I remember reading chapters 16 and 17 out loud to my mom as she was making dinner. When I said, "It was Quirrell," she stopped what she was doing and said, "WHAT!!??" One of the best plot twists I've ever experienced.

I've always argued that Harry can't see Thestrals at first because he didn't actually witness the attack, and the memory triggered by the Dementors is not his own worst memory; it's Voldemort's from the bit of soul inside him. So then Harry's uniquely affected so badly by the Dementors because they're acting on both souls

I would have to go back and re-read but I was pretty sure there was a passage in one of the books where you’re in voldemorts head during the attack and Harry does indeed see his mother fall down. I remember him thinking James a fool for trying to fight him without a wand, thinking weapons could be discarded even for a moment. He describes Harry as laughing as if he thinks it’s a game and then he starts crying when he sees Voldemort’s face is not his father’s and Voldemort hates the noise, casts the spell and boom. So I think it’s less that he didn’t witness the death more that he didn’t understand what had happened when he saw it. Having that moment of “oh my god this person is dead!” Is different than being able to look back at the event as something sad. It’s that click of watching someone go from alive to dead and understanding the gravity in that moment that allows you to see thestrals. I wonder if it would work to see a beloved pet die.

I think Dumbledore didn't know about the invisibility cloak until James was an adult in the order, and later lent it to him, and when he realized he had it he was like "This explains so much". If he knew at the moment James was in school, he'd probably have known about the Map, too, and he definitely didn't know about the map, as we find out in GoF when Crouch mentions it to Dumbledore

If Neville went with them, one would be infinitely stuck in the potion chamber. Remember? One forward, one back. /j Honestly, it would not be much interesting video... Neville immediately knows about the DS, Hermione lits the fire, trial passed more easily. Flying keys then - Neville stands around and waits for Harry to catch it. Chess puzzle - Neville stands instead of one piece and lets himself be commanded by Ron. He might capture something, but ultimately... it is on Ron. Troll - he walks around it. Potions puzzle - Harry passes on, either Neville or Hermione gets back to warn Dumbledore, the other one waits for eternity (until Dumblie arrives). Trials done, video done. It is not really that captivating video concept

Here’s a thought. We know chocolate has healing powers because of Lupin and the dementors. What if sweets are magically healing in general? It seems that whenever Harry winds up in the hospital wing he gets sweets as gifts. After one of the dementor lessons Lupin gives Harry a butterbeer (also sweet). Perhaps the reason Dumbledore always has sweets as his password is because sweets in general, not just chocolate, have an often overlooked healing magic? Thoughts?

That's a pretty cool thought. I've always thought the chocolate/butterbeer was effective because sugar and fat make the brain release endorphins, so it was effective against dementors who basically bring on an intense and sudden depression, but it's nice to think that sugar might have other magical healing properties as well.

It seems like in this case as well, chocolate was used to help cheer her up after going through a harrowing ordeal, so the endorphins logic works for that too. Maybe we can look at it not so much that sugar has healing properties that are overlooked, but that it has healing magic so strong that even us muggles have noticed and studied it :)

I think that the flaw in Dumbledore's plan in this first instance was that he never thought that Voldemort was literally on the back of Quirrel's head. Dumbledore suspected that he was up to something, but I really think that if he had known that Voldemort was literally on the back of one of his teacher's heads, he would have had Voldemort captured in some way or means without a moments hesitation.

The flaw in Dubmbledore’s plan: was he was trying to force fate into a chamber… Philosopher’s stone is used as bait to lure Voldemort… then Voldemort uses Ginny to lure Harry to the chamber of secrets… Peter is used to lure out the Prisoner of Azkaban… The Goblet of Fire is used as bait to lure Harry to the grave yard… The order of the Phoenix members are used to lure Harry to the Minitsry… The Half-blood Prince lures into a false sense of security… Horcruxes lure Harry to success, while the Deathly Hallows lure Voldemort to his Doom…

I meant by the author as a thematic plot point… Luring is a key element of the Harry Potter series… and Sirius knew Peter was alive, which is why he escaped: becoming The Prisoner of Azkaban.

The Baby Boom in real life the west had after WW2 (which let's face it Voldemort basically wizard h*tler) didn't take place immediately in 46 since rebuilding took a but, not until 1949 to 1950 did the Boom actually start. So I'd think that the First Years during Order and Half Blood are possibly the between war Boom Post book 7 The Trios kids would be the new Baby Boomers of the Wizarding World Slava Ukraina

Quirrell is the Johann of Harry Potter. For those who are unaware, Johann was a character in the How to Train Your Dragon tv series Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, and Race to the Edge (Race to the Edge takes place three years after Defenders of Berk). Throughout all of Riders and Defenders, he was thought to be a merchant who was likable, clumsy, easily frightened, and overly dramatic who was always babbling stories about his "travels". Everyone on Berk (except Snotlout) adored him and anticipated his visits very much. However, at the end of season 5, episode 13, Sins of the Past, of Race to the Edge, he was revealed to be an extremely intelligent, greedy, ruthless, sadistic, and psychopathic villain who had been after the "King of Dragons" the entire time. In season six, episode one, In Plain Sight, he said to Hiccup "Since as far back as Breakneck Bog, I've been doing everything humanly possible to rid the archipelago of you and your Dragon Riders." And a minute or two later he states that "The tales I sold you and your gullible father I plundered from real merchants before I sunk them and their ships." It's a meme in the Dragons fandom of calling him Traitor Johann instead of Trader Johann.

Regarding when Voldemort possessed Quirrel, another clue in the book happens in “The Sorting Hat” when Harry observes Quirrel “looking very peculiar in a large purple turban”, suggesting that he wasn’t wearing the turban in the Leaky Cauldron. The movie just messes with us by introducing Quirrel already wearing the turban.

