Chapter 3: New Wheels for the Xterra

After a few years of plastic-dipped wheels (which were impossible to clean) on the X, I finally bought new rims. A lot of Xterra guys are running Pro Comp 7089's but I've never seen one in person...until now. I very happy with the results.

Sorry, just now seeing this. I used the standard Pro-4X tire size. 265/75/16 and the melt mod.

Perfected Auto quick question. Was the melt mod necessary for the stock size tires? I’ve heard people doing it for the 33’s

@@kolbietafoya1672 Sorry to just now see this. The melt mod was necessary for stock size tires. Even though they are the same size as the ones that come on the Pro-4x, the tread is much more aggressive on the BFG KO2’s and they just barely catch the plastic on turns. I also have a half inch spacer lift up front. BTW-the melt mod is super easy so don’t let that stop you.

I have 1/2" spacers up front that I installed to level out the truck. Not sure if that matters or not. The big thing is the melt mod. That's something that will definitely need to be done.

Hi sir. Just got the same wheels yesterday. The only difference is went with the 17's 7089-7868. Just wanna ask, did you use the stock lugnuts? Or you used an aftetmarket spline lugnuts? Thanks.

I read that some people were using the stock lugs on these rims so before I left to go to Discount, I found a socket that fit the stock lug nuts and was still able to fit in the hole in the rim and brought it with me. It's a good thing I did. I was going to go with the spline lug nuts because they had black ones. For some reason, none of the ones Discount had fit correctly. I am positive they were using the correct size but they were slightly loose on the threads and one actually screwed up the stud threads, (which they had to fix). So, I told them I know that the stock ones fit and that I brought a socket with me that they could use, which they did. BTW-It's just a deep craftsman socket but I have a huskey one that fits also which I now keep in the truck with a breaker bar. They are perfectly balanced so there weren't any issues using the stock lugs. Which did you go with?

@@PerfectedAuto thank you for the response sir. I havent installed it yet, im planning to do it this saturday. Im planning to use the stock lugnuts since i dont have the spline lugnuts. Do you mind if you give me a link where i can buy that socket or the name of the socket? Can i buy it on any auto parts store? Thank you.

Hey man, I installed the same wheels but I’m getting a lot of vibration in the steering wheel at high speed, even after having the wheels balanced three times. Did you have any similar issues?

You might need to get hub rings . Especially if you have after market wheels . I had the same issue on my Tacoma and just those plastics rings helped.

you may also need control arms. once I changed wheels on my car and for whatever reason it “exposed” the fact my control arms were shot. after changing them it was way better

What's a melt mod?

Sorry for the late response. Melt mod is taking a heat gun to the plastic liner inside the fender and heating up the section behind the tire where the tire would rub. Basically, you heat it, push it with a hammer or something, hold it for a few minutes and it will then retain that new shape and the tire wont rub.
