Condoms should be free for everybody . Kids pay with suffering bcs adults are not capable to control their reproducing system. Actually all countries should support and privilege families with kids in order to make sure the next generations grow up healthy and sane for everybody's benefit. But if it does not happen ,why should they be put through hardship since day one ?

When I saw Sky's interview I understood why his family is in this state. Its because of him and his thinking. Both my wife and I are blind. We have three healthy kids. I am the only one working to support the family. My wife is not working and we are not on welfare from SSO. I have high blood but I stay away from the nice food which he said is nice because I know if I am down my whole family will go down with me. You can eat those nice food once in awhiile but not everyday. He said he can easily get a high paid job earning more so he should be a man and take up the responsibility get his health back start eating healthy and start exercising. 2k a month is not alot don't overthink. You cannot have the best of everything. Start doing something.

I am also thankful, I am Thai, every one who are Thai citizen can go to public hospital with cheap medical expenses. Some poor can get free service if get subsidised by the public hospital. Our prime minister Prayuth has already launched the emergency service with 48 hrs which all patient with unconscious can admit the nearby hospital including private one with no cost, this is supporting by government who will compensate to the hospital. If you have no place to sleep nor food, just get help from those temple and municipality. Now we have aging fund to every elderly people starting 60yrs onwards on monthly basis, cash to poor per month etc. Free education upto high school in public schools. If I have seen this clip, I always thought that Singaporean has good life.

Looking around at other poor and impoverished groups of people in the world. The common denominator seems to be the lack of birth control leading to over stretching a family's limited resources. I was born in Singapore and my father had eight children and we were impoverished. So poor that I had to leave school after Year 10, unable to continue to HSC because I had to find work to support my father and family. Fast forward fifty years. I learnt from that lesson and have only two children. Now I live very comfortably in another country (not that it matters) and at 72, I still work in the IT industry. I got here by working , educating myself, living a clean and healthy lifestyle and creating good Karma. When you help others worst off than yourself, things seem to fall into place when you least expected it. It is not luck but good Karma. Few people will agree with me, but good Karma also means not bringing another child into this world at a time when you cannot afford to provide. Especially if you live in a society where family planning is available. No, I will not say you are poor. What I went through in my early years is nothing compared to being poor in some countries where daily life is rummaging through a rubbish tip filled with used syringes and bandages, to look for scraps. What I had was apples and fruits left on some street corners with joss sticks that people used to leave as prayer offerings.

The Singaporean government is rich and if you think that all Singaporeans are rich that is a stereotype. I would say majority of Singaporeans are living a comfortable life and at least 10% are living a low income household. The good thing I like about Singapore is that there is always a community/ social service if you need help financially, I really hope it helps these people suffering from poverty.

I with many other friends who were born from poor and multi siblings single parent families. We felt it is really taxing for both the parents and the children. Kids like us since young struggled through school due to overwhelming financial problems and have to forsake studying and work to provide for the family earlier. Given that Singapore is a paper qualification society as of now unlike last time, it has many detrimental issues such as depression. As per this Chinese saying, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

You cant help those who refuse to help themselves. Most of the time, it will be a toxic cycle for these families and pass on to future generations until the parents make appropriate actions and decisions to improve their livelihood. Really hope that the parents and children will learn that the way they are living is not appropriate for the current society, know that change is the only solution for a better life and work hard for a change to improve things for themselves and their families. Self-pity is perfectly fine for a few moments to empathise with oneself but they cannot sink deeply into it and wish help will make its way to them like God's gift. Work for what you need/want. Very thankful for the social services and support the government has for our citizens!

Being poor is "genetic",the kids grew up with their parents bad financial and poor decision making habbits. Sad to say they probably will have a long cycle of poverty. This is why most rich kids themselves are usually much more motivated and excels better than the average kids. Children subconciously learns from their parents. SMH. Your life is already hard enough, why bring more kids and force them to suffer! I heard of social worker telling me of ppl having 8 kids squeezing in one rental flat! What quality of life are they giving their kids? They only want to satisfy their own selfish urge to procreate without thinking of consequences. I will never wanna be a social worker cos most of these ppl bring the predicament upon themselves. There’s never a day where I think “Having a kid will improve my financial situation.”

High blood pressure is not a good excuse to not take a full-time job... It can be managed with the right medication, which he could afford with that $2k/month salary... He's just plain lazy. It's pretty obvious. Chuan Chuan is probably with him because she thinks she can't take care of 3 children alone. My mom is a single mom with 4 kids... That husband is probably the source of their financial burden. Another alternative could be that the husband should just stay at home and take care of the children so the wife could get a job with good pay. She is clearly qualified. But too bad that "Sky" (like what kind of name is that?) is such a crappy and useless "man". And he'll be an even greater burden as they get older.

