I went on my very first mushroom hunting expedition yesterday and found a lion's mane!! I'm a newby to this, so I'm only harvesting the ones I'm 100% sure of and, like you said, you can't get it confused with anything else!!

Congratulations! One of the best tasting mushrooms in the world right there! It is very safe, However there are some great ways to confirm. I recommend posting pictures to a FB group and ask for confirmation. I I still do that myself when leaning a new shroom. Its always a good idea to use multiple channels for confirming your identifications. Congrats a again!

Thanks for this video, you do a nice job explaining the types & what to look for to identify in the fall. I am going on my 2nd hunt tomorrow with a friend, weather permitting. Hoping to find enough to share, and a few types. I found young chicken of the woods last week. Was given some for the 1st time the week before while camping, & so enjoyed them. I live in IL (more northern) so it was especially nice to see a video from a IN person. Thanks

That is defiantly a possibility seeing I have about 1400 feet of river frontage on the Kewaunee. It's about mile or so up river from the Public boat launch just up from the second Bridge on the east side of the river if your a google earth kinda guy. My brother has the first house on the river and my land starts south of his.

Lets trade info and discuss if you are at all interested. Well thank yoy very much and thx watching…. Honey mushrooms are a great one to know. Best tip I could give if u are just starting out is to focus on families and genuses of mushrooms. Polypores as a whole have a lot of edible varieties and are usually pretty easy to distinguish. I did some shrooming in TX a few years ago but it had been extremely dry so ended up just pig hunting instead. I was SW of San Antonio so a pretty arid area. I was curious if there were any shrooms that liked the live oak trees that are so common down there. What part of TX are u in? Just curious

Howdy, sounds like you know your shrooms... I am in Indiana just outside Terre Haute... I would guess the difference is the huge oak population in the woods I hunt. Many of the more mixed species woods i hunt don't tend to give me the huge harvests... of course years of trial and error has led me to know which woods pop when. But I did find my best woods years ago simply by searching for the thickest population of old oak trees I could find.... seems like where i find the oaks usually i also find lots of maple and beach so the shrooming all around is good. Happy Shrooming!

@reliablyrandomoutdoors
@reliablyrandomoutdoors 5 ай бұрын
@@kennyrupert1402 ok genius, what is the danger? Maybe if you don’t want to sound like a troll you should mention the mechanism of danger. Is it toxic, is it bacterial, is it some metamorphic change, does it become infested with parasites. What is it that changes in this mushroom that is not easily rectified with proper pressure canning or cooking as is illustrated in this video? Btw I easily supplement about 20% of my families food intake with wild foraged, gardened, and killed food. So please! Teach me something! Oh and my hobbies include food preservation. And as far as food classes I have only taken ones that apply to modern kitchen operations and food safety rules. Again please teach me something! I’m hoping you aren’t just some dingus that just took a foraging class and now considers himself an expert. Because your statement seems clueless to me as I believe it to only be a culinary preference, one which I understand. As a survivalist who counts on food from nature one has to open up their minds to more than just choice condition mushrooms. Just sounds like you live in a small world but want people to think you are important. So here is your chance…. Teach me something

@@lizzucco5455 haha, sorry, I have a tendency to mirror back what people give me. Plus what he was saying had little merit. As a culinary choice I agree, or if you are specifically in the pac west region if memory serves there is one species that builds a tanon from a certain tree as it ages, which btw most books recommend avoiding that species all together. But he didn’t know any of that which means he wasn’t that knowledgeable, so admittedly I did get irritated because there are a lot of people who spread disinformation on mushrooms. Partly because there just aren’t that many people who can call out their BS. I am by no means the foremost source on mushrooms. I have been studying and eating them for over 20 years and in that time I have learned a lot. Some of these mushrooms I use and lean on as a food source and have become extremely familiar with over the years. This being one of them. I am no Adam Harrington, but I at least know what I know and what I don’t know and I don’t try to tell people I know things if I’m wrong or I’m willing to admit if I am and learn from it as evidence one of my videos where I miss identified laporta canadensis.
