I have NEVER understood why some fans go so far. Introvert that I am at times, if I see someone famous---a little or a lot---doing some kind of activity, let's say with their family, even tho I may never get another chance---I will do 1 of 2 things: Either I will walk up to them and ask if they are who I think, asking for a picture or autograph, and if they seem uncomfortable or tell me they're with family---I will apologize and walk away; OR I will simply let them have their moment and walk away. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Thank you for sharing this with us! And in spite of your "Storytime" antics--you do NOT deserve to be treated the same. You are truly a great human being and thank you for sharing your experiences with us. ❤

even from the view point that fans are who pay her bills (which is a statement that lacks nuance, but still) if my boss, who directly signs my checks, followed me home from work to talk to me, or insisted on posting a picture of us on the internet, that would be CLEAR harassment. there is no reason for those types of things ever, no matter what kind of relationship you have with the person

Every celebrity deserves space and respect. Even if they “asked for it” by becoming famous. They’re still human. I have a friend who was in a few shows. She gave me a whole new perspective on this type of stuff. Now i respect celebrities even more if that was even possible. Do I get attached to celebrities in unhealthy ways sometimes? Definitely. Alllllll the time. But would I ever treat them as less than a human if I met them? Never.

It’s such an important conversation, such an important one. Parasocialism has always been a thing with ‘celebrities’ I know but I feel like it’s gotten even more accessible-? Idk if that’s the word for it, but easier to fall into, more commonplace with the internet and it’s easy access to people. I’m honestly so proud of her to set boundaries, and I really hope people will respect those. And thank you for talking about it as well, that line about ‘not being able to go to your usual church’ like hit me in the gut man. It’s good to see you talking about it and offering your perspective. Great video I really enjoyed it

As a disabled person who constantly gets eyes aimed at them because some humans don't apparently know what a disabled person looks like, it frustrates me to know end. I've had people come up to me and push past me because they want to get through or I've had some instances where someone pushed my wheelchair without my consent. I've had people bump into the back of me and then blame me because they got hurt when it was them who most likely weren't paying attention. I relate so much to having the anxiety to go out. People don't understand how hard it is to go out and do what you need to do in your everyday life regardless if you're celebrity or just an average normal day person. People think it's so easy. It's not. For some people it is a constant battle, it shouldn't have to be like that for them. Everyone should be able to live their lives normally to the best of their abilities. All we want to do is simply exist like everyone else on the planet. Being a celebrity or being just an average everyday person should not matter when it comes to safety and privacy. Everyone is allowed that right. Everybody is all human at the end of the day, it should not matter where you stand on the scale of classes. We're all humans wanting to coexist peacefully with each other. Lovely video as always.❤

It makes me happy to see KZbinrs (especially with Chappell having her start on KZbin) coming to her defense and supporting her, and it angers me how much people are easily just ignoring and turning on her, and not listening to her words. Why do we only care about people and their safety when it’s too late. And I find it interesting too because so much of fan culture has changed and celebrities have made an active effort to protect theirselves, from Olivia Rodrigo doing a virtual meet and greet, to Fall out Boy barely doing any meet and greets and also leaving social media and not engaging much in discourse, because people, “fans” or so violent and horrible. Like, this is sad this has to be a discussion

I was diagnosed with autism (PDD-NOS) at 3 and a half years old. A lot of crazy things happened in my childhood involved with getting my disability figured out. I'm 20 years old now and slowly but surely, I'm starting to handle things on my own getting into the working world and the adult life. I'm working a part-time job at an assisted living facility and I'm fitting in okay with being a server. My confidence is slowly building up since I had help getting the job. So, you should know that you're not alone in dealing with any anxiety related thing. And yeah, people, who are famous in whatever way, are allowed to have personal space and privacy. They're normal people, just like their fans. (I'm a fan who just has an account on KZbin so I could be able to comment on videos, including this video) 😊

As humans I don't think we are necessarily equiped to be confronted with such big groups of people knowing us and being treated as "a prop" because someone estimated that they "know" you enough for it or that you "earned" this kind off treatment by being famous is not okay. Yup. The people getting mad over it need to take a good LONG hard look it the mirror. Maybe if the insinuation that feeling entitled to a stranger (or anyone’s) time and space makes someone a weirdo and/or creep is deeply upsetting to an individual, they ought to consider they might (probably definitely) be part of the problem. Wild concept for those types: your freedom ends where another persons’ begins. This doesn’t stop being true when someone is famous.

i think i have the opposite problem: i get so self-conscious of not crossing their boundaries that i might try to avoid them entirely. i’d give too much of a wide berth as to not make them uncomfortable. i do want to tell people like you how much your work means to me, but i’m nervous that i would make them uncomfortable. i’m so terrified of being the villain in their horror stories that i swing the opposite way: streaming their music or going to an event they’re having is suddenly an invasion of their privacy in my warped thought process. i’ve felt guilty for even acknowledging that they exist sometimes. it becomes counterintuitive. i don’t know, this is just my fun little anxiety-ridden train of thought. does anyone else feel this way?

