The thing I find most funny about people saying design details like shoes doesn't matter is that it really *does* matter. They might not care very much about the process behind a character's deisgn but each element is usually thought out carefully to convey what they want to convey about a character. A great example is the all the variations in Shadow's design before we got the one we know today. There's a reason why red on Sonic feels like a bold splash of color showinf his bold personality, while red on Shadow moreso conveys a more aggressive personality, and it comes down to the elements of their design that make them that way. A lot of people will say that it "isn't that deep" refusing to see that why our favorite characters are our favorites is because of their designs. And analyzing what works for someone and what doesn't is very much a valid thing to do. Care about it or not even seemingly minute details can make or break a character for people and its good to critically examine those details.

the one nitpick I have with the soap shoes is how sonic usually grinds on the rails. He usually has both feet pointing up a little bit, so he would be grinding on the edge of his soles, not where the arch actually is, which sucks because it would have been really cool seeing the rail actually fit in flush with the arch. That, and quite a fair amount of rails recently have been made squared, rather than round. There is some artwork that has the flush grinding and I gotta say, it does look pretty damn cool. I just wish some of the utility from the soap shoes were shown a little more. Bonus too, puma had released a variant of sonics standard shoes, being one of the most sought after sonic items at the current time, even though they aren't truly classified as official as it has never actually been stated if it was a collab with sega. These shoes are however currently all over places like ebay, supposedly selling for 4-5 figures.

31:39 *i came from the future* to tell you they kinda nerfed them in the final product and to me, while the concept is an A, the final ones ar a C tier. But they do have use, since a lot of Sonic's energy is lost in other dimentions, Nine (Tails, but with 7 extra metal... tails) makes these special shoes for him that contain the energy and grant Sonic his normal abilities. + they adapt to the respective dimension Sonic is in. FOR NOW ON, THERE WILL BE SIGNIFICANT SPOILERS In the forest dimension, he gets shoes and gloves with claws, they have a camouflage design and color pallete, with the added claws that look like something more futuristic, but overall look really cool and are an instant S tier for utility and d r i p. In the water dimension, he gets hover shoes, but they look a lot cleaner, have black and yellow color pallete and an inflated-looking yellow strip at the bottom, B tier. In The Grim, a deserted dimension that Nine claims for himself, Sonic has shoes very reminiscent of the modern standard shoes, but they are purple and have an hexagonal pattern on them, A tier for me. And in Ghost Hill (wich is basically Green Hill but all life is drained and sentient creatures are stuck in a ghostly state at loop, acting like a hologram of sorts) he uses his normal shoes but they are grey and have a grid pattern with "chromatic aberration" effects added. Cursed tier in my opinion

Though I was surprised to see you left out the Light Speed Shoes from SA1 as those are probably my favorite upgrade shoes and are honestly S tier for me. The Lego shoes are very odd, I get there are practical limitations for why only the front and outer sides have printing, but they should have used the same technique done to Finn from the Adventure Time DLC, Finn had his duel mold have blue and black with the socks as printing, rather than the sock as the mold and the shoe the print. If they where trying to take advantage by this also making his souls white, it still doesn't excuse the ugly look.

I think the mario/link shoes are fine. They're simple enough not to detract from the rest of their respective outfits, and on their own; that's the brightest brown they coulda gone with without going beige, like a less shiny milk chocolate. Plus, the link boots' shape is still very sonic like.

Hotdog shoes SUPERMACY!!!! I prefer them too. His feet despite still being stubs, had a sense of structure them, like his foot can actually bend. His modern shoes look soooo stiff

other people have probably said this before, but the 'sock' on sonic's original shoes are actually a folded down cuff and not the sock at all, which is why there's a tongue coming from the mountain climbing shoes. though, like most other things on sonic's design, it's not very consistent.

My favorite Sonic shoe is the version of it from Sonic 06 as bad as that game is you have to admit that the character designs were fire specifically in the CGI cutscenes the in-game models didn't age well but besides that they look great and Sonic shoes did as well more specifically the bottoms of the shoes rather than just plain desired list red shoes with black undersides instead they're uniquely designed white instead of the usual black that current Sonic has an overall is just a pretty cool design
