Well said, although I think those serving would ask for an understanding and appreciation of what they do, more than respect. It's disrespect from civilians that is worrying, but perhaps the armed forces need to explain their role better? Irresponsible politicians also need to be held accountable for abusing their use of the military. Think of them as the 4th emergency service.

So different than the US military style-these folks are quiet and aren’t yelling at all. They even compliment a job well done, whereas the US military would say that no matter what you do, it will never be good enough.
@1chishАй бұрын
If you can pass the tests, move along the phases and hardened NCOs say you are good enough then you are good enough to be an Officer in the british Army. Its THAT simple. I doubt anyone even thought of arguing with Colour Sergeant Roshan Gurung. I mean you just don't ...
@A.MardleАй бұрын
It would be nice if it worked like that in real life. The tests have been fudged and a blind eye turned to weaknesses since the early 90s. Training staff are under massive pressure to get people through the system and there is a huge amount of dishonesty involved.
@Dd-fb2tjАй бұрын
It's quite literally NOT that simple. RAF famously broke the law stopping white men from getting pilot training. It's a diversity drive at the expense of expertise.....do your research

@@1chish Not at all. I knew enough of them personally to have an informed opinion. That said, the real rot is higher up the food chain. The training establishments have been sending substandard people to working units for a long time. Good to see 8 magazines as part of an officer cadet's standard kit. Australian soldiers went to Vietnam with just 3 magazines for their SLR's [The Belgian-designed FAL-FN 7.62mm self-loading rifle]. Generals and politicians can be pretty stupid. A weapon without ammo is basically a stick. That is why they are fitted with bayonets, so they KNOW that soldiers will run out of ammo. Even with excellent logistics. Having a billion rounds in a depot somewhere is no consolation to a squaddie in a fire-fight that has no rounds left. So fire discipline is key. Suppressive fire is the job of the SAW [machine gun], which can lay down a cone of fire to keep enemy heads down. A soldier with a fully automatic assault rifle is just going to kill bushes and clouds.
@MagpieOz2 күн бұрын
we may have had 4 magazines but we also carried another 200 rounds or so in our packs.
@roberthunter69272 күн бұрын
@@MagpieOz According to Major Smith, up to the Long Tan battle, his SLR-carrying troops had only 3 mags [60 rounds] , plus 50 or 60 loose rounds. Individuals, especially officers and NCO' s might have carried more. Several accounts relate of CSM Kirby asking FOO Captain Stanley if he had any rounds in his pack that he could spare, which I believe was 5.56mm NATO suitable for the M-16 he was carrying [maybe he had some 7.62 rounds, but it was not specifically mentioned] . It appears AFTER Long Tan, more magazines were acquired and issues, and some magazines were pre-loaded in prep for the rapid use when re-supplying troops in battle. Of course these were official loads, and no doubt, whenever the opportunity arose, soldiers would find or acquire extra equipment via informal channels if the head-shed was not generous enough for their needs. The expectation was that the bulk of operations would be patrolling, COIN ops etc, not pitched battles. And Commonwealth troops are more orientated to fire discipline than US units, that love their "rock and roll" "mad minutes" and the like], but in patrolling in hot, humid conditions, jungle, rice paddies, elephant grass, critters etc, carrying a lot of ammo would get old very quickly. The only ammo carried in the hundreds of rounds were the belts of 7.62 for the M-60's, carried by gun groups, with bandolier or two for the riflemen as reserve belts for the "pigs" The lack of foresight by Brigadier Jackson and battalion commanders was quite concerning, since they should have had assets like helo's, APC's or whatever on-hand for rapid re-supply at all times. Even the 1st British airbourne division at Arnhem in 1944 used jeeps to re-supply advancing units with ammo. And many got through, especially earlier in the battle. How hard would it be to throw some boxes of ammo, grenades etc into a couple of jeeps with a 50-cals mounted, and go most of the way towards the engaged unit? Instead it was hours before the helos and then APC's re-supplied, and reinforced Smith's unit. I can understand Jackson holding onto his few APC's [with their mounted weapons], because an attack on NuiDat was very plausible, but a few men in jeeps and ammo would not have compromised the defense of the base significantly, but would have benefited Delta company greatly, at the maximum cost of a few men and a couple of vehicles. [Or maybe a brigade or battalion commander with some guts, and loyalty to their charges]. That is why armies have ranks. Jackson had a 2IC, and so did so did Lt Col. Townsend [OC, 6th Bn]. If the boss falls, the 2-IC [or the XO in the case of Americans] takes over. While it is true that Jackson was under-resourced by the head-shed in Australia for the mission, he seems to have dithered a lot, which in battle costs time and lives, so almost any decision would have been better then none. Jackson had several viable options. The first was to pull the chain, and get everything he could lay his hands on, the second was to put all of the resources into base defense, and write-off Delta, or weaken the base with an immediate counter-attack to relieve Smiths' unit, or do something like sending a couple of jeeps of ammo to Bravo company, and they could go at get the ammo to Smith. or some logical combination of those. But he dithered, for hours. He even refused Smith the full regiment fire missions at first, citing the need to also support 5 BN [which had not requested any fire missions].

Yes, when I was in phrase 1 training we were told by our Sargent Major if it's shiney and it's not shining then you have failed to clean it. Anything from letter boxes, door handles, hinges etc must be spotless. I remember we failed a block inspection because something that was meant to be shiney wasn't shiney the lads responsible for it were made to clean everything shiney in our block as punishment we weren't allowed to help them but the minute or corporals left we all mucked in and helped them. Next day we found out it was a test to see if we would help these lads clean or jack on them and sit and watch and let them do it all. Basic training is a psychology test they mess with your head and your emotions.

@Orbital_InclinationАй бұрын
We can't recruit enough people in as it stands, regardless of their quality. The armed forces literally need to take anyone who passes the standard because there are so many gaps. The wider a pool we recruit from, the better candidates we attract. That's not the fault of any one individual signing up, regardless of gender, and fair play to them for volunteering instead of moaning on KZbin.

@@Orbital_Inclination So just meat for the grinder then? Doesnt matter the quality its bodies that matter? Perhaps if the forces focused more on attracting the right people rather than focusing on diversity. But thats assuming that I accept your argument in the first place which I dont, look at the RAF, they are holding back white men in order to fill the ranks with wahmen and non whites. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to disbelieve that this is a constant across all the forces.

Room inspections. One of the most pointless aspects of military training. Existing army officers and NCOs will say it is essential but in reality it is done only because it has always been done and the army is incapable of thinking outside the box. Of course the taxpayer pays for this waste of time and effort. No wonder the top brass are always complaining that they don't have enough money for military hardware. And don't even get me started on the cost of ceremonial uniforms. The Royal Navy could buy a couple of Type 26 frigates for the price of all the ceremonial uniforms.
