I was a young AFLCIO city/county area president and Barack Obama came to town and his people wanted to have him shake my hand on camera that same day. I rushed to the barbershop to professional up my Mohawk haircut and I went to the local state university and had to wait for five hours in a broom closet because the camera people couldn’t find a good corner to have us walk around talking. Just when I was about to give up at 11pm the Prez shows and pops into the broom closet with myself and a Nurse union rep and he asks me “was I your guy?” And I replied “now you are but I was originally going for Dennis Kucinich or Howard Dean” and the Prez gets visibly pissed off and says “Then I guess this is your big break” and director says action and the tone instantly shifts and the Prez cheerfully asks the superficial banal stuff about the local sports teams and the weather. Afterwards my people were all shocked that I didn’t kiss ass but that’s not the union culture I was brought up in and I knew Obama had a pretty weak position on labor anyway

ACORN was the activist wing of the Dem Party going back to the 70s. They focused on registering voters and Getting Out the Vote during election season. Obama came up through ranks in the early 90s. ACORN's efforts directly helped carry Obama to the party nom in 2008. Obama gets elected, ACORN has a couple big scandals including voter registration fraud and more importantly James O'Keefe/Project Veritas used some hidden camera footage and deceptive editing to make it look like ACORN employees were helping a pimp create a brothel with immigrant children. Congress pulls funding. Obama immediately cuts all ties and the organization closes in 2010. This is all despite the fact the video was 100% fake. A very obvious fake too. Really stupid time in the media/politics.
