Character Spotlight: William Parry, part 1

Hi friends! This week we dive into the world of His Dark Materials, and look at Will Parry!
Will Parry is the young boy from our world. Interestingly enough, though he appears in the first season of the show, Will isn't a character in the first book at all. The show takes from scenes we see, and scenes that are recounted, in Subtle Knife, the second book of the series.

There are some occassions where giving a specific role to a person of a colour is bad decision. Not because of colour or racism, but because of the world structure (I'm looking at you, Witcher with black elves 👀). HDM is not one of these. Though I imagined Will as a white person while I was reading the books, because I rarely see people other than white, his character in the show is totally ok for me. I think the actor is really talented and I (spoiler?) loved the dynamic between him and Lyra in S02E01, even though I had a hard time getting used to Lyra's character after the movie version. All in all, I think he was a good decision, not because of the diversity of the crew (I don't care about skintones if the lore allows them), but because I can see book Will in his acting, and this is what matters.

@@EmiCooper1003 It didn't get too much hype sadly. I only knew it because me and my friend really waited for it and searched the release date on Google. But I hardly saw any articles about it, unlike some much more hyped series like the Witcher or GoT

I really think it's brilliant to cast a black character to portray William Parry. It really is one of those occurence which shows how much we have changed in our society considering racism. I think it's amazing. They did the same thing about Lord Boreal/Sir Charles, and I think it's wonderful. I really am happy about this. Besides, Amir Wilson is gorgeous. Tee hee.

As an avid fan of the books since Amber Spyglass was released my senior year of high school (yes, I dated myself an am proud of it), I love Will being cast as a biracial teenager. The only image of Will I had to go on before this was the illustration of him on the dust jacket of the hardcover first printing of The Subtle Knife. Which showed Will as Caucasian. But I feel this casting may be more realistic. At least in my limited understanding that the UK is a multitude of races, and having his character be biracial be less of trying to shoe horn in a person of color into the series, and more of being a product of the setting the story takes place in. Amir said once in an interview that Phillip Pullman (the author of the book series)wrote him a letter talking about how pleased he was that he was playing Will Parry. I was so happy with this mini series, not only because it stuck very well to the source material , but it also didn't whitewash the characters like the movie did with Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards, and Nichols Kidman (and don't even get me started on how her version of Mrs.Counter was able to b**ch slap her daemon without any repercussions to herself physically). Long story, Will was wonderfully cast

Okay, have you watched it? if not, I guess you could consider the next part spoilers (I wouldn’t, partly because it’s not a plot point, partly because I’m very difficult to understand when I’m excited about a fandom) *OH MY GOSH THE INTRODUCTION!! THE WAY PAN LOOKS BACK RIGHT BEFORE THE CAMERA ZOOMS BACKWARDS IS SO COOL!! IT’S LIKE LYRA’S SOUL IS LOOKING BACK INTO THE DIVISION BTWEEN WORLDS!! AND THE TORRE DEGLI ANGELI AND THE CAVE!! AND THE ANGELS ON THE KNIFE HILT!!* oh and the show itself is really great too but if I listed everything good about it I’d be here a while.
