Sign-off sequence from CBC station "CBC British Columbia" CBUT in Vancouver, British Columbia, recorded in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 28, 1979.
Includes a lengthy readout of CBUT's repeaters throughout western Canada, followed by renditions of "O, Canada" and "God Save the Queen." The music heard under the voiceover is "Someone to Watch Over Me" by André Kostelanetz.
Until 1981, the Victoria portion of the market was served by independent CBC affiliate CHEK.

Re: God Save the Queen used on Canadian TV sign offs: That practice ceased after July 1, 1980, when O Canada became the only official anthem of Canada.

Many Canadian stations were still playing GSTQ at sign-off well into the '80s. CFTO in Toronto was playing it as late as 1992.

Some stations only played O Canada, even before that became the only official national anthem of Canada. That includes CHCH Hamilton and even American stations like WIVB Buffalo.

I used to work there about that time. There was an 11pm newscast, live, in a tiny studio with one small desk, a couple of lighting fixtures and a microphone and camera. As the 'new guy' technician, it was my job, frequently, to arrive about 10:30pm, check the lights were on, the camera pointed at the desk and flip the switch, sit down, wait to the end of the newscast, say goodnight to the announcer, turn everything off, and leave!

@@ChristopherSobieniak Thata was almost 50 years ago. Times have changed somewhat since then. Brand new studios, for one! CBUT Channel 2 is CBC's Western Regional Production Center. Even before the new studios were built, CBUT produced dozens of programs, variety shows, dramas, cooking shows, news magazines and covered almost all sports events in the region.

This is great. Totally what I remember. I came here to show my 14 yr old son, who of course has never seen tv that signs off at the end of the day. In 1979 I was 15. Saw this nightly. Thanks for putting it up! PS, we didn't have the BC part as we were in Saskatchewan.

Love this find! I've never seen what they've used before O Canada became the National Anthem and before the "With Glowing Hearts" film was used almost everywhere, so this is nice!

It's interesting that they were the source of CBC in Uranium City at the time. Eventually Uranium City would be served by CBC North, which was replaced in 2003 by programming from CBKST in Saskatoon. CBKAT, which had a power of 15 watts, was shut down in 2012 when the CBC shut down its various analog repeaters due to budget cuts and the switchover to digital. I wonder how many people, especially 12 year old boys, have called this station See-Butt over the years.

Beautiful to see! I had not seen this particular anthem film before. In the early 80s CBUT had a more graphics-driven display of the repeaters throughout BC versus the recital here. What preceded the sign-off?

CBC Quebec was similar, both English and French. Not sure if satellites have replaced these re-broadcast transmitters. 😀

They pretty much had. Normally these cable/satellite providers would use the feed for the station serving that province. Only the main transmitters used for cities like Montreal are still operational.

My dad actually worked there around this time as a technician - also they mentioned that there's a translator on Mt. Baker? In Washington State? When I lived in Seattle about 10 years ago we used to watch CBUT there.
