Excellent video, thanks! Had to take mine apart today, went ahead and got another yesterday due to the timeframe I had didn’t allow for delays. My pump was running constantly and had little pressure at all. Think I found the problem but work in progress right now. My little pump screen down in there appears to have quite a bit of gunk in it. Mine is actually made on and can’t be removed unless you just cut the screen out which I am afraid to do at this point. Think I got it cleaned but fixing to put together and rinse with tank cleaner and probably run some cleaner thru the whole system and see how it does

Thank you for the information in video! My Chapin sprayer was set up differently than your model, but I tightened down all the screws that were loose and the surging from the sprayer stopped. I think most important for anyone trying this is to tighten the screw we’re wired are. Hope this helps anyone and everyone how it helped me!

Outstanding! My Chapin Sprayer (63985 4-Gallon Wide Mouth 20V Battery Backpack Sprayer Powered by Black & Decker) surged yesterday. Most annoying. Got the sprayer in May 2018. Rather than the screw you found, my sprayer has a set screw with an Allen socket accepting a 2mm wrench in the same location but accessed through a hole. I took apart the next assembly to discover the set screw depresses a spring. Perhaps in the 3 years of use, the spring in the assembly got tired or wear opened the dimensions in which the spring assembly sits. Naturally, I could not resist running the set screw in and out. When I put it all together and ran the set screw in, the unit sprayed properly with a load of water. Quite gratifying.

I have been told that upon initial purchase of this particular sprayer, to remove the collar & tighten both bolts to the two hoses, as the QA of the company does a fairly poor job of tightening them when assembling them & this will prevent a lot of leakage later. Also, tightening up that screw by a full turn, as needed later sure seems to be good maintenance, as well. Since the consumer will get stuck with any returned machine, as to paying the full return postage on them, these two maintenance steps sure seem to be the best remedy for fixing the major issues with this product. Me, I plan to replace or at least cut down that overly long screw they put the collar on with. The buyer needs to always remember that these are not really more than for home use, so the quality can be questionable, but the pricing still makes them a great investment for a tool to use, as long as you know the fixes to most often correct any issues. (I too have purchased many a spare part that ultimately just ended up in that old mason jar of rusty screws that you have kept on the garage shelf for the past 20 years, just in case you ever needed one in a pinch. If I ever got back the moola I spent on them, I'd probably be living in the style of the rich and famous, huh?) :-) Nice video to learn from. Thanks for sharing it.

James, thank you for that information. I've had my sprayer for 7 years, and this year the first time I turned it on I had Roundup running down my leg and into my shoe. I landed on this video, and because of your comment the first thing I did was to take the cover off and check the hose clamps. Sure enough, the one for the wand hose looked like it had barely been tightened at all. I fixed that and the leak stopped. I wonder how it could have not leaked for so long. Or maybe I just didn't notice. If that's the case, it explains why I haven't had any weeds growing in my sneakers. 😄

I wish I knew this, I had the Wal-Mart brand and it started pulsating after a few months. I just returned it under warranty and got a new one. The replacement one also started giving problems as the pressure went to half within a few months and had to be returned again. These sprayers are good if they don't give problems as it stops all your yard work and you have to transfer the fluids to a manual sprayer.

He passed away in 2023 but he was really old, had arthritis and cancer. Poor guy was a mess but he loved soaking up the sun.
