Hi Rafie, thanks for sharing your story. I’m 80 years old. The lessons I leaned in my life are: 1. Don’t waste - especially time & money. The time we lost will never come back. We earn good money now so we must save for when we are out of a job or save for our old age & retirement. 2. Life is full of ups & downs. When we are down, we must get up, brush off the dirt & keep going. Learn why we fell down & not repeat the mistake. 3 We need to eat to stay alive. We don’t need to eat expensive meals to stay alive. We just need nutritious food. We eat to live but not live to eat. 4. Live a simple life. Be thankful if we have good health, 3 meals a day & a roof over our head. Enjoy everyday - doing things that make us happy, help the less fortunate people, make positive contributions to society, our communities, humanity etc 5. Health- this is most important. We must maintain our health & ensure we have good health. We cannot enjoy life if we have poor health. There’s a story about a young man who worked very hard working long hours to accumulate wealth. He became very wealthy. When he was about 60 years old he suffered bad health & spend his wealth to regain his health. The moral of this story is : Health is more important than Wealth. I'm only in my early 20s now and I think it's so easy to forget yourself when you're young... You go out, spend money and do stupid things but forget that time lost is something you never get back. I think Rafie's story is a great reminder to all of us youngins to live a measured life. Life can be as beautiful and adventurous without having to sacrifice on the future. I absolutely bawled my eyes out while happily laughing, when he said, "My name is Rafie, I'm 51, and *I'm doing my best* " I finally just got back on my feet from the Coronavirus at 27. I was disabled, and terminated from my job due to tearing a ligament in my shoulder during that time. I was living in my car, and have seen alot of things in the streets in LA that I was sheltered from the majority of my life. I feel for anyone who has to do the tent-style. I finally just got back on my feet with a one-bedroom apartment, and a Head-Chef job. I'm so tired, and always stressed about money. But, hey, *I'm doing my best* , and I want to see my accomplishments.

I was the same age as you, with the same shoulder injury. I had to leave my job where I had no protection nor benefits, and move in with parents which I was so lucky to do. It took me a year to recover and I am also now back on my feet. I woke up this morning and left the house feeling lucky to have another day where I get to be alive, and have many blessings. I think in the end that is all that matters.

I've been in LA going on 5 years. I'm from north of there originally. Like Fresno.. up there. Did car homelessness. Lived in abandoned buildings. Been to hospitals. Lived in programs. Been on the street. It's a wild place. The homeless services here got me into housing. I was employed the last year into my time at the program. Was in Venice during 2020, when everything was going down around the pier. Glad I got out. Leaving my state tho... nah. Being homeless young was in some ways pretty unfortunate but being under 25 made me eligible for a wider range of services. Youth more easily reintegrate to society and work culture. Right now I get to take a leave and pay only $100 in rent. My rent will always be a third of my income. Working a regular minimum wage job and keeping up with the bureaucratic aspects of the housing program is a good enough exchange for me to have housing. In the Valley, we don't have those opportunities.. I doubt other states have them either.

Californian here, I stopped socializing after my friends circle wasting money hanging out constantly. Now I just find deals on things and saving as much as I can, I know one day sh!ts gonna hit the fan. I stay single, knowing a full on family would mean massive bills in exchange for a little comfort and sex at the most, if she is driven and looking for a better man, a life style I can't afford, it's gonna be a living hell. Rafie is smart and responsible, didn't drag a lady or kid into this. Yeah I feel lonely sometimes, but I'm being responsible. Having family and kids, carrying too much pressure on the shoulder would crush a morally good man when things go south. Good thing is when I die, nobody would be sad. The universe wouldn't care or change a bit.

When I was younger, I had the illusion of treating women good and spend for them will win their heart, only ended up being used as a tool and get dumped, it wasted a lot of years of my life. Now I'm already 30+ and all the women I dated openly talk about their "requirement", since I'm an non American born Asian, the dating pool is very limited here, local Americans ghosted me after noticed my background difference, I don't even have any attention from Americans anyways. It is their luck not to date me. Deep down I know I go out date is due to sexual drive, I hate kids and family, hate dealing with lot of family drama, hate the bad things in society overall. Why I don't move back to my own country, because it's also a big mess, chances are it might even be worse than western country. My dream is kill all the bad people in the world, the corruption in financial market and government, the school bully, the A$$hole in relationship. I don't have any love or care in my heart to build a family, even if I lost all my memory, I won't forget the vengeance, I don't want to lose control and harm my family, so it's better to stay away from it.

In my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

I suggest you offset your real estate and get into stocks, A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. I was the absolute reverse of your story. I lived frugally my entire life. I saved every penny, bought a condo put ever dollar into paying down a mortgage did everything right. I only earned 60k a year. Made all my own food, wore used clothing. Only bought luxury stuff for birthday's and Christmas. After 8 years living like this I was let go without cause when a peer poisoned me (workplace bullying). Won't go into details...but long story short unemployment can happen to anyone. I was lucky enough to only hold mortgage debt. I couldn't pay it so I sold the condo to pay that debt off. Lost 200k on the value of it. If I had been able to hold onto it until the COVID crisis it would have been worth a lot more. I had nowhere to go. No job, no rental lease. I had to move back to my parents. Lucky they had a room for me or I would be right where you are. I struggled for 5 years to find alternate work barely making ends meet to pay for food. I did EVERYTHING right...and I'm not much better off then you are. I'm only living in a room because I had a relative to take me in. Society is cruel to folks. I think we need to find the happy balance between spending money and fueling our economy so those jobs are out there, and living buying only what we need to survive physically and for mental health enjoyment.

