio Intelligent cleaning solutions made by Osage Audio Products. They are ideally used in conjunction with a vacuum cleaning system. They are completely alcohol free and use water even more pure than distilled water. Lately I've only been using about a gallon of distilled water with a few drops of wetting agent in a cavitation tank, with a rotation device and electric filtering device and drying fan supplied by Cleaner Vinyl (cleanervinyl.com) to do ultrasonic cleaning. It is time consuming, but not labor intensive. While the total cost of the equipment was around $800, it is significantly less expensive than the roughly $4000 ultrasonic cleaning machines that are sold by high end audio stores.

Yeah I use rubbing alcohol to clean up epoxy when building high power rockets, it’s hard to come by at retail and expensive AF on amazon. Went ahead and bought a gallon to make hand sanitizer and make a few spray bottles to clean tape heads, also needed some to clean up some rotted out belts on my favorite tape deck... 50 bucks I’m doing to make this gallon last.

DO NOT USE MAGIC ERASER unless you want an excuse to buy a new cartridge. From the site: (product contains alcohol ethoxylates) - do not induce vomiting . Test a small area with light pressure before use. Not recommended for the following surfaces: high gloss, polished, dark, brushed, satin, faux, bare/polished wood, copper, stainless steel, non-stick coating, or vehicle body. Rinse required for surfaces in direct contact with food. Do not use with chlorine bleach or other household cleaners. Do you really want to put caustic substances on your stylus? These are not merely pieces of foam. They have destroyed many cartridges. Use something designed for the purpose.

Oooh, I have a good one (raising my hand!): If you have an LP that is slightly domed when you put it on the platter, use a small binder clip. This would be for the side of the record that is domed upwards. Put It on the (non-spinning) platter, press down slightly on the label with one hand (making sure you stay clear of the spindle) until the record is flat from center to edge. With the other hand, affix the binder clip sideways to the spindle to keep the record flat. It's spring loaded so it'll stay put. It literally does the same thing as one of those expensive record clamps and is fully adjustable, depending on how high or low you put it on the spindle. You probably won't need it for the other side of the record, by the way. And this hack won't do much for a warped record either. But it will improve tracking on the domed side as the arm no longer has to "climb the mountain" as it were. You may end up with a million binder clips as that's the only way they seem to sell them, but they're cheap. And if you use the smallest size, there's no chance of interference with the tone arm at all. The Blue tac de-couples your speaker from the surface that it sits on. Therefore energy and vibration from the speaker doesn't go where it would muddy up the sound.

I just use a stylus brush to clean my stylus. Usually just a quick brush after each LP. I don't seem to have any problems. For my cube shelves I actually cut a sheet of fiberboard to fit and screwed it on the back to completely enclose it. I got some clear laminate cut for the door on the front and just screwed a couple of hinges on.

A stylus brush or the ZeroDust have been my go-to's for many years. Lately, I have also started with the MoonGel technique. But it's interesting to hear about the little tricks and tips others have. Thanks for tuning in! Frank

@@Channel33RPM totally true! I know a couple of guys that use the Onzow. I forgot to add that I tried the panes of glass in the sun technique to flatten a badly warped record, and although it flattened the record absolutely perfectly, it also oblongated it and was sadly still unplayable. I was a bit bummed as it was my stepdads Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers LP I got off him just before he passed away. It was a super bad warp though, so it was do or die anyway. I find most minor warps go away over time with the record stacked inbetween other records in the shelf. Phew. Long-winded!👍

So many hacks so little time, it's starting to become exhausting. Here's a way cleaning your style Frank keep your records clean I clean my stylus maybe every four or five plays as long as my records to clean the stylus stays clean as for solution 80% distilled water 20% alcohol and a half of drop of clear Dawn detergent I did that to a 20-ounce bottle and that was five years ago and still using the same 20 oz bottle and have not refilled it yet it's about three-quarters done😀😀😀😀 still using the spin clean with distilled water and just a little alcohol a few drops it works great but I only clean around 10 records before I change it!!!! it can get pretty dirty in there. Of course if you have the money go out and buy one of those nice record cleaning machines I'm sure they're well worth it😀✌

As a beginner, it can be overwhelming. I started to collect records before I got the gear to actually listen to it like its intended( a turntable with built in speakers) currently looking into what kind of cheap gear I can have.

For warped records I'm very worried about adding any heat source. Unless of course it's so badly warped, why not. I get two large coffee table books that are at least the same size if not bigger than the record and place them in between for a long period of time. Usually a month at least. I'm a patient guy.

Have used this method multiple times but without protective sleeves, just glass plates. Sleeves may leave marks in the softened vinyl. Also never used sunlight as it's impossible to cotrol the heat exposure properly. I put the record in the oven (hot air only!!) and use an external sensor thermometer to ensue the temperature won't go above 60°C (= 140 °F). Keeping the heat for 15-30 minutes, then let it cool down slowly. Oft then glass plate weight (ca. 1kg) is sufficient, sometimes an additional 3-5kg may help. Have used this method also with an early shellac record from 1897 at about 65°C (150 °F) - (no extra weight on those or they may crack!). The rule of thumb to be patient not rush anything. If uncertain, test your method with a record you don't care about.

I used two cutting boards from the kitchen and put it in the oven at around 175 F and started at 20 minutes and checked it after it cooled down if it was still warped I did it again and kept it in longer until the record was warped free . I was able to repair a warped CSNY Deja Vu album with this method , Check you tube videos for the oven temp. that they used just in case the temp. that I mentioned is a little off since I did this last year.

Problem with alcohol is it dries very quickly...so if you like to let records soak for a few minutes to break loose any possible dust/dirt/etc then alcohol won't work...

I like this channel and the input from viewers is great. Still , the blue tack or magic eraser stuff sounds harmful because they leave residue. I use only isopropyl 20% + wetting agent with microfiber cloth for records and official audiotechnica solution for stylus. I think that is closest in ”do no harm” approach.

Never noticed a normal magic eraser leaving any residue. I always lower the stylus on to the magic eraser and after that swipe it with a stylus brush and never have i spotted any residue.

Dude, I need your help!!!! My huge record collection was stolen from me several years ago. I am slowly rebuilding, but I am disabled and on a fixed income, so it's a slow process. I recently broke down and ordered online from Walmart :/ I got Aerosmith - Get Your Wings and Toys In The Attic. To my delight, they were the 2014 RSD issues, mastered from the original vault tapes on 180 gram black vinyl. They sound amazing, and under 20 bucks each!!! I put their debut album and Rocks in my cart for a later purchase. Anyway, I want to replace Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and you are my only source to find the best pressing. The most bang for my buck is best, but I'd wait longer for a purchase recommended by you. You are why I am waiting for the double lp 45rpm pressing of Rumours. I'd be happier if it had Silver Springs on it, one of my 2 favorite Stevie Nicks songs :) I think that they have (or already have) released Tusk in the same format, and Beautiful Child is my second favorite Nicks song. They both deserve excellent treatment for vinyl. I am self quarantined, and your videos have been very entertaining, and informative. Thanks for being you! Rick

The Moon gel is NON-Toxic, and i don't think the "children hands" is all that free for toxic? I use the Moon gel with good results, and also the magic eraser (or similar), as it's a kind of microfiber sponge, and works as well. But be VERY carefully when using the magic eraser, and do only pull "back to front", if not using the leveler? I saw a picture of a very dirty stylus, being cleaned with the magic eraser, and the "before/after" picture was astonishing, so it works 4 sure. Cheers from Denmark
