During the transition period, the UK is actually less sovereign due to the points I mentioned above. The irony is not lost on me.

I can explain as a British expat living in France in favour of Brexit. Because when you vote in something you don't necessarily vote in terms of what directly affects you and yours. You are allowed to vote in what you think is in the best interests of the whole country and the people living there. As a Brit living in France who speaks fluent French I am in favour of Brexit because I don't believe in endless European regulations and bureaucracy and tax on business. I want lower taxes and people to be able to keep more of the money they earn. And I also want the UK to compete in the global race instead of thinking Brussels will get the UK the best outcomes. There's no point in electing a houses of Parliament in the UK and a European Parliament.

As I understand it, if they legally registered as residents in Spain as legally required, when they moved there (this is pre Brexit), they would lose some of their benefits back in the UK, tho I dunno if heating allowance was among them. There were about 300,000 Brits registered as living in Spain, but Brexit showed, that it was actually over 1 million, coz lots of Brits were living in Spain without registering, so they A. could keep all their benefits back in the UK, and B. avoid paying any taxes or other contributions in Spain instead living as if just tourists. Both imo is fraud. But those ppl are now in trouble, coz after Brexit they now have to leave Spain, get deported or get legal residency status. And since they didnt live there legally previously, the requirements are those for all 3rd country citizens rather than the much easier process for those already registered residents pre Brexit. Anyway, my interpretation is, that some of these ppl probably got benefits from the UK, they shouldnt have, coz they were still living in the UK on paper. Also, why most of them could vote, when many Brits legally living and working in various EU countries were denied a vote by their own government, when they were the 1s most affected by the outcome. As for healthcare, many countries have reciprocal agreements, that doesnt have anything to do with the EU apart from EU countries having an agreement internally. I can go to doctor/hospital anywhere in the EU, but my country also have agreements with many other countries around the world, tho its usually for up to a set amount. Just like the UK only paid up to a set amount for these Brits living in Spain, the rest was on the Spanish taxpayers as per the internal EU agreement. The problem for the British citizens in Spain is again, that their government left the EU and hence the internal EU agreement, but they failed to get a new reciprocal agreement with Spain - and probably other EU countries as well. In fact, they told those Brits to get a private health insurance, so it doesnt look like, the UK government has any intention of getting an agreement. After all, they have it sorted in the UK, where all EU citizens living and working there not only pay the same share of taxes to the NHS, but are also required to pay a substantial additional fee for NHS access. Which only makes the Brexiter claims about "healthcare tourism" and "free healthcare for EU citizens" even more idiotic.

There are two kinds of British in Spain. Some do their best with basic Spanish, and assimilate well -- the Spanish really appreciate that effort. Some expect the Spanish to learn English -- they would not be missed. You can divide them another way, some live inland and build a sustainable life. Some live on the coast, eat fish and chips and shop in English themed supermarkets. Their businesses might suffer --- it´s an ill wind. If you can see the bigger picture, it looks like cities no longer make any sense.

Yeah, some didnt think, it was necessary, coz "they need our money". Some did, but didnt meet the requirements for residency status. A lot lived there under the radar, meaning that for every Brit who was legally registered as living in Spain pre-Brexit, it turned out, there were 2-3 others living there without the required registretion, coz they A. didnt want to give up any benefits back in the UK, and B. thought, they were clever to avoid any Spanish taxes or any other contributions to the country, they were living in. With the result, that now they either have to leave, get deported or get legal residency, which is really hard, when they werent living there legally b4, so instead of the easy and quick residency for most of those officially living in Spain pre-Brexit, who applied b4 the deadline, these "clever" cheaters now have to fulfill all the requirements for residency for 3rd country citizens, and most of them are failing. But considering, that they were actually committing fraud in both Spain and the UK previously, they get no sympathy from me.

Omar X - It isn’t movement that is the issue, it is permanent residence status. For Americans, for example, traveling to the EU (or anywhere) for a visit is not a problem. An extended stay requires permission. Some Americans manage to retire abroad, but not necessarily anywhere.

Hopefully they will still be able to work and study abroad without great difficulty though it might get a little more tiresome to get visas and permits in countries that don't have the residence system (Portugal does - British citizens in Portugal just need to apply with local authorities (camera municipal) and their rights will remain the same). New entrants might have more trouble in some things, but granted the UK has a system in place that makes it accessible EU member citizens to enter the UK I think Brits won't have much problem in return.