I had no relative to take me in long term when I was a teenager. Some of my own family members and friends were homeless. Each person I met who had been homeless previously claimed that they got help from some type of program for the homeless. After I was 18 I left the town and went into a program for young people myself to get in on the subsidy. Had a brain injury when I was 20 living in a hospital before moving to interim housing. Now I have disability benefits on my housing voucher. Some people could abuse the program yes but after seeing what it is to be on the street I don't want to go through it again. The high life, luxury, hustling, it's not worth it. I would rather have a bed to sleep on and a lock on the door.

After graduating i worked like hell without stopping until i bought a house in a good location and saved up some money to invest in a fund. No expensive watches, clothes and all that. Ocassional drinks but no vices. Once i did all that i finally had TIME to hang out with my friends and family, and time to exercise abit and focus on my general well being. If you want to have time on your side, make the right decisions, its worth it my friends.

I can so relate to this, I make close to what he makes. I was back from a vacation, stayed in a hotel for over a month since I was supposed to search for new apartments and never did, I was busy gambling every night. One night, I lost everything I had and was homeless for 3 days until my next paycheck. I can never forget those days, I didn't eat anything 3 days straight, I slept at the airport, left my bags at airport luggage storage, I took shower at my workplace gym, the coffee at workplace was my only source of energy.

I was broke a couple times actually, my friends always helped me without hesitation, since I would pay them back. So, I took it for granted and gambled like a madman. That time, I wanted to punish myself and I didn't ask anyone or let them know of my situation (Actually, no one knows about this story, it was supposed to die with me). I never gambled recklessly since then. I still play sometimes, for a tiny fraction of what I have.

I've been dealing with a large financial setback and for almost a year I've been dealing with so much pain, regret, sleeplessness nights, anxiety, depression, you name it. Being able to earn high income is one thing; being able to have the financial knowledge is another thing; and having the financial discipline to not spend the money recklessly is quite another (and the most crucial). This story reminds me of when I was working in the finance industry. In the division that I worked in, everyone of us had, at least, a finance or business-related degree and more than half of us had MBA (we knew about finance); everyone of us made, at least, $200,000/year on the low-end (we earned good income); but unfortunately, quite a few of us were still living paycheck-to-paycheck (because some of us did not have the financial discipline to not spend money on "liabilities"). As a finance professor now, I try to advise my students about living below their means and invest smartly.. Unfortunately, I think that only 1%-2% of my students follow my advice. Oh! well. I can only advise them; I cannot live their lives for them.

The mentally stronger person always manages to convince the metally weaker 1 to crave in and spend. But thats how the nature balance works itself out. Cant be all herbivores and no carnivores. Lesson is no matter how much you make always have a emergency fund set up. I personally recommend 1 year of all necessary expenses but Im fearful of this happening to me so Im building up to 5 years worth.

10 years ago, my life was hell. I was unemployed, rejected, and avoided by everyone, even by my own relatives. Got kicked out and disowned by my own family. Even got to the point of trying to end my life back then. Flash forward 10 years. I'm now in my 40s, living in an apartment, driving a decent car, working as a Sr. Software Engineer and living happily with my girl. Despite my new life, I still get flashbacks whenever I see homeless people on the streets. So I try to do what I can to help them, whenever I have the resources. You don't look at homelesness the way you used to be, once you get to experience becoming one yourself. Sleeping at a 7-11, grabbing sugar and coffee creamer sachets at coffee shops, lining up for a morsel at free food samples at the mall, being grateful for fallen fruits on the sidewalk, or finding a crumpled paper bill on the streets after walking aimlessly the whole day. I've been thru all of that. And let me tell you what, it's f***ing embarrassing and humiliating. You scream and cried to God, but there's no answer. All you hear is yourself, followed by a deafening and gloomy silence. Once you realize you're the only one who can help yourself, change start to happen. You become a new man, immune to fear and intimidation. If you're one of those going thru such hardships, I just wanna let you know that I'm rooting for you. Go face your fears. It's always worth the fight!

@@chronicreader You're right, some people are their own worst enemy. They might have legitimately been dealt a bad hand in life. I can empathize with that. But also, there's a personal accountability they have to own. The old saying "you can't help those that won't help themselves" is something I keep coming back to with some people I know.

I am living that shit. As soon as I graduated from the university, the relative I was living with started to become cold towards me. It's not because I'm lazy but I am unemployed. I desperately look for a job with the fibre of my being but none of the companies wants to hire me, on top of that, requiring me to have a two years of experience for junior position is really exasperating. I messed up bad in my twenties and l early thirties like this. Luckily people kept me in their home. I now save and earn 80k this year. No matter how much money, you save. I save almost half because I was almost homeless. Even the person with the good life can have a demise

That's why people must have proper savings during their high point, because eventually everyone will have their low point be it retirement or health issues where money is not coming in, when you earn more you can save more, don't wait until your income dropped then you start saving. Sounds easy but it's not, there's peer pressure all around you, when people are spending on cars, condo, cruise trips, Europe holidays, naturally the temptation will be there especially when you're earning high income. Spending $50K a year doesn't seem much for someone with 6 figures income, but imagine saving that $50K every year, with compound interests it'll accumulate to half a million in less than 10 years, which could be put towards a proper retirement.

Well, in 1972 when I received my recruit’s monthly pay of $90 for national service, I can save $45 . 3 years ago, I took a taxi home from Changi Airport and the taxi driver said he used to earn $2,000 in the 70’s ( against my paltry $90 monthly pay ) . So to each his own.