I think its the scar that gives him the echoed memory of his mom dying, since the curse that gave the scare was the same curse that killed his mom and is also the mark that made harry a horcrux and gave him the ability to speak parseltoung. I'd like to point out that Quirrell was successful breaking into Gringotts. His failure came not from ineptitude, but rather simply a case of bad timing. If you recall the Prophet article said there was a break in but the vault in question had been emptied earlier that day. And Quirrell was not suspected of breaking in, I'd call that a successful infiltraition.

Yes yes yes precisely! I didn’t realize that Dumbledore had the mirror of Erised for so long. And being such a talented wizard, it makes sense that he figured out a way to put the stone in it eventually. He himself is even quite proud of it, so I assume to his knowledge, this is the first time something like that had been done. Yet you don’t hear about it in the papers. If Dumbledore had wanted a pat on the back, he would have publicized how he did it, but he never does. Only Harry and a small handful of others ever know he does it at all. Rowling commented on the thestral thing. Harry not discovering that he could see them at the end of book four was just an author's decision to not introduce a new mystery at the very end of the book, which would have distracted from the story that was told. But yes, he would have been able to see them then. I think Harry "witnessing" his mother's death as an infant is simply a case of him not yet being aware as a conscious being. None of us are really aware at that age, even if weird flashes of things come back to us later in life. Going back to the thestrals, I guess as fans and readers, we just have to decide if our suspension of disbelief can be stretched to include Harry not noticing them at the end of his fourth year.

Maybe Dumbledore apperated near the final chamber. I've always considered the Headmaster extempt from the Hogwarts apperation ban. Here's my headcanon: A split soul can only be made by cold-blooded murder, same for a Horcrux. That's why Harry destroying Quirrel doesn't count. I've always thought that Thestrals only appear once you have a deeper understanding of death, and that's why they only appeared for Harry after the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

No exception from the rule in the books. In the HBP movie, they disapparate from the tower or Dumbledore's office, but that's only because the movie wanted to skip the trip to Hogsmeade the book contains solely for that reason.

I think that maybe Hagrid let it slip to the centaurs about the stone in the same way he accidentally led the trio to that knowledge. Also, I think that Harry's memory of his parents' deaths is actually Voldemort's memory. The expanding scene of it is always told from Voldemort's perspective, not baby Harry's.

It's not as though he'd be able to make any headway without Harry and it might also explain why Quirrell/Voldemort doesn't outright kill Fluffy: he wants time to scout the obstacles without people catching onto what he's doing. There is a significant portion of time between when he learns the secret to Fluffy and when the showdown happens, and it feels a bit too convenient/coincidental that the trio just so happen to choose the right night. Yeah, Dumbledore is there, but Halloween shows us that he's not afraid to attempt the trials right under Dumbledore's nose...

I'm in the middle of your video, and I want to comment on the idea of Harry going over to the dark side: In the Star Wars story, the Force is, well, a force, and the Dark Side of the Force is something to which you can open yourself if you get too angry or too careless. In the Harry Potter stories, Voldemort is a person, not a force. He recruits, he threatens, he punishes. Dark magic exists, but I think that you can use dark magic, but it doesn't use you. You can get used to dark magic and give into its appeal, but it cannot take you over. In the "Star Wars" sense, Harry does drift over to the dark side a few times, or at least to its brink. He is constantly very angry (for good reason) in Order of the Phoenix, and he casts his first Unforgivable Curse at Bellatrix Lestrange near the end of that story. In Half-Blood Prince, learning what Sectumsempra does after using it against Draco, Harry tries to use it against the Inferi and later against Snape. Finally, in Deathly Hallows, Harry uses the Imperius Curse against a Gringotts goblin in moments of desperation, and later uses the Cruciatus Curse against Amycus Carrow. Harry never uses the Killing Curse, unless you count the times it rebounds off him. So although Harry never chooses to join the Death Eaters or join Voldemort, he resorts to using dark magic or Unforgivable Curses when he's enraged or desperate. In Star Wars, actions like that would've driven Luke Skywalker over to the Dark Side. This brings up how each story has different ideas about purity. Dumbledore declares that Harry has a pure heart, perhaps even after Harry has resorted, at times, to dark magic, including Unforgivable Curses. Perhaps in the Wizarding World, or at least with Dumbledore, purity has to do with one's ability to love and to sacrifice oneself for others. In Star Wars, with the Force, purity may have to do with controlling or even excising emotions, particularly anger, and that giving into anger, or giving into anger too often, destroys one's purity.

Gooooood stuff guys. You guys always say something to the effect of not fully understanding quidditch. I believe it is a very subtle foreshadowing for the first book and all 7. The balls are basic story telling the quaffle is the red herring, the bludgers are the villains the bullies and the obstacles, the golden snitch is the macguffin and the thing that is hiding in plain sight. The beaters are the bullies and the villains, the chasers are the adventure seekers and the people helping the hero's, the keeper is a good internationed hero that thinks he is doing the right thing and the seekers is the over all hero that is seeking for the truth and justice that is hiding in plane sight. This has always been my interpretation/justification for quidditch.

I think Harry probably was able to see the thestrals at the end of book 4, but was so distracted by his grieving and depression that he wasn't busy looking at the front of the carriages. I imagine that there were other details, but or small, which had changed but he didn't notice because of being so absorbed in his thoughts

I think it's funny how you guys assume that Dumbledore was having to do the tasks too. I always assumed that he had a secret way in that no one else ever knew about. That's why he was able to get to Harry so quickly.

Had a thought while listening to this episode. Fluffy was connected to Hagrid. The flying keys was for Harry, the chess board for Ron, and the potions logic for Hermione. What about the Devil's Snare? Was it part of Dumbledore's plan for Neville to go with them through the trap door?
