Chanterelle Mushrooms is the common name of several species of wild edible mushrooms in the genera Cantharellus. I was lucky to get out with my nephew to forage for wild Chanterelle mushrooms in northern Ontario's Algoma region, where we live. There are a lot of wild mushrooms you can eat in Ontario, but chanterelle mushrooms are one of our favourite. These wild mushrooms generally start to appear in late summer and will continue to grow for a few weeks. The video shows a bit about where to look for chanterelles and hiking around, mushroom picking in Ontario.

There is a guy in North Virginia who put the edible ones in a blender, mixed it with water plus fertilizer. Then put it the mixture in a spraybottle and dispersed it throughout the forest, next to his home. Winner ! Enjoy

I do this every year in Sweden. Chanterelle is a good bet. One tip for the other mushrooms is reading and researching. Start with species that don't have poisonous look-alikes.

What a great day of treasure hunting. Chanterelle's are the one mushroom that I am confident in identifying. Now if I could only find some in our area. Last time we picked was several years ago around Mt Rainier. Great haul guys.

A better idea for gathering is to use a decent size wicker basket and line it with a towel. This spreads out the mushers so they don't crush each other.
@Wilderstead

Baskets are certainly fun. However, the terrain we do a lot of our foraging in doesn't make using baskets easy. Climbing cliffs, waterfalls, etc. Thanks for tuning in Dave!

@@Wilderstead Whatever works to get the job done. Decades ago I lived in Thunder Bay - Sleeping Giant peninsula - and was amazed at not only the variety of mushers to pick but also their size. I'm originally from southern Ont (now in BC) and everything was much smaller. Honey fungus was the most popular in the bush along with Shaggy manes. Size-wise, fiddleheads, wild strawberries and blueberries were huge as well. Lawns in the city were carpetted in Morasmious oreades so when I lived there there was always an endless supply :-)

Your false chanterelle is actually a very tasy mushroom called saffron milk cap they are very good fried in butter and 100% edible We pick them every year and we much perfer them over chanterelles
@Wilderstead
@Wilderstead 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! It is a lactarius variety, but I’m not 100% sure that they are indeed the saffron milk cap. Couple weeks and they should be out again. This year my goal is to try and get a full ID on it. I’ve brought them home before but then completely forgot about them so I could research them.

WOW Do you just fry them up in a bit of butter like any other mushroom? We have white pine and birch here. I’m going to go look at the mushrooms I’ve seen here and see if they are the right ones.
@Wilderstead
@Wilderstead 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you can just fry them up with some butter, or use them in stews, soups, chilli, etc. They are a very tasty mushroom with a slight fruity flavour.

I also live in SSM. I pass by the Wilderstead fairly often and was always curious as to where I could find chanterelles. I often travel out to searchmont for lobster's, but haven't been lucky enough to find a good chanterelle spots. Any recommendations for areas that I may be able to log forest time? I've found them in town and harvested last year...however it doesn't seem as frugal as last year.

We typically put our focus on forested areas beside streams north of town

That so-called false chanterelle is actually not a false chanterelle. It is a member of the lactarius genus and very likely lactarius deliciosus or deterrimus. It is staining your fingers orange because of the orange latex that it exudes. A very delicious edible in its own right. The false chanterelle is a completely different species and looks quite different.
@Wilderstead
@Wilderstead Жыл бұрын
Yep, lactarius thyinos. Since properly id’ing them we’ve started harvesting them. Very tasty.
@joet81

@@Wilderstead nice! I don't think I've tried thynos yet- I get lots of deliciosus and deterrimus in my area of southern ontario- sometimes massive hauls around spruce stands and hemlock. I love foraging for mushrooms like that, where you can get huge amounts in a short amount of time! Can't wait for chanterelle season! We have been getting some good rains here so hopefully the season will be good this year. Last year it kind of sucked in my area. Looks like you got some pretty good amounts of chanterelles in your area! Happy hunting!

Also worth noting is that true chanterelles grow in soil, not wood as many false chanterelles do.

@Wilderstead

Yep, those ones are Lactarius Thyinos - orange milk caps. They’re pretty tasty too but have other very similar lookalikes, so if you plan to harvest, definitely do your research.
