Am I the only one who is bothered over the fact that we *do* know what Stonehenge is? It's an ancient observatory. During the summer and winter solstice at sunrise and sunset, the sun aligns perfectly in the created spaces between stones. Stonehenge is designed to chart the movement of the sun at certain points in the year.

Also goes back to Neolithic times when people were buried. The stones are alleged to come from Wales, which must have been quite a feat.

But there is more to it than that. Sure, it is a solar calendar. But those are much easier to do in small scale. So, what was Stonehenge other than that?

As I understand it, that's the best explanation given, and the data match this pretty well, but it's a prehistoric monument whose builders lived and died before anyone on the isles ever even thought of writing. Nobody knows what these people called themselves, even though we can learn a lot from what archaeologists have found. Nobody knows why they were built, even though we can learn a lot from what other experts have determined was likely and probable. I'm sad that she didn't talk about what was theorized about Stonehenge, but she actually isn't wrong. Nobody KNOWS what it is, but we have some very solid ideas.

@@Anonie324 Yeah, I suppose it goes back to the main point of everything gets forgotten eventually, until all we're left with are the monuments of an unknowable people with only a vague sense of historical patriotic pride we call heritage linking us. At the end of the day, it's okay not to know all the answers.
