I think you're mistakening being edgy with being serious, because, from how I see these characters, Espio is just serious, while Shadow is just Sonic after losing his friends. Instead of being happy all the time, he's just depressed, but still trying to be a good guy, and also not being able to trust everyone, because of his tragic past. Too bad SEGA completely ruined these characters in the modern era. Imo Shadow should only be edgy when he gets angry, but really angry, and not as a joke or anything.

A few minutes after Charmy And Espio finished beating up vector. Knuckles,Mighty, Ray, Julie-Su, Saffron, And Matilda got back from their assignment which was something about infiltrating a Mafia Owned Shopping Mall which meant that the girls spent most of the mission shopping for clothes as girls usually do. And after espio and charmy told them what they had done to vector they spent the rest of the day playing video games and beating up Vector some more. THE END. (Oh and by the way the Mafia Owned shopping mall was shut down for being a mafia front)