You should go through a long term hypertension to understand how the medication affects you and your memory even. Only recently they removed a drug from prescription because after more than 20 years it was realised that it caused damage to the kidneys. Stop condemning people who are sick. Hypertension is usually in the genetics, just like heart problems. Exercise helps a bit. Counseling sessions always advise the family members not to blame the person with hypertension, it is already depressing to suffer it. For some it affects them to the point of depression. It's true that in these situations, living apart might ease tensions. But to teach the other family members to despise or look down on the person is never right even though that person has character flaws. I speak from experience by trying to help all kinds of people. "no matter what they have done in the past, children should take care of their parents..." Ms. Koh, while this is true in general for most normal and functional parent-child relationships, perhaps you ought to also put yourself in the shoes of some of those grownup children who refused to support their parents and understand their reasons - some scars simply cannot and will not heal. I have personally looked after two teens under child protection whose mother was a compulsive gambler and was extremely aggressive and volatile, often threatening to chain the house gate and burn the whole family to death together or thrashing the entire flat and destroying the furniture whenever she fails to get money from her husband (the kids' father) to feed her gambling addiction or pay her debts. And she had on more than one occasion nearly stabbed or slashed the two kids during her tantrums when she would grab knives and choppers from the kitchen. There was even one ludicrous occasion when she dismantled the flat's main gate and door and left the parts on the ground before she happily went off on another gambling spree. Harassment from creditors was also a regular occurrence and she even stole the husband's IC to borrow money (don't ask me how the moneylenders would accept someone else's ID). Ironically, it was fortunate that the creditors behaved in a relatively far more civil manner in comparison to this woman and did not cause any physical hurt to them. The father's substantial retirement savings, which could have allowed the family to live quite comfortably, were wiped out completely to pay for her never-ending gambling losses and loan shark debts, but she finds it perfectly justifiable that her husband should be the one bearing the duty to settle the debts she herself incurred for her own enjoyment. Best part was, the father refused to take any action to safeguard the kids' well-being, including options such as obtaining a DEO and PPO, or to apply to ban her from the casinos despite urging from domestic violence counsellors simply because he was afraid she would divorce him! If the police and MSF had not intervened, the family would sooner or later have become part of the local murder-suicide statistics. Being filial is a reciprocating behaviour to repay the love and care that parents provided for children when they were young. When parents fail woefully in their duty as caregivers and protectors through their very own fault and selfish choices, they should not expect their children to play the same provider role to them in their old age.

1) If we really have the feeling that we’re not going to make it in this world, try our very best as not to have kids unless we were once doing good but somehow something unlucky befall us. However the poor of the world everywhere are with lots of kids, I cannot figure this out. I might be highly naive of this although highly educated and well read, I admit it. But that’s my on the spot thinking on the matter and what I would do if I know I’m up against incoming current in my life. My apology for the thoughts. 2) No matter how poor we are, never never let our mother and father be hungry or just leave them. Share even our small piece of fish slice three way with mother and father and make sure they are happy with the little we have. Hunger will not be felt if we take good care of our parents. This, I have experienced. 3) Awwww come on governments of the world. You can do better than this.

With regards to point 1, this is also extremely prominent in other developing countries. If you take a look at the extreme poor in countries like the Philippines, they tend to have more than 4 kids. To many of us, myself included, it seems silly to have more kids when you can barely afford to take care of 1. I think one reason the poor tend to have more kids is because they see their kids as a way to break out of the poverty cycle. Having more kids = higher chance of 1 one of them making it in life = a chance to bring the family out of the poverty cycle. It's essentially a slippery slope fallacy/mindset. When they are poor, they literally have nothing else to lose and they tend to have a very desperate mindset. Having kids to them is like buying the lottery. They know that it is costing them money, but with their desperation mentality, the 'what ifs' start to surface. "What if one of my kids is very smart, can get a scholarship, study well and earn big bucks". I mean, they are already SO poor. They have no capability to further their education, nor find a better paying job, and they are growing older and weaker each day. At that point in time, having a child is like altering their fate, and having a new chance at a better life - so they take their chances. They are aware that it will cost them even more to finance additional kids, but to them it's buying hope albeit uncertain. It is not a rational solution, but rationality don't operate in desperate minds.

@xdrumsticx2
@xdrumsticx2 5 жыл бұрын
@@Melcor2304 That's exactly it. If you have nothing left to lose, you can't lose any more than the little that you already have. That's how many of the extreme poor think. Yes they are barely surviving and they probably could 'save' more with fewer kids. But at that kind of poverty level, they rather take their chances at having more kids even if they cannot afford if it means a chance at a better life, than to take a chance at increasing their standard of living - an ideal that they feel they can never reach. It's quite ironic, but it's how it is. Ever lost a game and just gave up the whole game in totality? It's the same kind of mindset.

@Sid: I also question the logic of having more kids than you can feed. Makes no logical sense. Agree ss well on the parents thing, a son/daughter is not obligated to feed their parents but it is their honor to do so. Responsible parents won't treat their kids as retirement funds. Responsible parents prepare their for their own retirement. Partial agree on government. They should have medical subsidies and emergency food stubs or similar BUT each individual adult should work to try and fix his/her own situation as well. Government didn't put a gun on your head and tell you to make more babies. So as long as adults are responsible, any unforeseen issues...sickness and such... govt there to help. But if the adult is stupid and makes kids while not earning enough for his/her family....that's not the government's fault.

Can you imagine they wanted that old man to basically sue his kids, to force them to help provide for him? That would be pretty much the worst thing to do. And they’ve been estranged for 20 years. No way.
