I hate these kind of interviews. Jon Snow has his own idea of what video games are and instead of honestly listening to the "expert" (more of an expert than Jon Snow is anyway), he criticizes every point and doesn't try to understand. He thinks the opening cutscene to Lego Marvel Super Heroes was violent where someone was cut into pieces. If he had so much as watched it, he would have seen that it was part of the ship that was blasted off. It's one thing to not understand and be able to immediately grasp the game right away, but it's another to just stick to your assumptions and ignore concrete fact unfolding in front of you. Not that I really care to be honest. Jon Snow and people like him will soon be gone, to put it plainly. And of course, when the next generation comes along with their technology that we can't grasp, I hope we'll be a little more considerate. I'm sure the things Jon Snow enjoyed as a child and young adult were seen as unnecessary or such by his parents.

Lexi Kamen Thomas Yet when he's in a similar position with people from the film industry, he goes along with most of mainstream media as treating them like royalty and feels an obligation to know everything he can about the person in question. I'm strangely happy to know that Brooker likes video games, but I hold no ill will for Jon Snow for not getting it. It's a new medium from his perspective and it's not neccessary to follow it. There's lots of great ways to be entertained and being aware of the video game industry or interested in it does not make you a better person. He's also on point for talking about violence and testosterone overload in games. It's something worth discussing even if I don't take his side.

Jon Snow has a whole team gathering information for him. It's not about "not getting it". It's about TV media hating computer games as a rival it cannot defeat.
@chebob200910 жыл бұрын
Iain Clark Thats a pretty wild claim. I doubt TV considers video games a rival any more than it considers books and sports a rival. Jon is just coming to video games with the same attitude as nearly everyone his age does. Everyone in my family over the age of 50 has this exact same attitude. They just don't get it, it's completely opaque to them and they only see the surface level to any game.
@iainclark869510 жыл бұрын
chebob2009 My granny loves wii sport. My mum plays candy crush every day. My dad is addicted to tetris and minesweeper. All are over 50. Of course TV doesn't mind books and sports. But computer games are a direct cause of reduced viewership and subsequently reduced revenue. Look at the figures and you'll see my claim is not wild at all. TV has smeared computer games since the days of Sinclair Spectrums. Charlie Brooker himself has been very outspoken about this fact. Go look it up.
@chebob200910 жыл бұрын
Oh I'm not saying the older generation won't enjoy games. But I'd maintain that they only see them in a very superficial light. The 3 examples you gave certainly support that I'd say. To be honest, if Charlie were to introduce a man who's never played any video games yet criticises, he would have chosen a better selection of games to give to Snow. Most experiences are built around first impressions, and I don't think that COD Ghosts, a linear piece of shit parody of itself, and LEGO Marvel, in which the first level is slick with invisible walls, would have been a good choice to give to someone like Snow as first impressions to what video games are like. He should have chosen a better selection of games (or brought in another console) to make Jon Snow change his tune: BioShock, Metal Gear Solid, the Half-Life/Portal games, Super Mario World, Morrowind... What.

Why? This was so hilarious I was literally choking with laughter. I think that people of a certain age just don't "get" computer games on a cognitive level. Their cognitive skills were developed at a time when the world was much more mechanical, and they have difficulty mapping mechanical controls to their digital counterparts. I guarantee that you drove a car in a computer game before you drove a real car. The idea of a car's steering, the firing of a gun or the movement of a person being controlled by pressing a button is not an alien concept to you. But to them, it is like trying to drive a car with helicopter controls. Look at this way. By the 2050s, we're very likely to have robots playing soccer, and the ability to compete with them using real-life robotic avatars. How well do you think you'll cope if some teenager asks you to join him on his avatar team against the soccer robots?
