Sounds like after a few mods this would be as perfect an offset as you can get. I’ve been wanting to delve into this type of smoker but like you said it’s a bit more complicated than the pellet smokers. I’m just about that lazy too. 😂 Great video on what to watch out for on this particular Char Griller unit. 🫶👊🏼🍺

I probably won't do any mods? Unless something breaks on it??? It just takes more dedication than other kinds of smokers. The smaller, the harder it is to do.

Great review! I'm looking at buying an offset around this size later in the year, but our options are a bit limited here in the UK- this one would run around $1075 if I bought it today, which is a bit rich for me at the moment. I still swear by my Weber kettle but fancy something different- might go with a little pellet smoker if it's going to be more economical. Thanks for the video!

I have a Weber Kettle,...it is good, actually made a pizza on it as well as a 24lb turkey! All went great. (Not to mention dozens of other things)

Looks like a much better and more modern version of what we have. One leg has rusted and is shorter than the other and it’s super dirty and a bit rickety, but it served us very well for many many years. Think our chimney is on the top at the back. Hmmm. Now not remembering for sure. I guarantee ours isn’t air tight. It’s blatantly obvious when the smoke pours out from under the lid and everywhere else 😂. Yeah I still use a thermometer and it’s not even digital lol.

With these scaled down offset smokers, thermometers are a must with the fluctuation of temps from opening the firebox, adding wood, condition of the wood, that kind of stuff. Digital? Doesn't make the food taste any better, so that is just ok! Thank You HPC!

Awesome points Paulie. I had one years ago and yes my wheel fell off and I had to re- paint many times with high heat paint. But like you said all in all it's a very good offset smoker.

I will never need to repaint. I constantly spray cooking oil on the outside that makes a great protective/seasoned layer on the outside. Owner's manual warns that if too hot, it will crack the paint and rust. I will only use this as a smoker and never as a BBQ grill even though it is capable of being used as one.

It is for the true enthusiast for sure, and enjoyable to use. For the fire off and forget backyard BBQer's,...they shouldn't waste their time getting one. I think it rocks! Thanks WhitePines!

Those are legitimate concerns, but not deal breakers. I love my Grand Champ, and it's my go to when the weather is nice. When the weather is NOT so nice, I go to my Pit Boss 1150PS. I honestly wish they would've put some front wheels on it, to make it easier to move around. Again, not a deal breaker. The Workhorse has them, and the Pit Boss has them. It should be a no-brainer. I extended my smokestack for better convection, as suggested by Aaron Franklin, and it honestly made a difference. I was able to get more consistent temps throughout the cook chamber. Of course, you'll have to make some tweaks to any smoker in order to achieve your goal, but the Grand Champ is a solid smoker, for sure!

That is what I am saying, not a deal breaker by any means. I have a Pit Boss, and the OKJOE'S Bronco, but the Grand Champ is also my favorite. I kept the plate and don't see any need for any mods from how it has worked for me. This video is pretty much telling folks of what isn't perfect with it. Thank You my Grand Champ Brother!

Enjoyed your video. I just got the grand champ a few months ago, & Im having trouble getting my temps even across the cook chamber. Any suggestions on how to solve this?

You mean evenly distributed? Not sure where you live, but it is still winter and if you are in a cold state, ...that doesn't help. Wind make is miserable to run any smoker. All smokers have varied temps inside. Don't worry, just learn the sweet spots for now, and once summer heats up, it should be much better. You are the first to know this, but I am working professionally selling smoked ribs, pulled pork as well as other items. Keep in touch!

Is the only difference between the xd and the cheaper unit the upper grate ?!

I think the Grand Champ is larger including the firebox. Location of exhaust may be different? Not good when on top of smoking chamber. Thank You!
