One fantastic detail about that ending narration is the fact that it’s one of the only instances where it doesn’t end with “…in the Twilight Zone.” And that’s because the evil he’s talking about isn’t exclusive to the Twilight Zone, it exists right here with us in the real world.

There is a German Book which also got a movie adaptation called "Er ist wieder da" (Look who's back) where Adolf Hitler wakes up in modern day Germany and people think he is an impersonator. The story has a very depressing and fatalst ending as this "Hitler impersonator" gets popular and is on his way to regain power concluding that while the world has changed, human nature has not, and he can still work with that.

@@SuperOmnicronsj44 I'll meet you halfway and say that yes. Media can be extremely divisive. Weather that be MSNBC, CNN, and FOX news respectably. The way they vilify the opposing side is in itself extremely one sided and play to their own viewership's fears and doubts. Allowing them to hate those who don't share their viewpoints. That said, Trump defiantly has a role to play in that and was incredibly bigoted in his views.

Great episode to highlight, and great commentary. However, you did skip what I think is the best pair of lines in the episode. When Peter runs back to Hitler he says, "You chose me." And Hitler responds, "No! You chose me." God, that's powerful! It's a statement about taking personal responsibility for your own hatred. He then goes on to say he stole his words and used it to justify himself. I don't remember the exact words, but I just happened to see this episode yesterday by pure coincidence, so I remember the gist.

There's one part of the episode that I think deserves more mention. Convince people that they are victims, and it's so much easier to turn them into the oppressors. This is why you should always be suspicious of anyone claiming to stand up for victims. Not to always disbelieve them, mind, but be wary. Because for every one who genuinely wishes to help the downtrodden, there is another who's a demogauge intending to use their suffering for personal power.

However, the first time I saw this episode was as a middle schooler, when one of my teachers decided to show the class a few classic Twilight Zone episodes (I remember "The Rip Van Winkle Caper" and "The Masks" being shown to us, along with this one). And let me tell you, back then, the twist scared the crap out of me, and Serling's narration at the end _still_ does. Personally, I think any of our opinions on media is subject to change overtime. Shows that we liked years ago may not be as "epic" when we watch them again after our interests may have shifted due to new experiences. I had a friend whose favorite movie was Space Jam when he was a kid. He didn't want to watch it again as an adult. When I asked him "why?", he was afraid that he'd hate it. As we get older, it's harder to be excited or enjoy moments in movies when we've gone through experiences or learned more about life. What we may have thought was "funny" on the first watch may shift to "ridiculous" or even "idiotic" on a 2nd viewing.

Honestly my only real problem with this episode is that making it all about Nazism just feels... a little SIMPLE, I guess. The message, at least the one I THINK it was trying to convey, is that evil will never truly die, and that it must constantly be fought against by everyone willing to do so. That even though WW2 is over and Hitler is dead, he still technically lives on in the hatred that others continue to spread. The problem I have is, making it just a neo-Nazi group kinda waters that point down, and the message basically becomes 'Nazis are bad' instead, and I think the deeper point of the story is lost on a lot of people who just see it as a cautionary tale about this one specific TYPE of evil, rather than the greater concept of evil itself. I think the episode could've worked better if it leaned into that angle more, like at the end when Hitler is revealed, it would've worked better if he then morphed into other people, like Mussolini, Genghis Khan, etc... various other 'evil' figures from history, getting the point across that it's not literally Hitler, more that Hitler was just one of the many faces worn by this endless evil. Or hell, if Volmer's group specifically wasn't just neo-Nazis, but were something entirely unrelated who simply MIRRORED Nazism in their actions, uniforms, ideals, etc... effectively being Nazis in everything but name. Hell even Rod's closing narration, for as good as it is, insists on referring to Hitler specifically, repeating the episode title of 'HE'S alive', hammering in that it's less about evil as a whole concept and more about Hitler and the Nazis. Still a good episode but I think it could've been a lot better honestly.