Another example is the Speed going to Norway (I think it was Norway) incident. He was so popular that he had no space at all. Trapped in a store and being mobbed is terrifying and no one would have the common sense to listen to him and give him personal space and let him out just because he's a celebrity. He was being attacked. Literally someone was selling a piece of his hair online. It sucks that celebrities can't live a normal life just because a whole part of the world knows them.

Hey Thomas, as someone who’s been a quiet fan of yours for years, I’d like to know even with many positive experiences where are you now with fans coming to say hi ? Do you still feel personally comfortable? Do you want to be left alone when out alone and with friends? Something that Chappel has me thinking about a lot from her sharing is, as much as I’d like to say a simple hello, fan of your work, even that is too much and bothersome and anxiety provoking. Just because at one point a public figure was okay with people saying hello, that can quickly change.

yeah, I see that on the Kpop community a lot. even if the industry puts that incentive of parasocial relationships (fan - artist), there's a need to put limits on it since there are a lot of creeps (such as sasaengs, they're like ot1 even if it's a group) and "fans" that breach the personal space for the sake of their "fan experience". there's limits for fans and that's why I choose to not talk to celebrities in a day-to-day setting, even if I am aware of who they are.

Thank you for your input on such an important topic. I do enjoy meeting people I look up to, but my rule is if I see someone famous in public is to leave them be. I might smile at them but I'll only really go up if I'm feeling brave and they don't look super busy. Even then I try to keep my interactions short so I don't take up too much of their free time. I don't know what they've got going on. That's not my business. Neither is where they live, how to contact outside of official channels ....harassing them, their friends or their family (and I'm sorry you and yours and other people have had to deal with that)

I believe that it is very, very important for a creator to set rules and boundaries as early as possible. Communication on what is ok and what is not when being recognised in public is essential in, in my opinion, every popular content creator's life. You are incredibly lucky to have such a generally understanding and supportive audience who will honor these boundaries. With Chappel Roan's tiktok spreading the message that so many ccs have yet to address, I sincerely hope that this shows fans that creators are in fact people and should be treated as such when seen in public. I think the best adressal of this before Roan was Ranboo who talked about it to much more of an extent in one of their streams (i dont remember which one.) Content creators are people. That's the most important thing you need to remember.

There is a point with celebrity adoration where people stop seeing a "celebrity" as a person with a life, and more of a "treasure" that in essence still objectifies a person by not treating them as human who needs/wants/deserves space and privacy. As someone who is trying to create who ducks/cringes/freezes in front of a camera, let alone in front of a crowd, hearing the extremes can be.....hard.....(I don't blame celebrities for going into public in disguises!) but it is also very nice to hear that those are the minority for you! thank you for an honest video ✨✨

As someone with anxiety, I am TERRIFIED of talking to strangers. Even if I see someone I know on the street, I’ll probably avoid them unless it’s one of my very best friends. I can’t imagine having all that happen, but I’m glad y’all are speaking up for yourselves. Stay safe

A mini rant coming up here- I understand, this has happened to me because even though I’m a faceless KZbinr, I’ve revealed my voice so now when I talk to people at school, someone will randomly yell from like, across the hallway “ARE YOU VEDDIRA?!!” And I get scared.. because I don’t want people to make fun of me for my content. My content is in a community where it gets a HORRIBLE reputation, and I don’t want to be othered because of the community I’m in. And it’s mostly a minority who make the community I’m in look bad.

I’ve never asked for a photo with a celebrity. I have done things like “Excuse me, I just wanted to say how much I like your work. Thanks.” and moved on…

im sorry to hear what you have gone through yourself though I'm glad to hear its the minority of interactions. Anyone with any sort of platform doesn't deserve to have their privacy invaded and I think it's rather dehumanizing to think that someone deserves or should get to know things about someone that are no where on their social media platforms. I hope in the future everyone can be more mindful about it, thank you for sharing your experience Thomas! 💛

I love seeing celebrities set concrete boundaries with their fans. It lets them know YES there is a relationship there but not on a personal connection level 👏👏👏 well talked thomas

I’m sorry you went through all that. I have anxiety too. That sounds really scary. Famous people deserve privacy and respect too. It’s still just a job like any other. People say they should just get used to it because it’s part of the job. I think that’s so entitled. Stalking and harassment should not be normalized.

