Rising number of homes with high formaldehyde levels seeking professional help

More people are seeking professional help to get rid of a cancer-causing chemical called formaldehyde from their furniture in homes. Some treatment firms say cases have spiked by up to 70 per cent compared to last year. Sherlyn Seah reports.

The cheap contractor might not even know what formaldehyde is. Best to stay away from cheap fake wood and cheap contractors and just use real solid wood or buy from ikea.

Now I know the smell and stinging sensation I have when I moved in earlier this year. My ID did not explain to me the type of materials and chemicals they were going to use. Most of the time it is not the home owners that are trying to save on costs, rather it is the ID and contractors trying to increase their profit margins while giving inferior quality. This is all lacking regulations.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any regulation or enforcement in using certified and tested materials. Just check the number of negative reviews on Hometrust which homeowners has been increasing complaining.

I've always felt the stinging sensation whenever I go into new homes. Occasionally, drawers also triggered the stinging sensation for me. I always knew it's some kind of gasses but unsure what's that until this video. My family members always say I'm overly sensitive & I'm glad that this video has proven I'm right!

You are definitely not imagining the stinging sensation. Formaldehyde is real (its odourless too) and it does have long term health effects. We have been getting increasing numbers of homeowners who are complaining about it Hometrust.

Surprised that SG monitors the chemicals that goes into food, but do not monitor the types of chemicals used in paints and wood treatment. Same problem in US and elsewhere with paints containing lead were used until recently. You will get the whole list from googling chemicals commonly used in building materials.

Contractors cutting corners more often now in the face of rising costs and clients who are even more price-sensitive now. I remember when I was studying for my 2nd diploma years ago that this was not a huge issue then as many contractors were moving away from such low cost solutions.

The problem is the period from reno commencement to moving in is a short 2 to 3 months in SG context while formaldehyde takes at least a good 6 months to dissipate through simple ventilation. And the problem seems to occur quite often in built-in fixtures like wardrobes and cabinets. Perhaps it is better to use non-custom-made furniture that would have been aired sufficiently.

not as easy as you might think. as mentioned it is generally used as binding agent during furniture assembling by the contractors (or DIY), some will use liberally while others use sparsely. Its like asking them to regulate how much salt the cooks put on your cai peng. Do we also talk about outright ban on these chemical? Then who will ultimately bear the cost for using green alternatives?

Almost everything we use has formaldehyde. Most good contractors will open all the windows and help reduce the level. You can use fans to blow on all cabinets for at least a week before moving in.

actually if you work in an open ventilated area, you will not notice it that strong. However, once you close up an area like a room with no open ventilation, then you will have those chemical accumulation hence the stinging feeling.

Paints are equally toxic, however it is from another chemical (benzene). Good thing is that benzene dissipates much faster (couple weeks max) while formaldehyde can take up to years. Do check out Hometrust for negative feedback from other homeowners to safeguard your renovation.

I moved to Croatia, purchased a wardrobe at a furniture store, took it out of the box in my spare bedroom. Within minutes I had to leave the room. I tried to air out the room for months leaving the window open and an air purifier but it still stinks and gives me an instant headache. Your ID probably didn'y know about it too since it takes no qualification to be officially certified as an ID. Not saying all IDs are like this, there are reputable ones, but we do see increasing IDs who are not doing the best jobs out there. Good quality materials, especially plywood and the glue to adhere the laminates to the carpentry makes a difference.

Many of the fixtures and cabinets are produced and manufactured in their Malaysia factory before transporting it over to Singapore. Even though the ID shared with you that it is made on-site in your home before fixing it up, most of the time their tools etc are not purchase locally.

Taobao furniture and accessories. This has always been a PRC toxic new home problem since their open doors. Not surprised that many products have high formaldehyde to help associated companies get business cleaning them. Very much like some countries politicians refusing to improve their waterworks so their family water bottling business continues booming.

Not surprised, a lot of people want to go for cheap, save costs etc when it comes to renovations. Fittings which are lower in formaldehyde tend to be more expensive. It wouldn’t help if the space isn’t well-ventilated during the renovation process as well

FYI formaldehyde at one time was used to Decaffeinate coffee beans. Now is done with Methylene Chloride, which doesn't sound any better.

It’s all true, I have been in the custom cabinet business since 1986. I will not sell and refuse to sell Chinese knockdown cabinets full of formaldehyde. There’s also Sheetrock and other materials with the same problem. Extremely cheap to purchase with a nice profit margin. It’s a major health risk. Your eyes are stinging and watering as it’s being taken off the truck.

the formaldehyde is due to the type of plywood that are used to make the furnitures like counters, cabinets. Those plywood are normally from indonesia that has strong smell which was meant to prevent internal bugs. However, the problem is it takes a long time to air out and made worst with the laminates used to seal the wood. Indonesian plywood are cheaper hence why used by contractors to make custom furniture.

if you check how the worker install the cupboard and drawer, you will know why this happen. The worker even uses hand to put the glue on the surface, and then adhere the surface layer. Two parts of source: 1 in the polywood 2 high amount from the glue (yellow glue). When you feel eye dry, it is roughly 0.2-0.3, and the case could be 0.6/0.7 in the warm afternoon.

The so called expert claiming many components of materials and most dont use formaldehyde。 before any plywood are imported. The importer must sent the plywood for test in Singapore before selling to contractors and IDs. These would then force the singapore importers to conducts checks and discussion with their plywood suppliers in Indonesia and China for examples to comply. Such practices already exist in semiconductor.
