I don't know who teaches the football drill now but I can tell you it leaves a lot to be desired. It's certainly not up to scratch.

I actually enjoyed drill, loved it to be honest. Most hated and dreaded it and the parades.

It would be interesting to know the origin of how their peaked cap visors came to slant near vertically downwards and why the chinstrap of the bearskin is worn in front of the jaw and not under it. Both of these features seem impractical. Were they always worn that way or have they resulted from gradual fashion modifications over time?
@MyScubasteve
@MyScubasteve 2 жыл бұрын
Apparently it was in front of the jaw because its weight in battle could cause damage to their jaw if hit or something like that. I have since found out it could be used to strangle you.

The chinstrap was never worn under the chin, it was to provide some protection for the face from saber strikes of cavalry.

Peak cap is to keep the sun out of there eyes as they have to stand on parade for long periods of time and the curb chain it worn on the chin because when the bearskin was worn to battle if it got taken of by a spear it would break there neck and it also used to act as protection to the face
@alvindurochermtl

The caps are designed that way so you need to stand straight and keep your chin lifted in order for you to be able to see anything while on parade

Guards depot 79when i was in most irish guards from liverpool area,or ireland,coldstream mostly north west and scots scotland,and grenadiers mostly south east and manchester,and welsh ,mostly welsh,nowadays you seem to get people that have real no link at all to certain regiments in any way or form

Why do the Queens guards wear bearskin hats? ....Answer: The origins are that every gunner in the British military and the French military wore bearskin caps to make them taller and more intimidating because they were the ones that did the hand to hand fighting. In Napoleon's imperial guard everybody wore them, and they were supposed to be his elite troops... Bear pelts that are used are the by-products of a licensed cull by the Canadian authorities to manage the wild bear population... The bearskin hats cost $1,218, and can last 20 to 40 years through wind, rain and sun exposure. The army said bears are not killed expressly for their fur. Each year the army's hat manufacturer buys roughly 100 pelts from an annual cull of tens of thousands of Canadian bears

The Bearskin cap is a battle honour of the GRENADFIERS,for defeating the French at Waterloo,the others in the Household Div wear theirs for uniformaty,or so I had drilled into my head at the ONLY DEPOT CATERHAM 1954

Out of date information, bearskins are not procured anymore, haven't been in years, they're fake fur......All proper bearskins are being phased out and are not being surplused, they are destroyed.

The bearskin cap was taken by the British Grenadiers from the French Grenadiers at the battle of Waterloo. They took it and wear it as a battle honour.