Thank you for making this video. Sometimes those of us who don’t have to deal with this stuff can get a little ahead of ourselves and forget that while meeting someone famous may be a special occasion for us, getting approached by random people is just another Tuesday for you guys. Clearly setting these boundaries is a good reminder to not be weird about it if we ever run into you 😅

every and I mean EVERY PERSON WHO HAS CREATED ANYTHING FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO SEE SHOULD BE RECOGNISED AS A HUMAN BEING AND THEIR BOUDARIES SHOULD BE MET. And to be completely honest, if I saw anyone that I love or purplish in public I’d whisper sheepishly to whoever I was with and just quickly run away but that’s a personal anxiety thing 😭😂. BOUNDARIES PEOPLE. MF 👏 FKING 👏 BOUNDARIES 👏

honestly i love that she's setting the precedent of how she wants her fans to interact with her now versus after having some sort of really bad mental breakdown. she's 100% right and if we are _actually_ fans of her we'd respect her now set boundaries instead of feeling entitled and complaining

4 years since an actual episode of sanders sides...if you don't want to work on it, then don't work on it. It's not fair to profit off of your fans who are here for an empty promise while using their love for the series you won't work on, you then use that hope and use it to make incorrect quotes and other stuff nobody is asking you. Except your patreon. Idk if yall were there but I remember when incorrect quotes, bloopers, certain ads and aside videos coming early. Now it's the main content videos.

not the person i thought would talk about this but after being in the fanbase for nearly a decade im not surprised. even in tweets or comments, seeing people demand more content or speak parasocially are scary! the art creators make are gifts to us, not necessities, and nobody owes anyone anything except basic human kindness

I genuinely feel like you should just leave celebrities alone. I just think it’s weird to approach strangers regardless of how much you think you know them. I’ve seen people I watch internet videos of in public and I just try to place them and then move on. No need to approach unless they’re at an event where they expect to meet fans.

Ohhhhh I really, really like your unique take on this discussion being someone who used to go up to people. Admittedly, while I enjoyed many of your vines, the Story Time ones always gave me a little sense of anxiety at the beginning of each one. I always got the sense that you cleared them with afterwards, and I believe you'd said before that you do, but it's nice to hear the confirmation now, just for anxiety sake, ahaha! But despite that, I don't think these are comparable, and I don't think you deserve it karmatically. Yes, going up to strangers and filming them is scary for them in the moment, but for the most part, this is a random and wild one-time experience and more akin to a jumpscare (perhaps with technology as prevalent as it is, that number might be higher then 'one' but for the sake of argument I'm going to stick with 'one' ahaha). People going up to *you* are doing it because they know you parasocially and want to interact with you. Once you film the vine, I assume you just walk away after a single conversation. I believe the people who call you out want to talk for as long as possible. My two-cents is that they are similar, but not entirely comparable! And I hope you absolve yourself of any guilt there might be. This has been fun to think about!! :) I dunno if I've ever commented on a video before despite watching for all these years, but I was really impassioned by the idea. I'm a huge advocate for celebrity privacy and freedom. Y'all deserve peace of mind just like we do.

what’s always made me mad is people saying she doesn’t “appreciate us” or having and attitude like she owes us something. Like bro she did her job. She performs, she made the music. She doesn’t “owe” u crap. She’s a musician, she makes music, she’s not a cardboard cutout for you to harass and take photos w/

Im sorry you have to go through all this, Thomas..! I’m glad that you had mostly pleasant experiences with your fans, but now i feel like a small group (including me) of your fans are definitely ten times more scared to approach, because we may think we come on too strong, or we could be like, the 10th fan you’ve met in the span of a few hours, and we don’t want to deter you from going out anymore… other than that, I do hope your fans treat you with more decent human respect in the future..!

I feel like that edict that is common in conventions for cosplays should apply to influencer/celebrities, if there eating let them eat, if there already in a convention let them talk, if they say no that ok ect, I just think ppl forget both celebrities and influences are ppl and have boundaries

I've thought about this for the longest time, and you're so kind about your experiences but you are 1000% allowed to feel the way you feel, I'm so sorry you've experienced this. Your content has affected me so opposite to the way you've described, and you deserve so much better. I hope you are able to be just a person with your friends, in your world. You're a human, and I hope you enjoy that in the foreseeable future. Your characters are separate from that entirely, you are you, and that is enough.
