That's a bit misleading. Colorism is rampant in Singapore (white people are idolized, then East Asians. Southeast and South Asians are treated poorly and goven low priority in terms of jobs, especially in modeling and entertainment).

What our government is doing, is showcasing to the world while CRA is still viral, that Singapore is uncompromising with its laws especially when it comes to NS. It's not surprising they choose to release this given the recent Benjamin Davis case. Kevin Kwan is "wanted" because he did break our laws. That is a fact. I'd say he is most likely just going to be fined, but, who knows?

Yeah, it seems weird that the government did not retain him while he was there last year while CRA was being shot. Now suddenly when the movie became big, this news came out. Well, if Kevin is still the executive producer for CRG, he might say, "Less location shots in Singapore and more in Malaysia/China since I can't step into Singapore."

I think Kevin missed Singapore given he grew up here and that's why he chose to write the setting of his book with Singapore in mind. But he couldn't return to Singapore because he is wanted for defaulting NS. And I don't believe he returned to SG, for the filming, he'd have been picked up and Changi Airport and detained. If anyone's to blame, it's probably his parents who overlooked this when they decided to move to the states. He was still a boy anyway. Internet or even "Google" wasn't a thing in the 1990s, how would he have known that not registering for NS would have such an impact in his adult life.
