Chappell Roan DID have a health crisis after being dropped from her label: that's when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She's spent time in in-patient facilities and outpatient programs, and she's probably still paying for that unless she was lucky enough to be on her parents' insurance. This has affected her personally in a potentially catastrophic way, and while I'm not glad for what she's experienced I'm so proud of her for standing up for other artists. She's absolutely correct that the industry needs to be restructured for the benefit of struggling artists.

Let's fight for that world, together! Join the musicians union! Some of us in AFM are organizing alongside other unions and organizations to fight for universal healthcare, and the more unionized workers standing together in solidarity the better! While it's not doable next month or next year, it is achievable by 2028! But we have to do the work now. Regardless if you'll join that struggle, at least join for the benefits you gain and knowing that even just by joining the musicians union you help give more power and voice to musicians, collectively.

True that right now it's mostly session musicians, orchestra musicians, etc. in AFM right now, but more and more freelance musicians are joining AFM, including recording artists, rock bands, singer-songwriters, etc. Like with any other union, there's power in numbers. The word needs to get out that AFM is great for freelance musicians, too, and with more members we can help win much better economic conditions for musicians and join with other unions in the fight for things like universal healthcare.

She probably doesn't know about the musicians union, the American Federation of Musicians! There is power in the musicians union, and so much more so if someone like Roan encouraged musicians to join. There is such heavy anti-union propaganda in this country that also leads people to dismiss AFM if they even hear of it. Our union is a threat to the rich and exploitative music industry bosses, so it benefits them if songwriters, recording artists, bands, EDM producers, support musicians, etc. stay divided. We need numbers and solidarity to win better healthcare for musicians!

@@donaldmarcato7003 And they would be eligible for subsidized health insurance via the ACA most likely among other options. Also, Taco Bell is legally required to offer health insurance. Or just in general there are options to get artists coverage that aren't on the industry, namely unions. I'm spiritually aligned with Chappell on this, but the whole "they're making them (the labels) money" argument is very precarious and also maybe not true for the artists that would actually need this coverage anyway.

Obviously this is not a problem for artists from any developed country other than the U.S., since the U.S. is the only developed country that does not provide Universal Health Coverage to their citizens. If the record labels were to provide Health Insurance to their artists, they would just factor in the cost in the contracts with the artist, so it wouldn't theoretically help or hurt the musicians financially, however, it would be a good thing for the artist just to make sure they actually get their health insurance instead of deciding not to purchase it.

Musicians are generally not unionized like actors and writers because the profession works entirely differently than either of those. Writers produce a product that is used as part of a process, and produce that product as a group effort, which is how the vast majority of professions with unions work, so unionization can function on a similar blueprint. Actors do not produce a product so much as they provide their skilled labor or expertise as a service, more like a car detailer or electrician. However, the vast majority of screen actors are on the same rung on the ladder (in terms of pay/benefits) and are often needed as contractors for larger companies. This means they have the numbers to ask for minimums, and large enough business targets to unionize against. While most musicians are on the same rung like actors, the large labels do not need a large variety of musicians for their productions, which are a lot smaller than movie productions in terms of the "talent". Most musicians work with venues for one time events, meaning any unionization would need to happen near the top with non-indepedent labels' musicians banding together. The problem here is scale; a union of that makeup would be far smaller in comparison to the employer, and represent a far smaller percentage of the employee base, than any other union. Unions need numbers, and large labels just don't need large numbers of artists. A strike would harm an artist far more than the label, especially without 100% buy-in from artists AND fans. Ultimately, the best way for this to happen would be a coordinated effort against UMG that includes non-musician employees.
@Ryan-yi6jf
@Ryan-yi6jf Сағат бұрын
There is a musicians union for any musician in the US and Canada. As you say "unions need numbers." Yes. How do we get those numbers? People need to break free of the incredibly strong anti-union propaganda that keeps musicians (and workers across the board) divided and completely ignorant about the benefits and power in joining a union, including the musicians union, AFM. I encourage you to join. Get your band mates and musician friends to join. You can start building a retirement with your music work, gain better job security, get higher paying gigs, and be in solidarity with unionized musicians everywhere fighting for healthcare and better economic conditions for musicians. I hope you consider it, or if you're not a musician please spread the word :)

@@Ryan-yi6jf Right, but I think his point was moreso that in our hybrid system there is a sort of logic to how coverage is obtained and idk if the argument for the labels specifically (as opposed to a union) providing health insurance is convincing. I think if she understood the system more it would've been a more general call to action. I feel like she kind of detracted from the issue with the way she went about it.

I'm not trying to be an a-hole when I say this, but if anyone can afford their own personal healthcare, it's a rich and successful pop star. And I know she's probably speaking for the smaller indie artists who don't have that platform, but tbh healthcare should be a right for everyone, especially the poorest of the poor. My family doesn't even try to go to the hospital when we get sick because nobody can afford to even see a doctor these days, even with healthcare through jobs. But if healthcare for all became a thing, they would at least have basic coverage and could then maybe make their own choice on a different plan. I'm not sure if that's how it would work, but I wish they'd at least try fucking SOMETHING.

why the industry won't support working artists via health care/etc, is because for each individual working artist willing to stand up to the man and demand a fair shake, there are 100 hungry to starving artists ready to step up and take their place for peanuts - greed and exploitation stomps out collective bargaining and the blood letting that ensues is what fuels the american dream - this is the way

I work in film and tv - we've bargained with the studios to get health insurance and it's good health insurance. The only issue is we have to hit a minimum number of hours to be covered and only for 6 months at a time. As good as it is for WGA and SAG to have made deals with their strikes, it pushed all of the work out of the US, so we've basically been sitting here for 2 years without work, meaning we've lost our health insurance. I'd love for the music industry to cover their artists, but it's the billionaires that take work out of the union jurisdictions and out of the country that are the problem, specifically, it's the US system of privatized insurance that's the problem.

For anyone who doesn't know. Not everyone who is in the music industry is a millionaire even pop sounding artists aren't that rich these because of streaming if you want to make a million dollars you have to have a song on the #1 spot for a week on Spotify pop charts, there are other genres besides pop and hip hop

i actually don't think it'd be very difficult to connect the class interests of artists with every day workers (who are ultimately the consumers of the commodities produced by the music and entertainment industry). these people in my opinion are proletariat or working class people. they work for a wage and like ant said they live paycheck to paycheck. they have very little bargaining power and in a lot of ways they have to sacrifice their health to continue their career (the kind of working conditions a 1920s miner from appalachia would have to worry about). they're workers, simple, so the labels need to fucking pay up the costs to treat these people like the human beings they are. ultimately they are the very people that the corporate label needs... not the other way around! which funnily enough is the case for all workers under capitalism

Sadly, and I hope it doesn’t happend, they gonna make things harder for her because she can become a voice to unionize the music industry. Probably they’re gonna make things harder for her or make fake rumors to take away her credibility. I will stand with her

the US definitely needs a total healthcare overhaul, no question about it. but is the billionaire really the best one to look to as an example of someone who best deserves free healthcare

Musicians, join the musicians union! American Federation of Musicians. Reach out to the AFM chapter in your area! We are fighting for better pay, working conditions, and healthcare, etc. right now. And outside of these struggles there are many benefits to being in the union right now, including building a retirement for yourself and better job security with your music work.

There's very few artists my snobby ass will admit deserve all their success in the mainstream. Chappell Roan is one of em. Singlehandedly making white girl pop actually fun again.

Also, while I see her point, we really should be looking at the government for health care for everyone. We live in the richest country in the world but we pay more for shitty health care than any other 1st world country
