Ensemble: Ligeriana, Dir. Katia Caré
Album: Chansons de Toile, tales of belles ‘Aiglentine, Beatris, Ysabiauz’ (XIIth et XIIIth centuries)
/ musicamedievale

In the late twelfth and early thirteenth century the trouvères, musicians and poets from the north of France, devise the Chanson de toile, a genre of narrative old French lyric poetry. Typically, the lyrics of the compositions tell the story of a young, often married woman pining for a lover, with a happy ending. The genre's name derives from toile; that is, they are supposed to have been sung by women who were weaving, and the female main characters also sew as they relate their stories. Some fifteen of them remain; five were written by Audefroi le Bastart, the others are anonymous, it also suggests that since the woman's voice in the chanson de toile is so prominent some of them may have been composed by women. Musically some of them are quite ornate, considering the relatively simple narrative.
In most cases, the song begins with a brief and sympathetic history of a woman: she is either absent from her lover or married unhappily to an older nobleman and in love with a knight. All but one end happily, the one exception is Bele Doette who learns that her lover has died and then founds a monastery into which she retreats. The women sometimes appear careless, but their charm and demeanor are attractive. The chansons de toile are considered some of the most beautiful poems produced in Old French, and their importance was such that some of them were included in romances, in which they were sung by the heroines.
Also known as "chansons d’histoire" or story songs, they are narrative pieces in the style of tragedy. These substantial epic poems relate love affairs or daydreams. Suffused with passion and romance, the stories give us an insight into the ‘private secrets’ of "Beles" heroines. Through their mediaeval rhetoric, they testify to the out-of-time existence of ‘eternal woman’. Ensemble Ligeriana offers the first ever complete illustration of the wealth of inspiration in these pieces, in a version for women’s voices only, in which the performers take turns to bring back to life the atmosphere of collective creation that went with the daily tasks in the "women’s room".
I wish you happy listening!

How wonderful is it that we can finally somewhat hear and experience women's intimate experiences from more than 500 years ago. I was introduced to the concept of Chansons de toile 20 years ago by a french singer (Émilie Simon) I really adore. Back then, a 12 years from a poor family with no education and no knowledge of musical theory, it was impossible to grasp what the term meant musically, only it's historical background (and information was really limited). And now I am blessed with this amazingly middle of the night discovery. I am a Hildegard Von Bingen fan, so this complements it well. Thank you so much, it touched my soul.

After reading the description, it’s both comforting and disturbing to know that people never change...and people’s inner lives in the medieval period are not much different then our own. We’ve always had our unrealistic fantasies of love and romance 🧚🏼‍♂️

Yes, people remain the same in core responses. There's a young English guy who studies linguistics and makes videos, who says he got interested in making videos using Anglo Saxon dialogue so people would see that folks of those times were just like in in a sense-- no more foolish, no less intelligent, with the same kinds of emotional concerns. And it's important to see (methinks) that life was no idealized romp of beauty and spirituality (nor world of endless brutality.)

>Chansons de Toile: songs from women’s room I have a feeling that we will see some absolutely weird images as well....for our historical studies of course. We have to face the bare naked truth! On a side note, back in my school days, the boys bathroom was always horrible, where the girls bathroom was like paradise in comparison. A women could casually sit in there and sing and play the harp for the girls, to support "relaxation". In the boys bathroom, on the other hand, she would struggle to breathe and couldn't concentrate on her harp. In some way, the music would then sound like the smell, if you know what I mean. Music really speaks.

@@johnfalkenstine8377 There is no SSL certification, which really doesn't say that much. The only thing is that side injection should be impossible, but SSL certification doesn't give much protection. More a nice side income for ISP's than anything really useful as there are plenty of methods to inject malware. If you want some level of security, run Linux which doesn't leave known security bugs unfixed for decades like Windows and iOS. It largely depends on what type of site you're going. Avoid the clickbait and fringe porn sites and most of the time it will be okay. Any software download site without SSl certificates is to be avoided like the plague.

Does anyone have any information on the illuminated manuscript that seems to show the same woman over and over again, painting and reading, possibly the artist herself? I think it starts around 4:32. The one of the women spinning, carding, and doing other fiber arts is stunning! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

@MusicaMedievale where did you find these wonderful paintings? From old manuscripts? It shows evidence that women painted, even that they did wall paintings and other works (?) in 33:30, the woman in red painting what seems to be a saint? But now we are taught that "women were oppressed before"????!

Joseph Canteloube was a great musicologist, but I don't think this work has anything to do with him. 🌹

Dear Musica Medievale, Can you provide any details as to the first painting appearing in the sequence, of the lady painting a portrait? Out of art-historical interest, I would like to know a place, museum, a title, or a date etc. Much appreciated!

Dear Arturo, are you Italian? As you can see there are a lot of images taken from different manuscripts, it will be impossible to add all the codes+info+tracklist... When I use just one source I always write the name in the info. About the image that you have asked for, is from “De Claris mulieribus” by Giovanni Boccaccio, Ms. Royal 20 CV
