Just finished game 1, not impressed by LSV’s draft/play. Sure, he got a lot of good cards, but that’s not skill it’s luck. He didn’t seem to notice the Arboreal Grazer; it’s a pretty good limited card. Passing on Vraskas Finisher for Spark Reaper had me scratching my head. I just don’t see him being so far ahead or behind that sac for draw is a good move. And with two Merfolk Skydivers flying in for 1 dmg, there’s a good chance that the kill PW ability on Vraska could be relevant. He was so busy thinking about Viv that he didn’t flash in a Ceratok to give his wurm trample.

With one Guardmage already, and some white cards, it’s tough to pass up the second guardmage. Shift gears from GBU and go for WB splash U. If he had, he would have gotten a 3rd on the next pass; 3 copies in a 40 card deck you’d expect to find one if not two per game. I thought there was an Amonkhet block card like this, but I might be imagining that. Either way, it’s really good in limited.

Am I missing something? Luis in round 2 keeps mentioning how many Elite Guardmages there were on the table, but he's playing in a league. Is it because there are so few players left in the single elim. that it's just very unlikely that another pod has fired since he finished his draft?

Having watched Ben Stark's draft before this one, i found it really interesting to see their difference in evaluating Kiora, while Ben was in other colors he didn't seem very up on her, while Louis seems to evaluate her as pretty strong seemingly regardless of the deck he is in... Now after a few drafts i will have to side with Louis on this one, it's not just untapping a land that makes her strong, some games force a full boardstate (had this a couple of times already) and with planeswalkers to protect you don't really want to always attack, but if you have profitable attacks it's nice to just attack and untap that attacker after combat for pseudo vigilance to have an extra blocker up... will say though that in the deck Ben was in i likely wouldn't pick up a Kiora just for that, like any card in magic the strength of the card seems to really depend on the deck you find yourself drafting, same goes for Kiora… but i mention this mostly due to the general words used in the evaluation of the card and the intonation of the voice in regards to it, their evaluation is so opposite :)

It’s terrible versus anything control unless you play it on turn 3. Anytime after that, and it’s something opponent doesn’t worry about letting resolve because you stopped applying pressure in order to essentially ramp. Whatever you use her to ramp out probably gets countered. It’s bleh versus aggro as well because you probably had to stabilize before playing her, and she wants you to have turned the corner before playing her.

@@chrisp2757 sure it's not a P1P1, but pseudo vigilance is definitely a thing so she is not just ramp. Also very likely you play a few fatties in a deck she'd be in so drawing a card if very likely. But mostly i think my comment was sort of about the conclusion that some people just like certain playstyles, and more than likely build their evaluation of cards based on that.

For the record: I know this is draft/limited. I was kinda referring to what Kiora does in Standard. You really need to draw two cards to get value from her. I like her more in WG than a deck with U. Honestly though, I think in draft, WG proliferate can shine with mostly creatures. Ceratok, Bloom Hulk, and the hexproof Croc are too good at common. Uncommons can easily finish out the deck. It’s not flashy, but the power level is high and it’s consistent.

WotC doesn't quite support streaming of MTGO though, particularly in the MPL. So, all MPL-wanna-be streamers are forced to go to Arena.

This draft is insane, you got 5 useful rares/mythic and even got to pass on the shitty submarine rare and the white ritual. When I draft I get Ignite the Beacon twice, a Parhelion II and white isn't even open lol

Love it when a “pro” like LSV is faced with a 5 lander, a great blocker and a kill spell, but says nah... with Viv, Vivs Grizzly, Spark Reaper, Kiora and Tamiyo, he has several ways to gain card advantage when he already has the land. Not to mention there’s a chance he’s just beating face with all his high power cards. Guys, you’ve played magic before, what works out more often: 2 lands and your 4+ cmc bombs, or 5 lands and 2 spells?

It won’t be good in constructed. If you miss on the -2, you start exiling lands. If you play against aggro, you won’t have the mana to cast something the turn you cast her before you lose. Versus control, well, just don’t try to play her.

She needs a deck built around her, not going to happen in draft. Too easy to slaughter a Saheeli deck in draft. Not much in the way of an artifact that you want to copy. So you need to cast her, then cast a noncreature to make a token, then cast a good creature for the token to copy for 1 turn. Meanwhile, opponents thundering ceratok just beat you. You’re just wrong. Wasting several picks only to switch gears for 1 copy of Saheeli?
