Bonus Fact: The name Okoto (the blind Boar God) means "The Eye" in Bulgarian! AND Miyazaki sent a Japanese Katana to the head of Disney as thanks for publishing the film in the West. However, he attached a label that read "No Cuts" - referring to Disney's request to edit his film for a younger, western audience!

This is my favorite Miyazaki/animated film of all times! I love the deep and mature themes of the movie and the interaction between San and Ashitaka; especially Ashitaka's quest to "see with eyes unclouded by hate." I saw Wolf children on TV and just had to buy the DVD. Its such a good movie. For those who haven't watched it, as the name implies its about a single mother who is trying to cope with her children on her own, who can transform into wolfs at will. Only she knows about this from the father, who was also a wolf man. through out the film there are time skips as the children age, and the children must face life's obstacles to keep their ability a secret.

The very first time I saw any part of this movie was a few minutes of the wolves talking while flipping through stations on my Dad's hotbox. (A hotbox was a device used to steal cable before the switch to digital signals. Back before dvds exhisted and video stores were still profitable businesses) It wasn't until some time later during our monthly trip to the video store that I stumbled across a vhs box with the wolf on it and I got to see the whole movie. It was both my first Ghibli film and, as far as I know, my first anime film.

Princess Mononoke is on of those films I knew I would enjoy from the moment I saw the art. I adore the movie and San was my entire reason for watching it. I love the raised by animals trope and the scenery in Mononoke is breathtaking. Everytime I see the film I want to go hiking and just look at nature. As for them keeping the title Mononoke due to inability to translate it, I consider that a smart decision. The most simple translation is spirit, but the nuanced translation is spirits created by people, in the Japanese Mononoke myths the spirits that haunted were created by people's insecurities and hate. Those powerful emotions gave form to horrible representations. In a way referencing that the titular spirit of princess Mononoke are only made so in the eyes of the humans and only due to their hatred, well save for the dolls which more reference the ambient spirits. It's an extremely nuanced meaning that is best left to research rather than translate. Edit: originally I used monster in place of spirit but upon further thinking bakemono refers specifically to a monster while Mononoke refers more to ambiguous spirits with there being some fueled by hate and others that simply inhabit a place.
