I am enjoying the series however as someone who was in the middle of helping to organise both the initial response to section 28 and helped organised direct actions around hiv/aids we organised the first march against section 28 and we hired a train to to take people up to Manchester to take part in a demo

Section 28 only ended in 2003, it was 2 months after I went to university. People think this is an olden times problem, something historical. It isn't. There's still discrimination today and we have a long way to go before the lgbtq+ community thrives.

Gosh the frustration at that period. I couldn't make it. That protest scene was so refreshing and uplifting and moving! When Richie tells everyone he has HIV, uhhh! It gave me hope in his last line because nobody was shown dying. I honestly cried at Richie's headlight dance. Such a sad and beautiful moment.

I personally can relate on how the show portrayed of Roscoe and Arthur is spot on, especially when Arthur and his peers dining around the table with their boys looking at each other perplexed and somehow amused. There are lots of misunderstanding towards May/December relationship to be honest.

I'm very sorry if the presenter has some condition making her voice sound that way, I could even ignore the usual inanities from such 'youth' presenters, but for me the sound of her voice has ruined the after show. I just can't watch it with her squealing constantly which is a terrible shame, especially as Stephen Fry was in this one.

This episode semed to move at a really fast pace,that refelecte the pace of change that was happening at the time.I was part of 'Act Up' and "Outrage" for a time and they did gate crash funerals like that,it was difficult sometimes it was the right thing to do and others it wasn't.But it showed the erase culture that begun as the virus took hold. The government did refuse to fund Aids/H.I.V research at first and also tried to stop funding for AZT and then tried to stop AZT being released as a treartment,it shoudn't be under estimated how powerul the effects of Clause 28 was at this time,WH Smith began to sell Gay Times,Attitude etc in brown paper wrappers or they were under the counter and had to be asked for. L.G.B.T.Q+ teachers were fired from their jobs,as were gay men in other public jobs it lead to a real witch hunt of L.G.B.T.Q+ men at the time,but Clause 28 made it difficult for Aids/H.IV charities to have a public voice and to put the information ot there, which is why "Act Up" and others were started.The Mp brilliantly layedby Stephen Fry, had echoes of creepy Mr Hart,in the way he exploited Roescoe, but Roscoe also exploited him to, but it went on, It's never said but it was obvious Roescoe was earning a living as an escourt, which at the time was something a lt of L.G.B.T.Q men did, you would see their ads in the back of all the magazines.I love how Jill says they are protesting for Colin and that Colins mum was at the protest too.I think Richie has a kind of awakening in this episode a real awakening,but done in a really quiet human way on the beach with his former schol friend. He did 'go home' as his agent said, but when he then goes to the protest he 'goes home' again to support his friends and tells them he has Aids,so a sort of second coming out for him that was brilliantly done.The fact Jills mum in this episode is actually the real life Jill is also a great piece of casting to,it grounded the episode really well.The drug companies in the early days did exploit the situation for finacial gain, AZT was made so expensive at first that it was difficult to get it for treatment, but this happened again later when combination therapy came into being.the protests that happened at the time did work they did lead to things being changed and thankfully clause 28 was repealed,and also later the age of gay consent was changed.The police turning up and donning ruber gloves and using excessive violence did happen,they were actually trained by the millitary funded by the government,to deal with protests in that way,many L.G.B.T.Q+ men died in custody at the time but this was swept under the carpet.The sad thing was the long term partners of gay men who died had no legal rights at all,and they were shunned by the families etc,I don't know if this has totally changed even now. Clause 28 was almost the original form of cancel/erase culture perpetuated by the government and the press that is so prevelant now.But this episode also shows how things did begin to change and in time the government had to admitt it had blood on it's hands and were held accoutable for their actions in relation to the "Aids Crisis" as it was called at the tim,there were even calls for Thatcher to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity,but this never happened.But also at the time of this episode it was realised it wasn't just a L.G.B.T.Q+ disease,that it began to affect other parts of the population,like drug addicts who shared needles who assed on the infection in doing so, so safe needle exchanges came into being. Things like out reach workers going out at night to known L.G.B.T.Q+ cruising areas to give out condoms and lube. When things began to change it gathered momentum really qiuckly and this epiosode shows the beginning of that, the calm before the storm so to speak.For me this was the personally most poweful episode and very very close to the bone for me.I am glad I wad around at the time and was a very small part in leading the change that happened in how Aids/H.I.V was addressed,but it also really reminded me too of all the people I lost at the time, the amount of funerals I went to. I was a "buddy" for quite a few years and am so happy that I had the chance to do that because some of the guys I cared for I was literally all the contact and suppotrt they had,and they became my surrogate family they really did and I'm so glad I knew them all and I learnt so much from them too.I'm so gald Russel.T.Davies has created this fantastic series, it's L.G.B.T.Q+ history month so the series has a deeper resonnance because of this.We need to reclaim this part of our history and i sense he felt the same as he wrote his.

I'm afraid Kemah's voice causes the same discomfort to me that Sarah Millcan's does. These women are being themselves and I wouldn't want to ask them to change. But I can't change the fact that the tone or pitch of their voices gives me physical aural discomfort. So it was very hard to watch and I had to mute and use subtitles in the end.

Funnily enough it was the same with Margaret Thatcher. Her advisors thought that she sounded too strident & advised her to lower the pitch of her voice. She did this to such an extent that the person who later voiced her character in Spitting Image was a man!

It is not needless, it is true! She doesn't have a pleasant voice, which is a fundamental quality for presenters. Many people DID find her voice annoying! Sure she can do brilliantly in other professions that doesn't need a pleasant voice. I cannot sing so i don't aim for becoming a singer. If i do become. A singer, people have the right not to come to my concert, even if i sing in the street, I may receive some unwelcoming reaction from public. If i am not able to see, becoming a nature guid may not be the best choice of profession for me. difficult to get this point?!

Now my question is would you accept same performance for a non lgbt show as well or you are accepting her unusual (to be honest unpleasant ) voice suitable for lgbt contexts? I think perhaps you are stereotyping lgbt and putting it in a certain context however in my view lgbt deserves a clear and pleasant voice to pass the message to all people in the society, not in a voice that many find it annoying and turn of the channel, or tolerate it just beecause they force themselves to be accepting her. I didn't find unfair comments to her as far as i read them, she is a big girl and she should be able to take critisim about her job, she is reciving these comment probably because she is on the wrong job, not because people are mean to her. Channel 4 has recruitment team and they monitor the audience views to make surs they hired right people, in this case they didn't do a good job and i am sure they will respect the opinion of their viewers more in the future. 2. I think another reason this series has so much resonnance is that this February is L.G.B.T.Q+ history month,and there is a sense of reclaiming our history in the light of the effort to cancel/erase it that seems to be going on in the world.The theme of the L.G.B.T.Q+ history month is Mind Body and spirit and has a focus on mental health and our well being.But knowing what this month is gave a liitle more gravitas to this episode and to the series so far.

I have no idea what to say when I say Stephen Fry in a show revolving around the life of some persons going through hard times for what they believe to be the living styles, at extreme odd with norms, along with a curse - AIDS - only being associates with a particular kind of group whose sexual orientation is at the opposite of what normalcy preaches at a particular time - years back. I am not sure as I could be mistaken that SF, if agreed to be on the board, then the show is worth watching. He is a man of letters, witty, smart, and to-the-point sort of deity who is quite at best what to say, who to say, when to say, and why to say. I wonder if the host has some kind of sickness in speaking as she sounds weirdly slow-paced.
