In 1973, I was 16 years old. Watching this video and seeing the photo on the wall of the old creamery brought back some memories for me. I remember Dave Chapman passing me ice cream through the little door on the side of the freezer wall of the original creamery. I can recall, in the summer months, picking up 28 brown paper-wrapped bundles, each bundle consisting of three half gallons and putting them in the back seat and passenger seat of a VW Bug. Next, I would high tail it down the six miles from Markdale to Flesterton, where my Dad has his pharmacy, Bob Avis Drugs. He used Chapmans’ ice cream as a loss leader to increase customer flow into his store. Yes, in 1973, half a gallon of ice cream sold retail was between $0.97 and $0.99/half gallon, the same price my Dad paid for it (loss leader). What is still outstanding is that in some stores in 2024, you can still find the block packaging of this ice cream 50+ years later. It would be fascinating to see a documentary of all the hardships and ruthless competitors David and Penny had to overcome to grow the company. If you see Chapman Ice Cream products in Vancouver or St. John’s, be assured they were manufactured in Markdale, Ontario and trucked right across Canada. It's a remarkable Canadian success story, and I am proud that my dad played a minor role in the company's beginning.

Chapman was the first icecream I had when I came to Canada 3yrs ago. My only favourite ice cream brand. There Super Premium Plus is my new go to icecream. I was originally not a fan of caramel flavor stuff, however, there SPP caramel has changed my mind. Chocolate fudge, strawberry shortcake, caramel, cookie dough and cherry shortcake are my favourites.

Chapman’s makes fantastic ice cream products. Perhaps the freshest and best tasting ice cream anywhere. As a corporate citizen they are fantastic. They have strongly supported many local causes and when their factory burned down the family continued to pay their employees. The only ice cream products I buy is Chapman’s

Give them credit where credit is due. What have done after the fire is a great story. They do go through a lot of employees for numerous reasons. As they are the only game in town they tend to take advantage of their employees.

Why is the Chapmans sugar free ice cream, double the price of regular ice cream

Probably because of all the additional steps that go into making it sugar free and lactose free while still tasting like ice cream. Involves using enzymes and expensive sugar substitutes etc. Would also take much longer to make overall which cuts into profit from other flavours.
