HARDER THAN WE THOUGHT... First Impressions of Van Life Tasmania

Күн бұрын

Tasmania is absolutely stunning, but we are quickly realising it might not be as easy as we expected it to be for van life in our little Toyota Hiace. [Remember to protect yourself with Nord VPN: www.nordvpn.com... and use our link for 4 months free with 2 Year Plan] We are not self contained (apparently a pee bottle doesn't count as a toilet) which is a parameter for a lot of free camps. As we were here in the height of summer a lot of campsites with facilities are all booked up. Combine that with some rough weather and no LPG fuel stations things are a little tougher than expected.

⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute, we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But then we were back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire!! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and made our way to Japan. We enjoyed a three-month Japanese Adventure and then got back to Martha for some new European Adventures. After an incredible three-month Scottish road trip, we packed up our van and headed to Australia for a new van life adventure! Here we bought and built our new van in only 30 days and then took him deep into the Australian outback and beyond!

Hiya kiddos!! Happy St Patrick’s Day ☘️!! Tasmania is so lush and beautiful! Those ferns were massive! It kinda sucks no LPG and no cool park ups yet. Hopefully that all changes. Those falls were sooo beautiful! I was thinking Philly might get a crazy idea and want to climb them. Glad he didn’t 😂!! What kind of towns are in Tasmania? Loved your video 😁It’s still tourist season down here so they get stricter because everyone wants to free camp. West coast is wild & wet most of the time. Unfortunately people leaving human faeces and toilet paper everywhere meant a lot of places became self contained only. Hope you enjoy the rest of your time down here.

Happy St Patrick's Day! Watching your vid over some lovely colcannon, roasted veg, a wee tipple of Jameson, and (by your suggestion back in the UK) mushy peas. Full disclosure, we're not able to get marrowfat peas in the US without extortive prices so we used Vatana peas, but they're pretty good! We're planning a trip to the UK in late September and are looking forward to the real thing. 😋🤤 Tassie weather looks more than a little like Seattle! 🌧️🌧️ Nice of them to make you feel at home i suppose? 😁 That chili at the end looked very tasty! Do you know why Irish chili can only have 239 beans in it? 'Cuz one more bean would be too farty (auditory joke). ❤️❤️✌️😎xx

Montezuma Falls was a favourite of mine in the mid 90's when my sister was teaching on the west coast. The NE Dundas tramway serviced the Hercules mine and carted ore to Zeehan for processing. When I was last there the wire rope bridge wasn't a thing, the other side is a popular 4x4 track.

Tasmania has free camping along the East Coast. I stayed at two free campsites at Swansea, one is quite popular and a bit crowded but the one directly opposite Freycinet is a beauty and the fishing is fantastic in the river mouth. I also free camped at Bluestone bay, bit of a bush track to get down there but it's a great spot overlooking a bay, whales and never ending flocks of migratory birds. There is a dirt track out of Richmond with a turning circle between two paddocks where you can pick oysters out of the tidal river. Just ask at the supermarket, they'll know which one, ha ha. I camped there for a while too, although I was pushing my luck. I packed up my tent every morning and had no problems. A neighbour brought me a beer at Christmas time.

Y'know you guys cld bcm the voice for Tassie - you stage sm great clips showing it how beautiful it is there. It's like the Alaska of Straya - everyone's told how beautiful it is but you hv t go out on a limb t see it for themselves. I'm thinking of returning there after going there W my mother a few yrs ago, didn't get t see enough. That's the thing any the place, so much t see/do that you hv t allocate a lot of time t do so.... Your clips show ppl how nice it is & where ppl wld like t go. I'm hooked - b following closely for ideas. Yre a v positive pair...don't let anything get in yr way!!

When I drove (car) in Taz the rain was relentless I was proud of driving to port Arthur on a bridge road when I could barely see the end of my nose from the rain/spray. I also found a high concerntration of name places from where I live in the UK, Chiswick, Richmond it was surreal

Yeah crazy!! I kept saying to Philly why does Australia have no original names, it's all just named after UK towns haha. But I suppose we colonised it 🤣

Well I like the hiking better than the rock climbing . Personally here in the USA 🇺🇸 I prefer to walk on the rocks . That’s the best waterfall you’ve shown me so far . I wouldn’t have went anywhere else after seeing that the first station was closed . It would have been straight to some fuel .
@phillyandkeely

No LPG fuel until the other side of the country 🤣 so might aswell enjoy the scenery along the way haha, running on petrol ain't all bad, just doesn't run as smooth as it does on LPG.

I'd tried to blank those Tasmanians rope bridges out of my memory! I was there with my teenage boys who thought it was hilarious to wobble the bridge while I tried to make it across. They also love the "Im Philly, pleased to meet you" joke, I must have heard it over a thousand times. Tasmania is beautiful, it needs the rain to be so green and lush, enjoy.

Oh my god, we are tough in Tasmania because everything is more extreme down here and the weather can be unpredictable, but it's normal for us. This island is heavily regulated in terms of camping, it never used to be like this. Gas for your van, eek. Let's hope Tassie doesn't break you. Hope your trip gets better, and Keely, that you feel better, because those tracks are hard work. One last thought: can you imagine life for transported convicts (really were slaves) in Tasmania - it was hard to survive on the run. Take care and stay safe. Looking forward to more spectacular Tassie scenery.

Enjoyed your passionate experiences & personalities P&K - avocado as well on mine pls - you probably discovered that the Wild West of TAS rains 400 days a year and even wetter than far nth QLD - the NW coast has recently been recorded as having the purest air in the world (surprisingly Antartica and Arctic poles release methane) - I’ve been trekking the apple isle from the mainland for over 30 years now and mainly Feb/Mar for the best weather and avoid school and public holidays - I’ve done it by small SUV with the last five being a bicycle on my own - hopefully you got to Liffey Falls/Mole Creek/Deloraine in the mid nth and Bruny Island/Huon Valley in the sth - now that we’re past Covid I can plan my solo Ireland/Canada bicycle trek in 2025 - happy travels 🚴‍♀️

Not knowing where you're going or what you're doing is all part of the adventure. Hopefully you find your feet in Tassie soon. We do have many places that look like you can camp but they're actually car parking areas so overnight camping not allowed. If you can camp somewhere it will generally have a sign that says "overnight stop" for example or "RV friendly"
