Dr. Jim, I just wanted to say thank you for being such an incredible teacher. I recently took an intro to microbiology online here at a community college and struggled immensely in the beginning. Although I found microbiology to be interesting, I did not get as much out of it until I found your lectures. I watched all your lecture videos with my studying. You made taking an online class much more enjoyable. I recently took my final and thank you for helping me get an A in this class!

As for the Theory vs. Law concept, the way I think of it is this: a) A theory is just any model one invents to compute predictions. The goodness of a theory is the same as the goodness of a model. b) An *accepted* theory (accepted by the scientific majority) is one that has stood the test of peer review and criticism and won consensus. c) As time goes on, theories either evolve or go extinct. d) Humans have (possibly for the first time in the Universe) began an unusually transcendental evolution path that has allowed us to turn a curve and begin to develop at an exponential rate mentally. As a result, most of our big theories today are of the type that they will never be "disproven" because they imperically model very tightly within their given domain. They will only be expanded or adjusted. This is true of the Standard Model of Quantum Mechanics, of Chemistry, and of much of Microbiology by extension. To the extent the theory still has conjectures that are equally or better matched by other conjectures, it remains a theory. e) A law is an observation, with minimum interpretation, and so free of any alternative conjectures for any of its parts. This is usually achieved through intentional vagueness and limited statements, which is the case in the Law of Gravity, which simply states, "there's this phenomenon, right? I mean, you all feel it. Let's call it something." The Law of Gravity is simply the part of the theory that tells you "there's this thing.." but not the part that tells you, "and here's the complete and total equation." Newton's equation for gravity got modified by Einstein later to improve it's accuracy over a greater domain. But it's still probably not complete. So that part is a theory and not a Law, per se. But the part that just says, "Let's call this thing we experience 'Gravity'" is free from refutability as it's merely the naming of a common, self-evident *Observation*.

At 8:20, the diagram of the origins of microorganisms may be wrong. In the sense it says that the earth formed 15 billion years ago. I dont know about you but I've heard that the universe is about 13.7 billion years old, and the earth probably around 4.5 billion years according to geological analysis and analysis on galactic motion, microwave background radiation and a few other things. Minor mistake, we all make them.
