I love the original Dune books. Frank Herbert told stories about the nature of humanity and our effects on the environment. I have read a lot of the books that were written after Frank's death. Those stories are ok. They do not have a lot of depth IMO. Also, I don't know if Brian Herbert and Anderson had read Chapterhouse before they started writing their sequel books. They clearly didn't understand what Marty and Daniel were. Frank clearly states that they were super advanced Face Dancers.

This M & D debate will rage for a long time yet. I kind of agree, but with Frank's tendency to give the plot a twist atop a subversion I can't rule out anything. Your comment about the theme of environment in Frank's Duniverse and other writings is deep. Prompted me to ask if you're familiar with Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station? Check out the channel. His Dune series his his PHD writings. As a SciFi lover after watching some of those vids you reading list will grow.

I find it so hard to believe that some people prefer the first 3 books of Dune...I rather read the last 3 , God Emperor, Heretics and Chapterhouse. Those books for me are an amazing scifi achievement. About Brian books, I also love them...have read the prequels, and the end of the saga. Must admit, didn't agree in the end the series had. But for me it's was ok to have some kind of closure. ... don't get why people hated the prequels, there are some amazing characters there. Omnius, Erasmus, Serena Butler, Vorian Atreided, Xavier Harkonnen, the Titans ... there's so much new lore added to the Dune universe that it baffles me the hate the prequels get.🤦🏼♂️

One of the things I find strange is people's various pronunciations of the names. I read the name as "Honored MAY-TRUH". Maybe it's being from Canada and having the French Canadian influence on some words (I'm not French Canadian myself)...or, I would pronounce it Darwi OH-DRAW-DAY because I based it on how Atreides was pronounced. I don't know what is right or wrong, I just find it interesting.

Heretics and Chapterhouse felt like an afterthought for me. The best part about both is the fleeting exploration of living in a post-Tyrant world, but this is sadly in short bursts. I definitely think the Bene Gesserit are more interesting as just one of many factions fighting for dominance. Having two books where they're the predominant focus makes them terribly boring, especially when Herbert's food/restaurant fetish enters overdrive. The strangest thing about Chapterhouse is that the Bene Gesserit homeworld is frequently referred to as secretive and privy only to the Witches, but Herbert never utilizes its full potential -- all-out war on Chapterhouse after the Honoured Matres find their homeworld. The writing side of my brain was very surprised that there was no planting and pay-off with that. For me at least, God Emperor was the final great Dune book. Great video, man!

I started reading (ok, listening to the audiobooks) Dune also at the beginning of 2020 and just finished Chapterhouse today, it's nice to listen to someone else's thoughts on this book and series. It's also encouraging to see someone reach the same conclusions I had about the characters at the end. I hadn't read much about the series on the internet to avoid spoilers so I had no idea the book would end the way it did, but I appreciated that it seemed like Duncan and his crew were in a new universe all on their own. Don't think I'll get into Brian Herbert's books just yet. Looking forward to the new movie as well!

While I find much of the Brian Books off putting (such as changing Paul's birthplace to Kaitain), I do suggest you at least give Hunters and Sandworms a go. Much of which was written from Frank's Dune 7 notes, as well as other conversation Brian had with Frank over the years. While it's obvious it's not written by Frank, it does bring the story to an end. There are moments where I go 'That twist is all Frank' or some passages so well written I often think they were so detailed in Frank's notes that Brian or Kevin lifted it. Bonus: Read by Scott Brick. Time warning. While it picks up almost immediately from Chapterhouse it does take place over several decades. The disconnected with the characters is understandable. But, the long held connection with the Duncans which most all readers have is rewarded. Plus, if you listen casually and you find it not to your liking 🙅you're not out book $$

I just listened to all the audio books in the series written by Frank, took me about three months. Chapterhouse was the one I was most looking forward to but ended up being my least favorite. It was almost hard to get through sometimes. The ending came out of nowhere for me & left me audibly questioning “wait, it’s over?!?!? Is that it?!?!” The series really started out with an unmatched BANG and went out so oddly, in my opinion…. Not saying it was bad, just didn’t resonate with it the way I did with the first four.

I understand your reluctance to tackle the 'sequels.' Honestly, they are a mixed bag. Some great parts mixed with some heavy contrivances. The sequels tie into the Machine Jihad much more than the parent Dune series. That prequel series is a hard read, needlessly pedantic and very derivative (not in a good way). I'm not sure I even finished the last book in that series.

He was going for the same fantastical orientalism he was going for in all the other books. I mean... he was really into that. He was an ex-Catholic so I'm inclined to reference the Catholic church's attitude on the Jewish people as apocalyptic pawns.
