Chaos in 40k and in fantasy is like nurture vs nature. If I'm not mistaken every chaos marine made the choice to serve chaos, either doing so during the heresy or long after. Some I think might have unintentionally been corrupted by chaos through longstanding contact with chaos artifacts, but the majority becomes chaos warriors of their own free will. Almost every chaos warrior was born into a society entirely dominated by chaos and centered around it, be they Kurgan or Norscan. Norsca as a whole is totally bathed in chaotic energy to the point where the land at certain points starts to defy reason. Very few chose to worship chaos at a later date, a lot of them being wizards from the empire funnily enough. This meme kind of encapsulates that.

honestly it even goes beyond that with chaos in 40k vs fantasy. the gods of fantasy have alway been there, ever present and watching but could only really get into the world after the incident with the poles. The chaos gods in 40k were accidentaly made by mortal after thousands if not millions of years of constant strife and strong emotions, I vaguely remember even khorne being younger than humanity itself.

this is kinda why i prefer fantasy for the argument that 'you can't kill chaos because its a fundamental part of nature' ideal. in 40k i always wonder "where are the warp gods of order, if negative emotions have a chaos god where is the positive ones' in fantasy you have ulric, taal, the good side of the elven pantheon, the nehekaran gods, all of these are shaped by human (or otherwise) worship but clearly have existed in some form even before the old ones, so i can accept the argument that chaos can't be destroyed in warhammer fantasy without drastically changing all of sentient thought, which would kill the gods of order as well. in 40k chaos doesn't really have that. there are clearly times when chaos didn't exist and its surely able to get rid of them, which makes chaos less interesting IMO

They are utterly unkillable one on one with a normal mortal man and shrug off terrible wounds like nothing. The complete despair that an army of state troopers must feel as they hear the steady beat of hundreds of heavy footfalls and rending warcries, along with beating of drums made from human hide and the awful screaming and braying of the unspeakably foul creatures the host drags in its wake. Chaos warriors are utterly devoted to worshipping the dark gods and need no better reason to maraud than to please them and gain a small amount of their favour

(Granted, I suspect at least a few World Eaters come into existence in the Warhammer Fantasy way. You'd be alone in that regard. This franchise's rise in popularity is no coincidence. Most of us new fans coming in are bored and exasperated with all of these fantasy worlds in our video games and movies that are pretty much the same, all these fantasy isekay anime that are pretty much the same, all these fantasy books and comics that are pretty much the same... For me, personally, when I saw a franchise with a loving and caring fan base 30+ years old, 400 books, stacks of videogames, a popular tabletop, an extremely strong, uncensored, unfiltered, balls-to-the-walls, respectable grim dark theme >especially in a time when every other thing gets censored squeaky clean, bland, boring and childish, and corrupted with some stupid political agenda because there's a f**king cultural collapse going on> when I saw something new that was awesome in it's own right and was proud to show it in this day and age, I was intrigued. I saw the missing elements that my media has lacked for so long, so I ran towards it and got everything I missed for so long. And I bet most newcomers have similar stories on how they came to be diehard fans of it in such a short time.

writing like this is also why i love chaos because it feels much more threatening and deeply rooted in sentient thought. chaos in fantasy is the darkside of sentient nature made manifest in the worst ways, sending hoards of followers from the north to kill whoever is around at time, including other chaos followers. they are your darkest fears and desires you may not even know yourself coming to corrupt you into something you couldn't even comprehend. chaos in 40k is warp entities that, in some cases literally are younger than humanity, let alone species like the necrons and eldar who probably are older than all of the chaos gods, that haven't done anything of note in 10k years.

It’s comparing Chaos Marines from 40k to Chaos Warriors from Warhammer Fantasy. The 40k Marines tend to have sad backstories and either joined chaos of their own free will (as revenge against the Emperor) or because they were manipulated into it. Chaos Warriors, on the other hand, tend to be people who were born into chaos worship, who actively revere their gods, and who enjoy doing horrific acts in order to impress their masters.

@@Dave-bd2eo I assume it's because of the idea that the chaos gods have good qualities about them, like khorne also being honorable, etc. I don't think this is true however, but even if it was, this simply makes them more evil, as they choose to purposely cause and feed on negative emotions over positive ones. Nurgle is a good example too, a lot of the meme community treats him like a wholesome big chungus who didnu nuffin, but he actively causes plagues to which he then offers the cure. He causes problems and offers solutions, weighted in his favor. That's basically what loan sharks do lol. Not to mention his daemons, joyfully go around mocking dead plague victims who died in excruciating agony. The imperium, for its many many faults, is the way it is because of chaos. They feed on suffering and make real space terrible because it gives them more food.

Chaos has never been morally ambiguous, not even in the earliest editions. Chaos has always been evil even during fantasy. Sure, Archaon has a fair bit of nuance, but he isn't the embodiment of Chaos as a whole. For every Archaon with complex motives, there are THOUSANDS of Chaos Warriors that just don't care.

If you think about it, Archaon and Abaddon both achieved the same thing: destroy a planet. The difference is that Abaddon destroyed a key planet and almost literally tore the galaxy apart but somehow the Imperium is in BETTER conditions because now they have someone competent leading it; a victory for now might be his downfall for all that know, and now Chaos has more space to ravage than ever and is disjointed, some factions are busier remaking their home planet than actually doing shit, and the shit is still raiding one other planet they really fucking hate but they never destroy it. Archaon, however, destroyed the only known world, only by miracle everything was reset, but as far as he is concerned? He won, that was it, game over.