True. It’s certainly backfiring today. Since that “associating those who didn’t like the product with Nazis” has become a rather major issue now that almost every company in the west is constantly claiming that anyone who remotely criticizes them, or even just doesn’t give them money, is secretly some bigot for not worshipping them. Now they continuously shove out crap products and use political correctness as an excuse to ignore any and all negative responses as their mindset continuously spirals them into paranoia, spite, and self destruction.

This is actually about two people in whom humanity and evil struggle. In the main character, humanity loses the struggle, but in Stanley, his deputy, humanity triumphs. It's not hard to figure out that it was Stanley who tipped off the police about Nick's murder. He was already having misgivings, and seeing Peter strike an old man who had been good to Peter was the final blow. I can even see Stanley visiting the old man's grave just to say, "I'm sorry. "

Wollmer killing and later deeply regretting the "only person he loved" mirrors Hitler's real life feeling of guilt for the death of his niece and original love Geli Raubal, who committed suicide in his apartment with his pistol in 1931. Those who knew Hitler personally always said that , even though he didn't have anything directly to do with Raubal's suicide, he legitimately blamed himself for her death until his own death in 1945, which supposedly why he refused to marry his longtime companion Eva Braun until two days before they committed suicide together.

I think that they should not have shown Hitler, but should have kept him in the shadows. It is more ominous like specter. It sort of symbolizes how hate and racism are always present but thinly veiled. Having Hitler time travel or still be alive as well as holding a speech in front of his own picture is a little on the nose. It would be more effective to simply have the shadowy figure.

This episode always makes me think that a previous evil Tyrant always mentors a new one or potential tyrant and makes me wonder if and who, in this episodes universe, came to Hitler. Would it be Napoleon, Vlad The Impaler or one of the worst Pharoah's or Roman Emperor's? Not to give sympathy to Hitler like we see with Vollmer. The premise just makes me think theres long chain of evil people creating the next link. Maybe I'd have liked to see twilight zone tackle more evil historical figures.

That's an interesting thought. Personally I figured Napoleon probably would have come to him.

Oh, Napolean was definitely an influence. Hitler just thought he could improve on what Napolean did... and ended up making the same fatal mistake.

I always thought one of the most salient lessons of this episode is that rhetoric, or the skill with which an idea is presented, doesn't respect or correlate with the merit of the idea. Rhetorical methods, persuasion and charisma are very similar whether the idea being conveyed is good, evil or otherwise. In other words, just because something or someone sounds good doesn't mean it shouldn't be questioned.

This episode reminds me of an issue of Fantastic Four from Lee/Kirby where a character called Hate Monger spreads bigoted and xenophobic comments in NYC and it’s revealed to be Hitler

Trivia time! I met the late Mark Goddard ("Lost in Space") at a con...and I asked him "pop quiz! What oscar winner and big time actor was on an episode of the '60s twilight zone?" "Billy Mummy never got one.." "Dennis Hopper." I answered.. "WAIT, REALLY?" Mark said.. "I'm friends with Dennis, he never told me that!!"

I'm actually glad they did the darker hair as if it was the current Adolf Hitler and not an old one like if he survived. I think it fits the narration at the end a lot better.

Is it just me, or is Ernst supposed to be like a mirror to Adolf? He looks similar to me, and is also a father (furhur) figure. I just can't help feeling that there's some symbolism there that I can't quite grasp.

If you are interested in a in exploring the idea of the episode further, there is a german book/ movie with the same concept, called: Look Who's back. Don't be fooled by the comedic satire. By the end of the story, you'll have chills running down you're spine, especially if you understand Germany's current political climate.

This episode, along with Deaths-Head Revisited, were some of my favorites. Like the former, the actors here were escaped people from Germany, giving their performance that extra weight. Another interesting thing to note is the costumes. The collar tabs and armbands bear the statue of liberties torch, which is ironic, but I believe intentional. I know, even before I saw this, that it was done for censorship reasons, notice no swastikas are seen at all. Ironically, The only thing that hurts rewatching is its ending, which is very predictable, who he has been speaking to.
