I will commend this meteorologist for his forecast of what became Helene a week or more before it started developing in the western Caribbean. Super accurate forecast...unfortunately. Great job.

Where are you?? You & Mr Weatherman I trust the most. Helene surged us in Englewood, FL for 1st time since my grandparents bought our family home in 1978 - ton of houses debris along our street & now Milton coming turning all that into projectiles. If you’re on vacation I apologize - we all deserve a break. Just too many TV weather people who don’t break it down or seem to understand the intricacies.
@kathleencraig38043 ай бұрын
SWFL doesn't need anymore heavy rains floodings...storm surge is impacts impacts impacts that is what is terrifying the floodings. We can handle the tropical disturbances and tropical storms and even low grade hurricanes, what is worry some is the storm surge impacts. We will have to prepare again and again until hurricane season ends.

Ok so lets analyze this forecast for a moment. First of all, this prediction is a full week out. Models get kinda sketchy with that much distance on the run. Will it happen like this? Will the system to the north get slowed down by the Rockies and arrive later or will it speed up through the plains and get there sooner? Dunno. Too many variables for a good forecast here. Second, this is the GFS and Canadian models (extremely similar parameters because one is based off the other), they do better with sparse data points over open ocean. Using them to forecast a hurricane who's entire existence will be in the Gulf of Mexico, is like using a sniper rifle to duck hunt. Doable, but probably not the tool you need. I find it easier to use the NAM model to forecast in the placement and timing when a storm is close to land because of the mid latitude weather interactions which inevitably make a bigger contribution to the situation. Third, you keep mentioning "energy" dropping in to the storm. Well the chart you are using is a 500mb height and vorticity plot. Any energy dropping in is going to be from an upper level baroclinic trough, which is pretty much the definition of wind shear and low pressure. Not exactly what a baby hurricane wants for lunch. Its far more likely that any interaction from that would result in a system getting ripper apart, much like the chut does in the middle of the Atlantic. Overall, the models are seeing what they are seeing but the analysis and explanation for whats going on doesn't make much sense to me. Only time will tell.
