Frank Ocean finessing Def Jam made labels much more restrictive for other artists. 😢

Am I the only one that doesn’t like the new Andre 3K style? I don’t even count New Blue Sun as an album, let alone a Andre 3K album, it’s a flute tape.
@Bucatiniceviche3 сағат бұрын
But if he hasn’t released an album since 2006 then why does he all of a sudden care about albums counting towards his deal? Motherfucker you weren’t dropping music anyways. If it’s such a bad contract how come they let you go 18 god damn years without dropping an album…? Can anyone else see this? I’m not a hater just frustrated because I love 3 stacks

If it doesn’t count, who gets the money that it makes? It’s probably not a huge amount but if it doesn’t count then they don’t have a legitimate claim to the profits IMO. Or do they get to have a cake and fuck it too?

Fantano, I find it highly disrespectful of you to refer to Mr 3000 as 'it'. And for the record, he is a very intelligent male and can count very high

It's the fault of Frank Ocean for the stair building album he used to help get off of Def Jam

This doesn't really sound like a conservative progressive issue it's just people like music and that they don't really pay too much attention to the words sometimes. Andre 3000 made hey ya and that's a story about somebody going through issues with his girlfriend or break up but because it has a happy tune you don't really notice it

This is his first album in like 20 years. Even if it doesn't "count," my question is... does it really matter at this point? At the rate he's going, he'll never finish his contract anyway.

So the question is... how does it affects him? I mean, it doesn't count, but it got all the money machine support, the album is out and got recognition. Isn't it actually great that by not counting it, already makes the album even more special in his discography and proves his point at not making a hip hop album? I think is total win for him.
@MaraRhodus4 сағат бұрын
90% is genuinely so odd to me… Like, asking for an album to maybe have 1-2 songs (hell, I’ll be a little generous and say maybe even a 1/3 of the album) that could be easy singles or like staples of party playlists seems fairly reasonable, but putting that on an artist who’s known for being experimental is crazy

I'm surprised that stacks still has a contract to fulfill. Hés acting like he doesn't with these album droughts. Rappers used to make double albums specifically to get from under the contract as soon as possible.

I feel like that clause is exclusive to Andre cause he is also known for making shots in the dark like Love Below. Not saying that Album wasn’t good but I remember when it came out I bought it on release day and thought huh 🤔

Epic wants to still be his label when he eventually releases his (theoretical) big hip hop comeback album. If the jazz albums count, then he'll burn through his required releases, be able to leave Epic and go somewhere else with a better contract and then release his big hip hop comeback album and Epic won't benefit

It’s get even worse it you imagine that an actual Andre rap album in 2020’s could’ve been be so experimental that it wouldn’t meet the clause 90% similiarity requirement either.

I don’t know if it matters. If his contract didn’t have that clause, they’d find some other way to invalidate it. Unless you have astronomical influence, your lawyers are going to be worse then their lawyers, and something in your 50 page contract (or the 50+ years of BS legal precedent) is going to allow the corporate lawyers to get their way. The second lawyers are defining music genres you’ve already lost
